Hi there.
I wanted to start a thread where people could put their opinions about miniatures from different manufacturers available for WM. I will start with my orcs.
Pendraken- quite cheap and good quality, got lots of ork infantry which looks really nice and has lots of different poses. Unfortunately they dont add bases as models are not in blisters but ordered in packs of 10. I also got wolf riders from there - wolfs are bit bigger than GW and guys sitting on them are bigger as well, bit more like orcs but still makes nice unit of Wolf Riders, also perfectly able to use them as hobgoblins for dogs of war or chaos dwarf armies. Chariots from pendraken are massive, much bigger than GW ones but only with one archer on them, also looking bit more like orc but that shouldnt matter that much. They are also much simpler contruction, no spikes on the sides etc.
Kallistra- I got orc rock lobbers (proper bargain, 3 lobbers in one 5 pound blister!), nice looking as well, got some trolls (12 of them in a blister, very nice looking, 3 different poses, one of them could easily go as an ogre as well) and command group which is simply amazing! 5 pounds for blister, 30 models inside, 3 orc shamans, few guys with banners and drums, some riders, two MASSIVE orcs (size of an ogre) that could be a a general, some other models easily could work as heroes. All wolf riders are massive though, so could either work as captains for infantry units (thats how I m gonna use them) or characters, I wouldnt put them as normal wolf riders as they are size of boar boys. :)

hy could you make some photos of this stuff especially pendraken , because i can' t really see if i like the model or not. I want to buy some orc warrior and goblin from them but can't see any picture at their site
-
Eureka Miniatures do a nice range of elves, dwarves and chaos dwarves.
I also like their beastmen.
Their size is also in keeping with the GW range so they fit right in.
I found this to be an issue with both pendraken and kallistra on some of their ranges, but it does depend on the model in question in my experience.
-
will try to take some pics and post them soon.
As for pendraken models- they are definitely well in same scale as GW models, same with most of kallistra stuff. I dont know about pendraken goblins though, perhaps I will order some models soon and see for myself, after all they are well cheap so im not risking much.
some pendraken orc models here: http://www.pendraken.co.uk/sub%20page/orcs.htm As I said they fit GW scale perfectly.

I have pendraken goblins, they are as tall as pendraken orcs but has more "human" complexion. Here are a small diorama of fighting each other some pendraken goblins.

For me pendraken goblin makes also perfect orcs. If you need pic comparison just ask for them
-
thats the thing- I need them to look more "gobliny". Any other manufacturers that do goblin models?
-
I disagree, the kallistra skeleton warriors tower over their GW counterparts.
-
I think pendraken goblins are the actual kallistra orcs.
yep pendraken goblins are not too "goblinish"

Irregular have in it catalogue some goblins, but I never seen them (neither photo or in my hand)
http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/
I haven't any figure from irregular, and it does not seem to much detail to me, but, it has something I like when I see the pics. Maybe the poses, or don't know what... but I have a good feeling about irregular.
-
eastern barbarian or everyone, if you are looking for a particular figure, ask for it and maybe someone could upload a pic of them. (just a thought)
-
Copplestone Castings 10mm fantasy. Some of the best 10mm models, and he has great pictures on his site of every piece.
There are some comparison pictures of 10mm Eureka, BoFA and Copplestone on my blog (http://underthemountain.wordpress.com/). Choose "10mm fantasy" from the "Categories" menu on the right.

Obelisk miniatures had a range of "conquistadores" and meso-american indians very interesting... I don't have figures, but as proxis conquistadores could make excellent Dogs of Wars or Empire units. And being much more spin off of games workshop world, the indian: Aztecs, caribean and so one, could be excellent units subjected or conscripts for the Lizardmen Army. Or even an ally unit of Dogs of Wars/empire in the jungles.

The Obelisk miniatures look fantastic. I'd get them if I was building an empire army. Absolutely.
-
Ooh, those are nice aren't they? I'm not really one for using non-GW figures though, especially for stuff that GW does actually produce. And for those, well that's why I've got a huge range of sculpting tools and some 10mm dollies that Rick gave me back when I was doing work on Project Norse. And of course chances are that I'll never do any more than two WMF armies anyway...
Now for WMH, that's WMA, WMM and any other variants that come out, well that's a completely different story now isn't it? MY EIR army is evidence enough of this I think...
As to why just GW. Well it's quite simple, if I want more figures for my Empire army then I want Empire figures, not historical renaisance figures. Oddly enough I have used my Empire Halberdiers as proxy figs in my Roman army from time-to-time... Oh and of course I have got literally bags of unpainted WM Empire metal, never mind unpainted WH Empire metal and plastic, probably a metric tonne of unpainted stuf across all the systems I've bought figures for, and not all of those are GW games. Once upon a time I dabbled in a game called 'Warzone', but that was only because I played Mutant Chronicles and my friends that I played with had been turned off GW by the many price hikes of the late 90's, oh and beer, music and women of course...
-
up to yo uStomm- I personally think non GW miniatures give game some more flavour and make armies look more interesting. Saying that so far I was unable to find good replacement for GW gobbos but orc range of different manufacturers is quite impressive i have to say.
-
Coppelstone orcs are really nice too. Also have a range of half-orcs.
There are picture of both of them in the paint and modelling galleies
-
I should also point out that the more money spent on GW alternatives instead of the genuine article, the more likely a whole range is to get dropped due to poor sales. At least you would think so anyway...
-
they are dropping it anyway- I see no point in supporting GW after what they have done with specialist games.
-

Well if they had released the beastmen that were allegedly sculpted I would have bought GW and bought a 4k army off of them.
But they didn't, same goes for a lot of the alt/trial armies I own.
Then they stopped production of the metal models from BOTFA that a lot of people used for these alt armies.
This argument has raged for years about supporting SG but GW don't do a lot to help out, do they?
Even the online article repository diasappeared :(
There was mention a while ago about alt/rare stuff being released on a pre-order based model but that never came about.
I would love to buy a new army and if the rumour is true I will be shelving out on a bret and araby one sooner than I had planned :(
But when I got into the game kislev was discontinued, I kicked myself for not buying a 2k force, got to say only ever played kislev once and I know I am not missing out on yet another human army.
As for the 'rumour' about SG getting shelved, I have heard that before and then they released the Araby army ;)
Until it is officially announced I will take all rumours with a pinch of salt.
-
I have heard that kallistra are taller than 10mm. Also I have heard from Azrael that kallistra towered GW.
I have found a pic from a blog and I attach to you, because if all kalistra range are like this I will drop it from my list of manufactureres.
Does anybody knows if all the figures from kallistra has the same proportions?
I could imagine that kallistra use the pendraken figures (based in strips) and the new figures/range are the taller ones. Am I right? or all kallistra figures are nearly 13-16 mm?
The first pic is kallistra / pendraken historical
The second pic (from left to right) --> pendraken fantasy/ kallistra / pendraken historical / 15mm alternative games
The pics are not mine so I put the source (give to Caesar what is from Caesar) http://aportodos.mforos.com/1354550/7782193-10mm-pendraken-vs-kallistra/

Is a lot of Kalistra not officialy tagged as 15 mil ??

Is a lot of Kalistra not officialy tagged as 15 mil ??
I don't know, in his official site it is very clear that are 10mm. I have search through forums/pages and I could not get any clear idea... I see pics that are 10-12mm clearly (fantasy) but others 13-15mm, but well all the measures are made with my eyes and in pics... so be carefull with that information. I attach another pic from a fantastic blog
http://pokeofpike.wordpress.com/2008/08/06/but-my-lord-we-shall-need-a-great-many-wee-little-men/
If someone have first hand information, about which sets are bigger than other will be high appreciate
-
scale creep is a way of life. Kallistra calls them "big 10/12mm" miniatures.
Of course GW's '10mm' miniatures are fairly chunky as well -- as I found out when I got a bunch of Pendraken polish winged lancers.
(Now why would I be buying winged lancers?)
-

I could only find GFI orcs. I do not have them but could make good goblins for my taste. I give you a link of comparison:
http://15mmfantasy.tripod.com/gfi.html
-
i personally got kallistra rock lobbers, command group and some trolls. Trolls are about same size, command group orcs- some of them are bigger but then nothing better for a general than nasty, massive Orc character. Lots of those orcs from command group such as musicians, standard bearers etc were just right size, so i guess it depends on particular model.
-
GFI orcs and goblins look quite good, they could be a solution to my problems, with a difference is that I have to order them from US so I guess I will just keep hunting on eBay for more gobbos.
-
just got few more samples from Pendraken- their ratmen look very much like skaven but are size of other 10mm models so this is only problem- i am sure though many ppl will not mind that and of course bigger skaven make excellent stormvermin for those that do mind. They do have a guy looking like an assassin as well :)
Boar Riders- looks very big, more like 15 mm than 10 mm but I think they would look great as commanders of boar units- bigger ork, bigger boar= big boss :)
Their goblisn look exactly like orcs, good size for them as well, just simply less armoured, no helmets etc.
-
Also pendraken gyrocpter (I think gyrobomber?) has a dwarf pilot of 15mm, unacceptable for me. I will swap it and make a convertion of the pilot with other 1omm figure.
-
How about kislev cavlary proxies with this mongols?
http://www.tridentebologna.it/dettagli_E.php?id=TB4172
sorry I mean this for the kislevites archers (original blister not the tribe horsemen)
http://www.tridentebologna.it/dettagli_E.php?id=TB4175
I think they sculpted the horse as "steppe ponnies" so is why the horse is stange at first sight
-
I've got some new pics on my site (http://underthemountain.wordpress.com/) of Magister Militum Mongols, orcs, and ashigaru. I hope they prove useful for some of you.
I have an order from Kallistra (Mongols and Vikings) scheduled to arrive soon, and hope to upload more comparison pictures sometime next weekend.
-
that is and will be very useful, (at least for me)
by the way you have a great site yamenko

Hi,
Warmaster Acolytes is making a catalogue of 10mm figures, to enjoy figures of 10mm, think in conversions or uses for warmaster and to not buy blind products (buy only with reference). Maybe could be interesting.
http://warmaster-acolytes.mforos.com/1854818-catalogo-de-miniaturas/
Everyone could participate if is his wish

I'll have to check to see what I bought. I've used Pendraken figures for my daemon army, with a bit of figures from Khurasan miniatures.
I bought some stuff from GFI (I think -- a US based company) to use as pikemen in a DOW army. (I got tired of converting GW halberdiers.) I also want to find some 10mm Greek/Macedonian figures that have pikes. The GFI Orcs look great, but I don't have any.
I can post more about which figs I used for my Cthulu Daemon army -- see the Warmaster tale of Painters -- but I'm not home now so don't have all the info.
I bought a bunch of 10mm Pendraken stuff, and I am taking photos for Pendraken for their website. I wish they had more photos, so I am sending them pictures of what I ordered.
This is a great thread! I will have to check out the links later! This will be a BIG help!
-
That is alot of stuff, I have never seen GFI close pictures!

In our effort to make a catalogue of 10mm figures we post this link

Only problem is that forum all seems to be in Spanish. And of course the golden rule for native English speakers and the internets is, that unless it involves naked women or absolute necessity (like trying to find your hotel when abroad), we won't go near a foreign language website.
Actually the same is generally true of foreign languages full-stop, which really is quite a shame. I do fancy learning German properly at some point, and maybe having a go at Italian so that when I'm visiting my parents in Tuscany I don't always have to come across as the ignorant foreigner...
-
You are right Stom 8), but references are in english, except GW that are sold in Spain translated. But I do not think that a bunch of GW vetereans like you guys will find it very difficult. It could be interesting for you. If someone would like to participate uploading pics and do not speak english could contact with some moderator in the forum ( I know they are really nice people :P) and the needed post will be translated to english.
Anyway you have make an accurate overview of the situation of the net :)

Here you can see some of my painted figures from different brands for a comparison:

My approach has been to use GW minis, for the most part. If a unit is OOP or is otherwise unavailable, I'll go to other manufacturers. However, for my biggest armies, I'll slip in a few non-canon units either for variety or fluff value. For example, my HE force includes some Dark Elf Corsairs and Spearmen, painted to match the rest of my HE army.
I have four warmaster armies, and my next long-term goal is a Westerosi army (based on George RR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series) built around Empire/Bretonnian rules. For that, I'm sure to use a combination of GW and Copplestone, with maybe some Old Glory mixed in for good measure. Of course, Eureka's line is really good, too.
-
Wondering if anyone has any ideas for alternative minis for albion fenbeasts? I have searched many 6/10/15mm fantasy ranges but not found anything suitable.
Generally aiming for 15-25mm tall as he will be alone on the base, and fairly generic swampy/plantlike/creepercovered fenbeast/swamp lord/marsh walker kind of idea.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
-
@Nat are you doing an Albion army?
I do hope so.
The model is very similar to the very old plague elemental.
These may come up a little more regularly (and cheaper) on eBay.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITADEL-SLOTTA-BASE-LARGE-MONSTER-C-29-PLAGUE-ELEMENTAL-/260605473567?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_Toys_RolePlaying_RL&hash=item3cad4bf31f
Bigger than the normal one, but very imposing.
You could go to town with the GS to make it look similar.
-
Thanks for the pointer Azrael, I'll add it to the list of maybe's. The fenbeast is also a good candidate for a scratchbuild as it doesnt have to follow humanoid/realistic proportioning, so a little imperfection isnt a major problem, and I only need 1-2.
@Nat are you doing an Albion army?
I do hope so.
Im choosing between a number of armies, but I want to consider the model ranges available for each before I choose. Im after a human army, but havent decided between: Albion, Norse, Kislev and Araby.
