Title: Mordheim Quest 1: Orc Ambush - Battle Report
Post by: Maniacus on October 11, 2009, 07:15:12 AM
A while back my gaming group (including Specialist Games forum member M4Jumbo) wanted to recapture the feel of our old Dungeons & Dragons role playing days and bring that into our miniatures gaming.  So we came up with what we call "Mordheim Quest".

Each person runs from 2-4 characters chosen from the various warband lists and together these make up the adventuring party.  They play as a group through a campaign of ongoing linked scenarios in which the game master sets up the scenario and controls the enemies and NPCs.  Experience, loot, skills, and purchasing equipment is done in the same way as Mordheim.  This has been a lot of fun and I wanted to share some of our ongoing adventures.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Scenario 1:  Orc Ambush

Below is the first battle the adventuring party fought.  The group was traveling through the countryside so that one of their members, the warrior priest Erasmus Voltoc, could deliver a holy relic to the Sigmarite temple in a nearby town.  During their journey they ran into an ambush set by orc raiders at a river crossing.

An overview of the countryside.

The party approaches the river crossing and sees Orc warriors blocking the foot bridge. "Unlucky Eddie" the marauder attempts to leap to the other side but fails his jump, falls in, and is swept downstream.

Gabby the Amazon leaps across the stream to attack the orcs from behind.

Hagar the Merciless, the Norse Berserker, and Grungi Headsplitter the Dwarf Slayer charge across the bridge to launch their assault on the orc warriors.

The rest of the party spreads out to attack the group of goblin archers harassing them from the flank.  The Dwarf Engineer, Elf Ranger, and Wizard provide missile support from a distance.  Meanwhile, Unlucky Eddie still hasn't regained his footing and continues to be swept further downstream.

After slaying the goblins, Maximus the pit fighter and Rupert von Hasselhoff attempt to cross the river downstream from the bridge.

The remaining orcs attempt to flee the area with their ill-gotten loot while the party makes a last attempt to stop them with some long range missile fire.

After chasing off the last of the orc raiders the adventurers secure the battlefield before continuing on their journey.

This is great! I ran something like this last Spring and Summer. Keep up the good work.

Likewise, I put up the 'Mordheim Legends' thread, which has each player controlling 1 hero and two henchmen.  Of course, unlike yours, I haven't tested it out.

I did see your "Mordheim Legends" thread.  What we're doing is very much like you outlined.  It's working out very well and we're having a lot of fun with it.

In addition to standard Mordheim rules we've also experimented with mixing in a few things from other GW games such as Overwatch (Necromunda) as well as Might and Fate (GW's LOTR).  Also, to capture the feel of a cleric's (warrior priest) healing abilities, if the party's priest doesn't go out of action we allow him to heal one character in the post game sequence.   This healing allows that character to reroll the results of their post-game serious injury roll, but they must accept the second result even if it's worse.

Absolutely. And while it might imbalance in the normal Mord setting, but for these purposes, I think a successful healing spell cast during the game should also grant +1 Exp (limit 1 per spell, no matter how many are healed, limit to about 3 per game.)

It makes sense that a a healer should advance as quickly as a Pestilence casting sorceror.

There was one published on the Yahoo Mordheim forum that I tried out last year and it was pretty good. I adapted or change a few things but overall is how I would do it.

This is really a great idea!
I like what I'm seeing.

How many players are you?

We have been playing our "Mordheim Quest" scenarios with 3 to 4 players plus the GM.  Each player has up to 4 characters total and, depending on the scenario, they usually run from 2 to 4 of them in any particular game.
