A new month a new thread, and we are moving into the final strectch for some, whilst other are faultering behind ;)

Two shamans, one command stand, 3 units of archers and 8 unit of horsearchers done using block-basecolours and Armypainter. I will go back to these to add some more detail colour after AP dries! but I am not unhappy by how they came out so far.
KK, so pictures ... they are a bit darker then usual, because I used the downstairs lighting, without special do-daahs, and I tried autocorrecting them when I uploaded, but IMO the darker picture shows the effect of Armypainter off better.
Shamans before and after

Lex I understood that the Armypainer was not dry when you take the shots?
The aspect is a little bit glossy for my taste, but it seems the armypainter is doing its job
-
Very interesting stuff. I wonder how different the effect would be if you used a Devlan Mud wash instead of AP? I'd guess it'd look pretty similar but a little flatter. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing these based up and rephotographed.
Did you find the process faster/easier than non-dipping?
-
no, dry in 12 hours, total dry in 24, and those shots are done < 1 hour after painting 9-) but I am not sure how I end up tomorrow for time ::)
But indeed, it seems to do the trick, although I started hesitantly applying some, I switch to putting on serious dabs....

I did some block colours before applying AP, and will go in to touch up a LOT of stuff before going to basing. Also probably end up with a matt finish eventualy, altough the shininess might wear of ahen AP dries
-
Varnish Matt "Marabu Mattlack" kills the glossy effect quite well. I do not know how it works with armypainter
-
Ostland Empire. Didn't get anything done on the Ostland army this week other than basing and priming a hero. A lot of thing cropped up and took all my time, but will hopefully be getting back to business this week and getting some painting done. I have a lot of units left to do in order to make the December wrap up, but I'm still trying to get the army finished by then.
Nice work as usual azrael71 in getting multiple units done. I really like those Forest Goblins.
The shading of the Army Painter seems to have worked out well. Lex are the results what you were expecting? I was thinking of using a Minwax dip when I do my Ork & Goblin army and from your results it looks like that should work.
The Minwax dip method (and Army Painter too I assume) is very glossy even when it dries, but a dullcoat finish will get rid of that very nicely.
If there is another round in January I'll be signing up again. Probably with Orks and Goblins.

Yeah, more so now they have had a chance to dry out. I will go back to the units to "paint between the lines" and in retrospect should have applied some more "base" colours as that would effectivly have meant the units where fieldable after the AP treatment. And of course I still need to "matt" them up a bit.... right now they look like they are wet with rain......
-
Have you 'dipped' the entire army now then Lex? If not, then obviously it would would be a good idea to finish off those details now prior to dipping the rest.
Its a good overall effect BTW, I'm not sure on your choice in having 'yellow Goblins' though. If and when I complete a Viking army that I've got the start of I may end up using this army builder technique, even though I have always considered it 'cheating'...
-

No, I just have the characters, 3 units of archers and 8 units of horsearchers done. Not knowing what to expect I did not want to "risk" fubarring all of it in one go 8)
Also, I am "touching" up the dipped units now, and that has become easier, just need to fill in the spaces between the lines.... and in some cases reapply AP later.
And a greater part of "the rest of my army" is on the moddeling board right now, as I decided NOT to use Orc Boarboys for the Winged Lancers but am making a more theme appropriate sollution.
-
Again not much activity on here :o will you all make your deadline of December ??? :D
Now is the time to be knuckling down to push on to the finish.
This week I have been mainly painting savage & black orcs, whilst pondering how to do a chaos dwarf terrain piece!
2 units of savage orcs.

Just got 6 units of orc warriors to do now and then I am done :)
Once I have painted these I will take a few full army pics, then on to my next project :)
-
Impressive azrael!
wow...
-
Those savage orcs look excellent. How did you paint the skin?
And my entry, finished but for the basing/varnishing (it's raining so they'll have to wait), my Inner Circle Knights featuring generously donated knights from my fellow TOWM Painters...
As you might be able to see I removed the 'tassles' I'd made for the lances as they actually looked worse painted than they did when they were just greenstuffed (I thought it'd be the other way round!). I left on the two pennants which l think look ok and the cloak I made for the standard bearer. I think I'll have to leave GS work to other people for a while!
Next up it's going to be a wizard, he's half done already so I may actually get an entry in on time next week.
-

Very nice, and as an aside in clearing up some boxes I found a little zip-lock bag with another character pack in it....
And of course, nice Orcs, I really am getting rather jealous of both your ability to paint quickly, and of course the time that you have to do so... :(
As a bit of an update, I guesstimate that I should have my unit of Legion finished mid next week, depending on how much time I can get in the evenings. I'm likely going to have to call it a day after that, at least until the New Year as I'll have both RL demands on my evening free time (it's graduate job application season), and I'm going to try to see if I can paint some stuff to sell on ebay. If I manage to do the later then maybe I can get the wife a decent Xmas present... ;)
-
Great looking knights.
I thought the GS work looked fine, but they are your army after all.
As for the orc skin, they are easy, camo green followed by green wash, sorted.
In regards time, I find that proper planning allows me to maximise the time I have available, I wouldn't say I had more or less than anyone else :). After painting a lot of armies for warmaster I have found a number of ways to get a satisfactory paint job done as quickly as possible.
Having 2 small girls, a very active whippet and a wife who works full-time as well as being on call 24/7 means I have to carefully alot my time to specific things. That said I could do with 36 hours in a day.
The important thing is that you are painting more than you were before :) That has to be a good thing.
-
pw that inner circle knights looks really good!
I like them more without the little flag.
I am stuck with a unit of undeads charitos... but I think I could not take the brushes unitl the 20th of this month. what a pitty. But always reconfort seeing your new painted units, ;D
keep the good working!
-
After a bit of illicit kitchen varnishing I've got the Inner Circle Knights finished off (though the varnish dulled the red a bit so they may get some more love):

And this week's early entry, a yellow-Santa wizard:

Eagle-eyed forum fans might just recognise the colour scheme from somewhere. It seems that originality has been sacrificed on the altar of speed painting.
Both will get a quick 'grass trim' when the glue dries...

Beautiful...

Very nice, it also seems to have dulled the metal a bit, which I think looks very nice with the red. In fact, it's given me an idea to maybe paint one of my Empire heroes in a gun metal and red scheme. Hmmm....

Yes, just a bit:

Well, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery I hear... ;)

Hi,
Here it goes my little contribution... Is the second unit of Tomb swarm scarabs. I am not sure if I want to use them based or not. Last home-playtest of the unit, makes me feel that I prefer the unit without basing, with the 20mm frontal that the figures has.
To base or not to base? that's the question
just quoting shakespeare...
So until I have my ideas clear, I will post the pic of the second unit without basing.

I know the pic quality is horrible, sorry mates

Well every single unit in the game, with the exception of characters and a few really, really large beasties (well ok, one) and some siege equipment are mounded on 40x20mm bases. So, by not basing them to the Warmaster standard you are making life difficuilt for yourself, never mind increasing its attacking frontage, and of course reducing its footprint on the table, therefore making it easier to command and more difficuilt to outflank.
And of course the best use for these in 'normal' games of Warmaster would IMHO be to represent units gained through the 'raise dead' spell...
-
Well, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery I hear...
It's certainly something that I hope you find flattering - the compliment I'm trying to pay is to say that your figure looks fantastic and that I admire your choice of colours. Picking schemes is something I can do but it just takes forever and I'm pushed for time. Of course I tried to disguise things by adding in the funny little book carrier dude! Yours still looks better than mine but I reckon I got close enough. The main thing I prefer about yours is the way he is central to the base while mine looks a little off centre. And of course now I'm eying up your Romans (that chap on the horse is superb, I was admiring the skintone on his arm this morning!).

Another quiet week on here.
I like the Empire wizard, very nice.
I have finished my final 6 units of the Orc and Goblin army.
Here they are, Orc warriors:

I will take some full army shots and that is me done ;D
In the interim before the next challenge, I am hoping to get some bits and bobs finished (empirex4, chaosx20 and dwarvesx8), before I choose my next force.
Keep up the hard work, I look forward to seeing the finished results.
Now got to find an opponent with 7500 points of troops :)
Mick

Clearly, you'll need to paint another 7500 pt. loaner army so you can put all your orcs on the field.

That is a truly insanely large army. You know, the most I've ever fielded in a game was 3k, and most of that was bare metal... I really would like to play a truly huge game of Warmaster or Warmaster Ancients one day, it might even take a day to play at 7k+pts...
As an aside, I have been slowly plugging away at my unit. I've finished the command stand, one other stand and have almost finished the final stand. Just got the sheild markings on the 2nd half of the stand and all the metalics to touch up, then its done. I guesstimate being able to post a picture on Monday, maybe Tuesday this coming week. Then I've got RL concerns to take up my evenings for a couple of weeks, and then I'll be on to some Space Hulk figures ocne I polish off that pegasus, then I'll go onto finishing off my WM Empire army for the WW, then back to my EIR army in Feburary. Since I'll have a bit more time during the day available with the girls being in nursery for three days a week 9-3, I might even be able to make better progress...
Oh and I'm setting up/relocating a wargames club. We're going to have our first club night on Wednesday the 25th of November, actually I'd best post an update in the thread I started...
-
Azrael, it is really amazing and nice. Congratulations!.
I like a lot the banners of the infantery units with the moon, sun and jaws, and the pump wagons!! Quite colourful also.
It would be really interesting to see that huge HORDE moving (or being GS, sometimes trying to move... ;D) towards a rival army on the table. :)
-
Azrael - that's superb, simply stunning seeing them all together. I genuinely can't work out how you work so fast at this standard. I'm very very jealous. I'm also jealous of the little houses, are they the old Forgeworld ones?
As for my efforts, I'm not sure how long I can hide behind the tactic of painting a character each week! I've started work on the next unit of crossbowmen and hope I can get them finished by the end of next week to keep up on the pace - it'll mean that I've got a legal army even if it is only about 800 points or so and if it's packed out with characters and warmachines. After than who knows, I'll aim to paint up another unit of knights I expect as they're relatively quick and always useful in games. But, I've just accepted a commission on a Blood Bowl team so don't be surprised if there's a return to the characters...
-
Azrael Congratulation for your good work and the huge beatifull awsome goblinoid/orcish army you had rised!!!
This kind of things helps me a lot to still painting and improving :)
As you said in a post elsewhere... This is what the game is all about
Really nice army, when you take all those little green goblins in a battle, do not forget to post some pictures in action, will be astonish!
-
Greetings!
Azrael, you are a star! Not only you accomplished more than almost all of us combined but you also kept the tale going. :) Even if in reality it might be that there is you and your 70 clones painting that army (hence azrael 71 ;D).
I expected I might have a break due to real life duties, although I am still ashamed it was for so long. I am going back though and you can expect some updates this week.
So, don't give up and let the tale spin again!
Cheers! :)
-
While I slowly work on my crossbowmen, I'm wondering if the TOWM Painters fancy sharing their painting tips and strategies? Having been inspired by azrael71's chaos ideas I'd like to know more about how everyone paints. Or any other tips. My two tips of the day are for products I lile using.
1) Vallejo grey pumice for basing which I find easier to manage than sand and glue.
2) Superglue gel, which solved the problem of how to apply 'clump foliage' which refused to stick with PVA or regular watery superglue. If you've ever suffered with clump foliage attaching itself to everything but your bases then you might like this stuff.
Anyone else got any tips? Stomm, I'd love to hear your recipe for painting flesh...
-
I actually use several different techniques for painting flesh, all dependant upon the figure I'm painting, whether it's a character or not, the colour scheme and painting techniques used for the rest of the model and so on. I'll give you a run down from simplest, to most complext I guess...
The simplest is the old Flesh Wash over a black undercoated, Bestial Brown and then Skull white 'gunk brush', followed by an Elf Flesh highlight. I use this for my most of my Empire army, as I paint the Reiklanders white first, and then sort out the details afterwards.
Then the scheme I've been using for my romans is to paint Tallarn Flesh over the black undercoat, very carefully so as to ensure that eyes, etc... aren't painted. Then highlight with Elf Flesh. For the Legate, same thing, except IIRC I either added the new Flesh Wash (whatever its called) after the Tallarn Flesh, or possibly after the whole process, and then re-highlighted with Elf Flesh. I've tried using Bronzed Flesh with the new Tallarn Flesh, but it just doesn't work, completely different hue of colour. So I'm afraid that my Romans are a little bit pasty skinned for Italians...
And then of course the most complex or long-winded skin painting system I use is to go through from Chaos Black, Dark Flesh, 50/50 Dark Flesh and Bronzed Flesh mix, then 25/75 mix, then Bronzed Flesh, then a series of watered down Elf Flesh top-glaze highlights (using heavily watered down paints saves on mixing and blending when used for final highlights), with some final point highlights of Skull White. I've only used this system so far on IIRC my yellow Empire Wizard, the Averland Halberdier strip and the Nuln unit of Halberdiers. The reason obviously being that it takes a bloody long time to do, and also happens to be the same skin system I use for WH and 40K, well until Tallarn Flesh came out anyway...
-
Incidentally I finished all the shield designs on the unit I'm working on last night. So now all I need do is re-touch the metal areas, especially the shield edging and boss, then glue the figures back onto the base and its all done. Then I'll be moving on to other projects, probably until January.
I might see about basing the figures I have finished though, and maybe finishing off the 7/12ths fininished other unit of legion that I was working on earlier on in the year. I'll have to take a look at that pumice stuff, I don't suppose you know anyone in London that stocks it? I would rather not order something that will double in price with postage...
-
Not sure about suppliers in London (I'd guess anywhere that sells Vallejo paint might have it). I've just run out and will be ordering mine from Maelstrom Games (free postage if you spend over £10).
Thanks for the flesh walk through. Your 'Legate-level' one is similar to mine with the exception that I haven't tried not painting the eyes with and all of my guys get a flesh wash. I the highlight with a pre-mixed pot of (I think) Dwarf Flesh+Bleached Bone which is probably very similar to Elf flesh. If I left the eyes black I might be able to skip the wash but I expect that'd delay things as slapping the Tallarn Flesh on is one of my early 'messy' stages. The last one sounds very much too involved for my WM stuff but having seen the Wizard it certainly works a treat.
-
Well the face on the legate itself happens to have a mould line running right through it, so it was nigh on impossible to paint the face as well as could have been the case had it not been there. So the legate's eyes did get filled with Tallarn Flesh. But the legionnaries themselves have fairly well defined eyes and mouths, so it's comparatively simple to avoid painting those.
IIRC your Empire army is the Talebheim one right? IoW Red and White? If so, then you could use the same technique that I use to paint my Reiklanders, but then obviously adding a stage for painting the red quarters, halves or however you do the red parts of the uniforms (varying quartered, halved and so on patterns between brigades is a neat trick BTW in case you hadn't figured that out yet). Here is my step-by-step for quickly and relatively effectively painting white cloth (and skin) on Warmaster figures.
Undercoat Chaos Black (yes black)
Gunk Brush* Bestial Brown (Calthan Brown might work better now, it didn't exist the last time I did this, and it basically seems to be the same colour)
Gunk Brush Snakebite Leather (you can skip this part if you really want)
Gunk Brush Skull White
Touch up the Skull white, usually just neatening things up a bit
Flesh Wash the skin areas (the new flesh wash isn't strong enough, so maybe a wash of Scorched Brown might do the trick instead)
Highlight skin areas with Elf Flesh
Pick out other details in Chaos Black, and paint and highlight as necissary...
You could if you really wanted even paint pretty much the whole of the rest of the model with just a series of dark washes, browns for leather and so on. I've never really been happy with this though, I much prefer to work up than work down. But skin tones seem to be the one big exception to this, flesh was over dry or gunk brushed white works really well IMHO, just so long as you then highlight with Elf Flesh.
As an aside, when I add the sand, etc.. to my bases prior to undercoating, I also gunk brush the bases up to the snakebite leather stage. Then I go back over with some bleached bone, and if the white has spilled over then I'll add a brown wash first to tone things down again.
*Gunk brushing is like drybrushing, but with still a lot of almost half dry paint on the brush. It results in much quicker, if messier coverage than drybrushing and gives much more pronounced contrast. You can achieve the same, or neater effects with drybrushing, but it will take so much longer that you may as well be line or layer highlighting rather than trying a more rapid technique.

Finished the Legion unit, just waiting until tomorrow (well later on today, I really ought to get to bed) to get the camera and take a decent photo of them.

And here we go:

I hope that you like them, and needless to say as you all know it took bloody agest to get all 34 of those shield designs painted, never mind the rest of the parts of the models.
Now I've got RL things occupying the next two weeks, but I should be able to fit in a bit of Space Hulk modelling, and maybe some test painting on one of the Terminators that came free with White Dwarf when 40K was released. I think that I'd like to get a 2nd unit of Legionaries finished off before xmas though, and ideally the two units I've finished, plus the half finished unit of legionaries and the Legate based up and tabletop ready if I can...
-
Hmm, just noticed that the shield boss on the Centurion needs to be touched up. It's funny that you don't notice these things 'in the flesh', probably as the photos are blown up far bigger than RL...
BTW, if anyone can edit these photos together and email them to me that would be great. I'd like to post them on 'coolminiornot', but lack even basic image editing software. Well anything that can splice things together, I've just got the cropping and red eye reduction stuff in iPhoto...

Very, very, very nice work on these. ;D
May have took a while, but they certainly show the quality of the work.

Cheers, it seems like I'm taking a break from painting etc... this week. I have prepped the rest of already part-finished Legion unit and part of a 3rd unit by temporarily gluing between four and six of the individual models to coffee stirrers. I've found that cramming twelve (a whole stand's worth) onto a coffee stirrer is a little too crowded to paint well, and is too many to paint a couple of stages in the usual hour or so of painting that I can cram into an evening after the kids are in bed.
Anyway, got the first evening at the club tonight. Luckily I popped to the doctors just around the corner to get myself some antibiotics (recurring bronchitis), so I just popped by on the way home. They were still decorating the room we are going to use. It's not going to be perfect, but at least we can use it, and I'm looking forward to playing something, be it Space Hulk, 40K or whatever... I'll probably plumb for SH as it takes up less space and I can stop as needed to help people find us, etc...

They look great Stomm. And I think you've overtaken me for speed as I've come to a near standstill. I've got two bases of a unit of Crossbows painted but it'll be the weekend before they're done. That said, my reason for not painting tonight is that I was playing WM ;D. My plucky empire got thoroughly spanked by some dwarfs. Not knowing what Slayers and Rangers do led to a suicidal charge by some knights who discovered that their terror causing mount was a liability and then found themselves carrying hits when they advanced into the 'we can chase horses' Rangers. (I take it we did this right, we maintained hits from the round against the massacred slayers (I'd taken 4) when we calculated the results of the 'advance' combat). The only thing I can say in my defence is that my army is prettier than his! (It's silver).

Just to show that I'm still in the game, here's a unit of crossbows finished bar the basing (I'm waiting for some more basing pumice to arrive):

Once these are based I'll finally have a legal army painted.
General, Hero, Wizard, 2 Halberd, 2 Crossbow, 2 Knights, Cannons, Helblaster, Steamtank. By my reckoning that's 925 points... Perhaps not the hardest army around but I'm pretty pleased nonetheless.

pw, looks good. I realize you have separate a pair of crossbowman to displace them in the base. What a good ida. I should do the same!
Last week I finish a chariot undead unit, and when I have time I will take the shot and uploaded here. (I am still in the game, but hard times for me and the hobby, I expect in january to came back with more time to dedicate to warmaster).
regards

Here is the chariot unit that I call "the twin serpents". I do not really know why to call it this way, but I paint a double head serpent in the banner. To sum up, more nasty bones on the road.
