Title: new spacehulk
Post by: cjbennett22 on October 08, 2016, 02:04:24 AM
I'm very interested in finally getting a completed board game set of this game.  Which one do I really want?
There are several versions and several expansions and want to get the right one.

I really enjoy the comic book art of the first edition's hallway pieces but not too keen in trying to get the expansions for it but I am also not very keen on the upscaled miniatures of the newer versions or the crazy place settings of the genestealers newer miniatures.  But if that is the best version so be it I guess.

just looking to start out with one of the original box sets.

Thank you all for your input.

Spacehulk at its core is a simple but excellent gaming mechanic that has stood the test of time.  My Spacehulk journey has encompassed the original, the two expansions and the latest 3rd edition.

Last year I ebayed my original game and expansions and now just have 3rd edition because:
1. Most times I play it, it's for a quick game and there's plenty of tension in the basic rules (and they're easy to remember)
2. The introduction of Hybrids and complex psyker rules slows the game down
3. I don't have a 40k army so scale is not an issue for me
4. The 3rd edition floor tiles are superb not just in colour but they also have indentations - I use them in all sorts of space games; At43, alternative AVP (they are better than the Prodos tiles)

Whilst I absolutely recommend getting the game the GW iPad app is great for single play or if like me you have a train commute. Again it's simple and faithfully follows the original mechanic.

Hope that helps

I've got the 3rd edition (2009?) edition one and that is a delight, very fast paced, essentially a "best of" 2nd edition with a couple of expansion bits like the librarian, as far as I know.

The thick cardboard tiles seem quite tough, meatier and more substantial than previous editions.

The reason it goes for £££ now is usually just because of the Terminator figures everyone wanted.  You can usually buy the box without them for a cheaper price on eBay and then proxy or kitbash your own Termies if you want.

Yeah. Even the rules are for the 3rd and 4th releases are basically backwards compatible. Look for a copy of The Space Hulk Bible out there that takes all the rules and add-ons in WD released and compiles it into a single file. If you add on the few additional rules in the 09 release you're pretty much good. The rules for regular marines and guard and eldar in SH were especially fun.

As said earlier, grabbing figures from the regular 40k range is great and honestly, while the BA sculpts are great, unless you are finding them cheap I'd question their cost. For the costs of a complete SH (I sold off my unopened copy for almost 500usd) you likely could get something like Bug Hunt Corridor MDF terrain (think Hadley's Hope from Aliens), Spaceship X tiles, or cheaply cast parts with the Hirst Arts spaceship room stuff and have something 10x as cool and collect/build as you want vs taking a huge all at once $$$ drop.

back a few months when I decided I wanted this game but NOT REALLY, I saw a few first editions completed on ebay for less than 100 bucks.  The last one I saw and I would have bought it now, only sold for 85 or something like that.

I think the first edition, lacking some "cool" factor, with the lesser models and hallway pieces, makes for a cheaper sale but still a rare item on ebay.

There is actually one in GB right now on ebay for a buy it now of 160 shipped to me.  50 to ship it to the states is a bit much though, cant justify it.  I'll be patient but this is definitely on my shopping list for Christmas.

3rd editions are also only about 110 shipped from ebay and there are a handful on there for sale at all times but I don't like the models honestly, They're too much if you ask me  :)

ha! wow how the mighty have fallen (likely due to the 4th release causing the market to no longer count on the "limited" factor of the game). Personally I'm glad to see how those scalpers have taken it in the shorts with the Space Hulk gouging (admittedly pure schadenfreude). I actually might repurchase it then! While the tiles from the earlier boxes are nice deal I've never liked the models they came with, even when they were new. The first thing I did with my original Space Hulk was replace the terminiators with that glorious metal box from GW.

You're in the states? Perhaps we should team up on parts?

there are so many on ebay in the states.....brand new never opened 4th editions ready to go for less than 100 shipped but I just cant do it.....I want the first edition for the comic book art hallways and the overly simplistic models.  I just cant get passed the newer models that are all posed like they themselves are a diorama.

I own 3rd, and I purchased the books for 4th ed on ebay.  I read the both rulebooks side-by-side, line-by-line, and they are identical.  The only things you need to convert 3rd to 4th are the mission book, and the new punch card with boarding torpedoes, new room, and breach counters.

I also added to my set a dice bag that I painted with puffy paint in the shape of a blood angels winged blood drop.  I use it for the command chips, to keep them more secret.  Just drop 'em in, shake it up gently, and reach in blind.

Me and my brother we planning a trip to AFK games in Holt as he lives in the Detroit area and lansing is a good mid way point.  Holidays are coming up though so he and his fam are just coming over to hang with my fam at my house.

Maybe we can meet up and you can get me over my fear of the newer models  Ha.

wow,  something more to add to my Christmas list I guess.  Now I know if I can get a completed 1st edition off of ebay or something for less than that price ill be doing pretty good.  Otherwise I will just get the newest fourth edition.

Time to make a Christmas list actually!  HA

Wish my nephew was old enough to play it so I could give him my 2009 copy and get the 2014 version to scratch the completist itch I have!

I saw this and then promptly looked back on ebay for all the currently ongoing auctions, there is 1 in Australia that is for the third edition and brand new going for 114 with nine bids then pay shipping.  would suck to be that guy, thought he was getting a deal and then GW re-re-releases it for cheaper  LOL

125 dollars, US, is a pretty darn good deal considering the other board game prices right now, all pushing just past 100 bucks.

Can someone please tell me what's new in current re-edition. i know they added a few board pieces. But are there any new missions. For me this is a dicky move. As I pre ordered the previous one, aint we all, as it suppose to be Until stock last, and now they  put it back to the stores with new content. i feel kinda cheated. They shoul allow us to buy new stuff as a seprate box or something.

Alas my local shop didn't get any of the new one so I didn't get to grab it.  Price went up to £75, of course...

The 2016 launch is a re-release of the 2014 one.

The 2014 one has a handful of board pieces including boarding torpedo parts for deploying the Space Marine player.  It also has, I believe, 4 new scenarios which are re-jiggered from old White Dwarf ones in the 90s.  As far as it has been explained to me - even all of the iPad content they released at an eye popping price were re-releases of White Dwarf campaigns.

Dammit, I so want to have a complete version but buying another one, they're still avaiable in the local online auctions, just for a few cardboard pieces will hurth my wallet . And since I already own two copies that's just madnesss, I gues i can open the second one and sell it for parts. Never did this, i wonder if it's worth it. At least since all the games sold so fast i hope GW is already developing add ons. Hybrids are ready to go, just need some rules...

If you're patient on eBay sometimes people sell the box without minis or piecemeal?

That is what I intend to do - wait until I find an auction just for the boards.  It might cost £40 or so but then I can use the extras to make new scenarios of my own...

(as though I don't have enough projects to see me into retirement already ha ha!)

I made a bid on ebay for a first edition complete and in good condition.  It might be missing the dice and the sand timer though, no biggy.  its not a low ball bid but not a high one either.  I'll find out if I win it later.  My ear isn't all that close to the ground for things at GW but having never heard of them coming out with the space hulk game again is a bit frazzling.

Finding the pdf's of the extra pieces is pretty easy and to make them myself is just as easy so I'm not forking over cash for the re-released stuff,  GW looking for easy money I would bet.  When you don't need to redesign anything or pay for any more tooling it would make the game very cheap to produce, I'm sure they make 120 US dollars on each box sold.  That said, there are a few of them on the shelf at my local store  :)

Yeah!  I have a copy of the first edition in the mail today. It might still make it to me on my birthday this friday. Very excited to hunt down the other tiles in white dwarf mags and making them myself.

Rad to heaer you're playing with him. We play a fair amount of SW:Armada with my son. He broke down crying last night when Ackbar broadsided the ever living crap out of his ISD-2 destroying it in a ridiculously close attack run. 10 minutes late he was laughing bombing my Home One into atoms with Darth Vader. I'm sure he'll be back for more, mate! :)

I am continuing my refurbishing of my new copy of spacehulk.  I have my second terminator sergeant in the mail right now so I can do 2 full squads and know who is who and then I have the dice bags now for the blips and CP's and also in the mail is a counter/clicker to keep count of the killed stealers.  Then I can go to my local shop and buy 2 custom red dice and three custom green dice.

Once I have everything I can start on repairing the box and really nicely packaging the whole thing up.  No painting anything just yet.  The gene stealers came from ebay painted, nicely, green.  The original plastic terminators are all there but 2 will forever sit out in substitute for the pewter terminators.  It should all streamline the setup and gameplay and I am excited.  by the end of march I should have a really nice set.  The few times I have played it, it is just such a wonderfully simple and fun game with a ton of nuance strategy built right into it.

Thank you all for your help, I will post pics of my refurbishing project in a bit.

started working on my spacehulk foamcore storage trays yesterday!!!  started with refurbishing the box halves, they turned out like how I had hoped, stiff and square.

Got the tray for the tiles mostly done.  I will start posting pictures later.

I started with the "PITFALL" mission tiles from white dwarf 114, found an auction for white dwarf 113 and 114 for 12 bucks shipped so I have those all done.  Love the rules for the holes and rubble honestly.

Has anyone else ever done the foamcore board storage trays for the first edition?  Can you share your pictures if you have?  :)

well, I actually need 3 doors with stands or 2 doors with 3 stands  :/

the set I got from ebay had 20 doors with 19 stands and the pitfall mission needs 22 doors.  luckily the storage bin section can hold that many perfectly I think even though I only designed it with the 19 doors on hand.

Thank you for anyone who has them and is willing to part with them.   :)

Played the pitfall mission tonight and the space marines pulled off a doozy of a maneuver with the 6 cp's and the flamer was able to cover for himself and the sergeant to make it to a garbage chute.  In the second go, cause why not, the space marines were slaughtered off  LOL

Hey man,

I have a SH set that I'll never use for SH, I sold the miniatures off and use the Tiles for Necro/Inquisitor. I can part with the doors/stands.

I'm in the UK, but if you can't find any closer to home then drop me a line :)

alright, still a few more things to do, but without further delay......

the whole thing lifts the lid of the box 1/2" only because I need that thickness of foam in between the 2 trays I made as some models, including the counter mechanism, stick out above their trays.  All trays are lined with sheet metal and all models have a magnet inside their base.  As for painting them, simple models equals simple paint jobs.  I made sure to do some nice shading and to put some type of symbols on their shoulder pads to signify the 2 different squads.  I am still pleased with how they came out so that's all that matters   :)

The genestealers have their own tray to bring out onto the table top and to contain those models during play.  Each space marine squad gets their own tray (somewhat similar of their docking pods) with the flamer counters.  Inside the corner box of the bottom tray is another tray that can come out with the C.A.T. counter and the "overwatch" counters in it.  The lid of the counter box I intend to be used as a dice rolling tray during play.  It lastly houses the 2 bags with the blips and CP's and the dice.  Everything is themed as blood angels vs. green genestealers.

Yet to be completed.....
I need to make some green triangles to mark genestealer deployment points as in the newer editions.
The genestealers are all on bases flocked with fake grass so I want to clean that off and paint them black so everything has a plain black base much like the doors.
I need 3 more doors with stands.

I also had to repair the box pieces.  I glued their boxes shut where they fold up at and then lastly glued a thin piece of posterboard into each's bottom.  They were much, MUCH more rigid after that and when everything is in the box it makes it all a very strong, completely filled cube I am proud to put on my shelf instead of scared it will just damage itself more by just sitting there.  Ha

Thank you, I honestly just piece these kinds of things together as I go with no plan  :)  just a basic idea that keeps growing as I go.
As long as it protects everything perfectly and helps speed up setup and cleanup im a happy guy.

Next is my box of heroquest, I still have no idea about the whole thing.  Hopefully in June I can get that done.
