Title: Troll how to make them playble
Post by: lilith on October 10, 2009, 07:53:59 PM
In my opinoin troll are a little too exepnesive for the big malus they have (-1 command when want to activate them) , they bonus regeneration isn' t so impressive ( i think , maybe someone can make me change idea) so they cost 110 , like boar boyz. What to do with them? 70 each is a good solution? too low? increase theyr stat? improve the regeneration rules?

70 is definately to low, I mean that would be as much as a unit of flaggelants, who have no save.

ok then in your opinion how much point is a malus the command rules, how point is regeneration ? -20/-30 for the stupidity (this is the rules in whfb) +5/+10 for regeneration? with the stat alone  maybe is worth 90/100 ?

Trolls work fully as intended. manage them into a defended position and they are neigh unbeatable!

Also remember that trolls come into their own when they start working on initiative !

uhm interesting thing , but you thing they are priced correctly? i mean you think they are  a competitive choose in respect of  an ogre unit or a boar boyz?

depends on terrain and scenario !

in a tournament force, not knowing exact terrain/scenario limitations I would ALWAYS pick up at least one unit of trolls for the potential damage/absorbtion

get a feel for them, and remember that you dont order on initiative ..... anything that comes NEAR the trolls will be in for a nasty supprise

so you mean the better use is to put them in the back near your first line of infantry  to countercharge?

that depends on terrain and scenario conditions ... but yeah, using them that way is a viable option... personaly I would move them forward, preferably into a defended postion where they will "interdict" your opponents movement.

1) I think orcish Trolls are much harder to use than Chaos ones (of course).
2) In Chaos I very much like them if I'm playing against fortified or defended troops. I build a brigade out of 3 Trolls and reserve the General's command for them. Did work quite well until now (but try to avoid woods or similar with them if you want to move on. They tend to stick in there).
I remember two games where I quite easily took a fortified watchtower with them.

But to be honest in 2k standard games I for myself do not use them too often. On the other hand I would be very careful if I am playing against such a troll-brigade.

And having in mind their stats they are already cheaper than they should be. If you ever get them in combat you can be quite sure that you made a good deal.
