I wanted to share some of the conversions I did for my Dwarf Army, and then I realized that I wanted to also show some the Conversions I did for my Chaos mortals list, and then...
So I will post the Dwarf and Chaos stuff I have pictures of now. I will photos of the other stuff later on.
First up, Dwarfs:
Dwarf general. modelled after one of the Dwarf Character models in WHFB at the time. The WHFB model was standing on a shield held by two other Dwarfs. So I did that and added some details, with the general's rune stone in the background:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0006.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0009.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0008.jpg)
Next I worked on the Runesmith. A mini-diorama showing the Runesmith working at the forge. The banner is plumber's epoxy and brass rod. The images on the banner (and the runestone, above) are freehand.
Dwarf Gyrocopters:
I thought it would be cool if the Gyros where flying over the tree tops. The skeleton of the tree is florist's wire, and plumber's epoxy to cover. It is an early sculpt attempt.

Now for some Chaos:
I was reading the posts on the yahoo group, and someone mentioned using Marauder horsemen to drive the chaos hounds. I liked the idea and made up a few units:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0038.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0036.jpg)
I wanted a Tzeench unit, so I used flyers from teh plastic Epic scale. I added larger eyes and used the packmaster as a rider on the flyer. Some of the folks I play with think these look more like chariots. You may notice one of the flyers has a larger eye. I painted the eye as a bruised, swollen and half-closed eye.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0044.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0042.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0039.jpg)
At the time I painted this army, I had a Warmaster league going. One of the scenarios we had used objective markers. So I made two Chaos themed markers:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0019.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0022.jpg)
An finally, the General:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0028.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0027.jpg)

:o
by the tremendous amount of detailed brushwork !!
I love the Dwarf on Shield, had been toying with that idea, but could not get it to work for me !! Kudos !!
-
Absolutely stunning effort.
I love the chaos hounds, makes a lot more sense the packmaster being on a mount, what with them being Cavalry ;D.
My friend has done his dwarf general on a shield but it is nowhere near as good as this one.
Hope to see more soon.
-
Very cool stuff. Those alternate packmasters make those Chaos Hound units look really great.

Now that Pendraken has released the worms that I sculpted, I decided to update my Warmaster projects thread.
Here are the worms with Empire Skirmishers:
Empire Skirmishers getting charged:
Compared to a US Quarter:
On stands. I will use the worms as daemon cavalry. As promised in other threads, I will sculpt up some riders for them. I just am not sure when!
I want to post more pictures -- I painted up some Tzeentch daemon hordes and screamers that I really like.
-
Now that Pendraken has released the worms that I sculpted, I decided to update my Warmaster projects thread.
Beautiful work, great idea with the Chaos hounds, and great snakes... (hmm, is there a Fremen army list for Epic? or FWC?)
They just seem a little perky and well-disciplined without a rider -- having trouble making sense of the 'worms on parade' formation :-).
-
Another update! Here is an army shot of everything painted up for my Cthulu themed daemon army:
I'm happy with how it is coming out, but over the last few battles I realized that I need more characters. The leaders for this army are very expensive. To make matters worse, none of my daemon wizards have gotten a spell off yet!
I assembled the unit of Daemon hounds for the army. Here is a WIP shot of the Hounds of Tindalos:
These guys are a conversion of the chaos hounds. The green stuff flames (or clouds) are formed when the hounds rip into our part of reality from where ever they live. I still intend to sculpt my own hounds from scratch and see if Pendraken would be willing to cast them.
DaveC kindly cast up some daemon units, and I have most of them painted now. Here is a unit of Khorne Daemon flyers:
I hope you like the eyes!
Four units of Slaanesh daemon swarms:
The tough part here is that I wanted to stick with lighter purple-ish colors, but I wanted to be able to distinguish the unit from each other. I think I was able to acheive what I wanted.
Here is the start of a Tzeentch army:
I had the good fortune to win an auction with a bunch of Tzeentch daemon units. I have most of them painted up. The daemon hounds were cast by DaveC.
A unit of daemon horde:
I went for flame colors. I like the brightness of these. I wanted the red/orange stripes to appear as if they were fixed in place, and the daemons were changing colors as they moved through the stripes. I'm trying to figure out how to paint the daemons to represent that they are twisting reality...
So this next unit:
I painted this one up to be a "negative" -- light in the craks and darkest on the topmost edges. They came out OK, but I may touch them up later.
The first unit I painted:
I like blue daemons. I hope you do too. I tried to get the highlights to be very bright, as if the color would hurt your eyes if they were real.
Screamers:
The body on these fades from yellow to red.
More Screamers:
Sort of a compliment to the previous unit of screamers, only this time the trailing lines fade from yellow to red.
And the two units of Daemon hounds:
Again, the almost-white highlights are to represent color almost too bright to look at.
Some works in progress:
Two daemon leaders:
The one on the left is an AD&D 15mm figure, a Mindugulph Kendu. If anyone has more of these, please PM me. The leader on the right is going to have a ring of fire around him. I may build it up a little higher before calling it done.
A unit of Daemon chariots:
As you can see, these are disc riders. The models came from DaveC, but I converted them quite a lot. While adding the spikes around the disc, the hand fell off one of the disc riders. Which sparked the rest of the work. I replaced the hands with fireballs and did the same for the other riders. When it came time to make the stand with plumber's epoxy and a bit of clear acrylic rod, I thought it would be cool if the discs were leading a wedge of flame as they hurtled toward the enemy. I finally finished the putty work on these earlier today. You might also note the flames coming off the back of each of the riders.
And a greater daemon:
He is partially painted. I need to highlight the robes and fix a blemish on his leg. And do the base, of course.
As you can tell, I've been busy!
-
Very nice work. I am looking forward to see the chariots and characters painted. Great job on sculpting the flames!
-
Ow, my eyes hurt.
Truly spectacular, some of those pics a too bright :)
Really great looking army, you can't go wrong with dave's sculpts as they are excellent.
Glad to see another great daemon army out there.
-
very impressive

I decided the Cthulhu daemons needed another Hero. I found a "Faceless Horror" made by Reaper (I think). Here it is:
And here is another Reaper figure, converted a bit to be a Slaanesh Greater Daemon:
I had to reposition her so that she would face the short edge of the stand. Originally she had scales on her torso and conical breast coverings, so I restored the proper flesh to her torso. I replaced the weapon (it was a spear). I liked the wierd face and the hand in the hair.
-
Great models and very thematic.
-
Great model work
-
Great paint in the faceless horror full of eyes and mouths!! uuuuuummmmmm, you genius!
but where is chtuluh himself? did Metal Magic do not have a critter of chtuluh in his Dunwich detective range of figures?
regards
-
Glad you folks like what you see!
The faceless horror was going to be a bit more gruesome -- tendrils pulling people into its various mouths -- but I decided to forgo that. I modified an old 10/0 brush to do the eyes. The brush was no longer pointed. The bristles fanned out a bit. Using nail clippers, I removed the wayward bristles and was left with a tiny brush that I used to line the eyes. I used it to paint in the smaller irises also.
JChaos: The General is supposed to be a stand in for Cthulhu himself. I was thinking about using Reaper's "Eldritch Demon" for Cthulhu, but for some reason decided to make my own. I think I was concerned that the miniature was too large. Here's my general:
Let me know your opinion: Should I get a proper Cthulhu for the army general? What miniature should I use?
I started looking at the flying chariots drawn by bhyakees last night. I found some inspriration for the chariot. I will start some sculpting this weekend and see how far I get.
-
You know Iam a huge fan of this project as well as a Cthulhu geek.
I think I would stick with your general as going for a representation of Cthulhu may end up with a VERY large model ;)
-
I took some time off from daemons to start my Skaven army ;)
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0021.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0029.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0023.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0024.jpg)
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0026.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0027.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Misc%20Painting%20projects/DSC_0028.jpg)
OK, so they aren't the right scale. I painted these up for a family member for Christmas. Reaper Mouslings.
I did get these finished up for the daemons. This is a unit of Tzeentch daemon beasts. The figures on either end are old school GW flamers of Tzeentch, with their arms slightly re-positioned to fit on a 2cmx4cm base. I added some extra flames. The figure in the middle is a Malifaux Poltergiest figure. I replaced the hands to look like the flamers' "hands", and added flames.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0017-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0016-1.jpg)
For the next two weeks I will be focusing on getting terrain ready for the Warmaster tournament in Dover NH. Then I will get back to painting more Warmaster!
-
Those skavens are amazing!
The demons are nice too I supposed :)
-
So I made two Chaos themed markers:
How did u make this central round thing with a chaos hero inside?
-
How I made the round central thing with the Chaos hero inside:
I started with a plastic bottle cap. I filled it with cardboard so that I had a disk of plastic and cardboard. I covered the disc with epoxy putty, which probably took me 2-3 sessions so that I could do one side and then the other.
Before the putty set, I pressed a Chaos Hero into the putty and pressed the chaos symbol into the putty. I built up the putty around the hero to make it look like he was carved out of the rock. I used putty to create the pedestal under his feet. The texture that you see is the sculpting tool pressing and spreading the putty.
I used 5 minute epoxy on the edges, then dipped the edge into a tray of small pebbles.
After all the epoxy had set (I waited 24 hours), I started painting. I wanted it to look vaguely like obsidian (volcanic glass). I painted everything with silver. After the silver dried, I re-painted everything with watered down Dark Angels Green.
I can post a few more pictures of the monument later.
-
thanks. it is interesting.
-
Bel,
Here are some more pictures of the Chaos objective marker that I made.
This is the back of the monument:
Another couple pictures of the front:
Looking at the pictures, I see that I coated the back and sides of the bottle cap with 5 minute epoxy and dipped the cap in small pebbles. (Or more likely, I placed each pebble.) The open end of the bottle cap was filled either with cardboard or styrofoam. The open end was then covered with Plumber's epoxy (an epoxy putty that sets in 5 minutes). The hero was pressed into the putty while it was still soft. Green stuff was used to brige any gaps between the plumber's epoxy and the miniature.
-
thanks. nice idea, epoxy - > obsidian, I'll try.
-
Time for an update. The Warmaster tournament was a success! I think I've been able to get 3 new people playing WM!
In case you haven't heard, the NorthEast of the US was hit by a huge snowstorm last week. I spent Saturday shoveling an 8ft snow pile down to a 4 ft snowpile so that I could actually see oncoming traffic before leaving my driveway. Later on Saturday I was on the roof getting rid of ice dams. Yes, we had water coming in through the ceiling. Now we don't, so I assume my efforts fixed the problem. At least for now.
I took a break from Daemons to finish up a unit of HE Swordmasters. I found that the armour wash that I made using Magic Floor Polish works very well on the scale mail. I'm ready to do more HE infantry now! While taking pictures, I took pictures of other HE units.
New Swordmasters:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0054-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0057.jpg)
Older Swordmasters:

Some Phoenix Guard. The banner is free hand:
Some HE Chariots:
OK, now for something different. Three wound counters, inspired by another thread (Guthwine's? not sure of the author).
The smaller ones use a clockface scaled to the size of a fender washer. I printed out the clock face, and user white glue to attach to the washer. I punched out the hole in the middle of the paper. I used a rare earth magnet as the pivot and the thing that holds the counter together. (I had to make the holes in the washers slightly larger so that the magnet would fit in and rotate freely. I have a half-round needle file that was excellent for this.) The decoration on top is a piece of platic card which just fits inside the numbers of the clock face. The magnet is glued to the center of the plastic circle. The top is decorated with tombstones and bones, with sand and PVA glue to finish the decoration. A broken spear point points to the current number.
The larger one was my first attempt. I had a larger fender washer, and found a smaller washer that fit perfectly inside the hole. The top is a circle the size of the large washer, with a window cust out to show a number. Under the plastic circle, I attached sheet magnet. With the pivot glued to the bottom, the sheet magnet holds the top onto the bottom. I painted the washer black, and put on numbers. This was tricky, and some numbers were done 4 times. Because the sheet magnet is so strong, I had to put a layer of clear plastic between the washer and the plastic circle. (This seems to make turning the wheel much easier, and prevents the motion from rubbing off the painted numbers.) The top is decorated with a bit from GW, and sand and PVA.
And lastly, a Daemon character with two objective markers:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0045.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0046.jpg)
I hope you like what you see. I have been getting the urge to sculpt Chariots for the Cthulu Daemons. Maybe I'll get something I like this time!
-
No, Claus is the mastermind behind the turnmarkers! :)
Very nice work, especially the swordmasters look awesome. Great job on the banner of the blue ones!
-
Sweet banner work.
-
Yep agree with azrael, the banners are soo great!
And the swordmasters are cool too!
-
The start of my Nippon army! I did them for the Pendraken painting competition.
I hope you like!
Pictures of the long-promised Daemon chariots are coming soon!
-
Nice.
My gaming buddy is chuntering about starting this army soon :)
-
beautiful! good luck with the contest!
-
Like all of your stuff that Nippon Cavalry looks great! I look forward to receiving their charge. With my spears set of course! :D
-
Thanks! I can't wait to run you down with them!
Seriously, I finished a unit of Ronin last night. Now I need to go back and finish the other two stands of this unit.
I have not forgotten that I promised pictures of chariots. I got a little distracted sculpting riders. :D
-
nice as always
-
Thanks for the compliments guys!
I have pictures of the long promised Daemon Chariots. But first, some Samurai! This is a Ronin unit, and the figures are from Pendraken. I included my Samurai cavalry in some of the photos. (If you are inspired to do so, please vote for my Samurai Cavalry on the Pendraken website. I didn't win or place in any of the categories, but voting is open until March 14th for the People's Choice. Thanks!)

I think I've got the F-stop and lighting figured out. These photos are much less washed out than what I've posted previously:
I'm trying to talk my beautiful and wise wife into letting me buy a proper macro lens. But we have to put a new roof on our house, so the budget will get a lot tighter. We found out that out roof has no underlayment, which means that if water backs up on the roof at all, it will leak into the house. Which is did a lot of this winter due to all the snow that fell here in New Hampshire. Oh, and the shingles were put on incorrectly. So this make 3 things that the building inspector did not find when he inspected the house before we bought it only 3 years ago.
Azrael, you once suggested flying chariots drawn by Bhyakhees. Bear in mind that I am not quite done as you look upon these pictures.
This first group was done with the thought that flying Bhyakhees would be pulling the chariot through the air. Here they are, minus the Bhyakhees:
I figure that Cthulhu daemons would not build something as a chariot. They would just pervert some lifeform that happened to be handy. Hence the chariots are bloated fish/amphibians. I sculpted some 10mm cultists to go on the chariots. Here is the first test figure on the back of one:
The cultist didn't come out too bad or too well. I needed figures that would be more dynamic on the backs of these creatures. Here are some more Cultist Charioteers. One is wielding a long spear/pike/lance. The other chap is driving the creature. I just haven't decided if I am going to put reins in his hands, so he has no hands at the moment.

I like these follow-on sculpts much better. Here is a shot of yet another pose, in progress. The completed figure has the spear pointing up. This might be logical if he was walking on the ground. But when his victims are below him, the spear needs to point down. When finished, this second figure will have the spear pointing down, ready to kill whatever the creature misses:

For those of you that are interested: Yes, those are corks from 25 ounce bottles of Unibrouque beer. They are both from bottles of Maudite. Fitting, no? ;)
Anyway, you can see that I created an armature for these sculpts. Very handy! Now I don't have to worry about my sculpt getting to be too tall! The armature lets me pose the figure before I start. I also found that the first layer of putty needs to be very stiff when cured, so green stuff won't do for the first layer. This is my preference only, others most likely have their own way of doing it. Anyway, I need the firmness that milliput gets me because the armature wire is very thin. Without the milliput, the figure would be bending every time I tries to add more putty.
Thanks to my brother-in-law for sending me putty for my Christmas gift!
As I was getting ready to photograph the first set of chariots, I realized that I wanted bigger creatures for the chariot. I had done some sketches months ago, trying to figure out what I was going for. Suddenly I realized what I wanted to do. These are the next set of chariots, which I like much better. Please let me know what you think. Of course, thsi second group is not finished, they are only roughed out. However, I think you can see what the differences are from the first group. I still need to add the teeth and then add details to the sides and backs. But I think these new creatures can easily have two charioteers on them, and possibly as many as three. Here they are:
And a shot with a rider:
Anyway, that's what I have for now. I have a few days before I head over to Karlsruhe Germany for Euro GT. I hope to see some of you there!
-
Did you slip some apes in your samurai infantry? or just my imagination?
good job!
-
Great looking Samurai there BlackEd. The red banners with white writing looks brilliant, very eye catching.
Did you slip some apes in your samurai infantry? or just my imagination?
That's exactly what i was going to say as well ;D
-
Yes, there are some apes there! ;)
-
WOW THIS IS SOOO IMPRESSIVE!! :o
Me and my boyfriend are just starting up our own WM armies, he has known about for quite a while but I'm relatively new to the whole system.
I'm gonna do Daemons and he is gonna do the Araby.
This has given us such inspiration! Colours, what to use etc.
Can't wait to recieve my stuff through the post!
Can't wait to see what else you have in store for us :D
Han.
-
HannahFKW: Thanks for the compliments! In case you haven't seen it, here is a link to my thread in the Tale of Warmaster painters:
http://www.tacticalwargames.net/sg/forum/index.php?topic=988.0
It might give you some additional ideas for your daemons!
-
Looking good! I really like those ronin. Great sculpts and great colors. Are you going to sculpt a Lone Wolf and Cub to use as a Hero?
Man, I might be just about done with my Orcs & Goblins when you finish your Nippon army. Sounds like a match! Heh heh.
Do you do a lot of sculpting? It really looks like it. Do you take commissions?
-
@BlackEd
Have you seen Mansions of Madness.
Some of those minis may be of use as either models or inspiration for yor daemon army ;)
-
Yes, I saw Mansions of Madness! It looks interesting. My first thought on seeing was to wonder which miniatures I could use for warmaster!
Ed
-
The models are great.
As is the game ;D
-
Time for more pictures! I've got another unit ready for my Nippon army, as well as some more photos of Daemons.
First up, Tzeentch Overlord:
Next, some Tzeentch heroes. The hero in the purple flames is the White Champion. The hero in yellow white flames is the Golden Champion.
Now for a Slaanesh greater daemon. This is a converted Reaper miniature. I changed the weapon and removed the metal breast covers to give her a human torso. I am thinking about adding tattoos to her skin, but not yet sure what I want them to look like.
Here ais a unit for my Nippon army. Here is a unit of Temple Dogs. These are Reaper Giant Foo Doogs. I had to build up the bases a bit to cover the thickness of the miniature's base. I went for a simple paint scheme on these.
I hope you like what you see!
-
Graymatterblues: Yes, I take commissions. What would you like to have sculpted?
-
Cool work.
I love the gold hero as well as the foo dogs.
-
Hoorak for the 10mil nipplepainters !! 8)
Dont bother with toos! give her some piercings !
Ed, the Temple dogs are those we discussed in Kahrlsruhe ?? did you consider our other area of discussion ??
-
10mm nipple-painters? I hope this is a good thing. Looking at the pictures, her nipples seem too dark. No piercings, at least for now. She's already been converted enough. I will see if I can track down a 'before' picture so you can see what I did to convert her to this form. I did briefly toy with the idea of giving her multiple sets of breasts.
Of course, she is bigger than 10mm herself, so I'm not sure that I have earned my place in the ranks of the 10mm nipple painters.
All the Slaanesh characters that I will use are 28mm miniatures, and will have bare breasts. For some reason, an army of daemonically beautiful nearly naked women appeals to me.
The Temple Dogs are converted from Reaper. No, they are not the sculpts I had in mind when we talked in Karlsruhe. I realized recently that Temple Dogs only have 2 attack dice, so these temple dogs look a bit big. I still like the idea of one male, one female, and a stand of puppies. The dogs pictures above are all male. If I had taken a shot of their rear you would see that the sculptor endowed them with unmistakably male bits.
What was the other area of discussion? I remember we talked about Tengu, but am not sure if that's what you are referring to.
-
I was really fired up to do sculpting when I was in Germany. After being back for a week, I felt like crawling under a rock. I will start sculpting again next week, but when Real Life (TM) gets this bad I mostly paint, read or play computer games.
Summary of the past three weeks: Roofer still not done with the new roof on the house. Cost of new roof: $36K. Septic system failed at second house. (Yes, I own two houses. I am renting the other one out. If anyone would like to buy a house within 30 minutes of the New Hampshire sea coast in the USA, please contact me.) To fix that will cost between $11K and $14K. Work sucks, as we were understaffed and now two more people have quit, make us even more understaffed. My work computer was hit with a virus. I have 5 different customers who want me to work on their problem *right now*. I have strategic projects that I haven't been able to make progress on. And then my boss asks me, "So, what are you working on?"
In a week or two the weather will get warm and beautiful, and will want to spend quality time with my Kayak. The good news is that my wife will also want to spend some quality time with her kayak. So at least we can actually spend time together. In a related vein, I would love to kayak down the Rhine river. has anyone done this?
Back to sculpting, I want to finish the sculpts I have started, especially the chariots. And once I get the crewmen done, doing Tengu, Oni and Imps ought to be a snap.
Oh, wait. Lex, do you mean the hounds? Yes I thought about it, and even have some ideas of how to pull it off, at least for ones sculpted/made by hand. But no experiments yet. Watch this space.
-

Sounds familiar

Not down the Rhine, no..... in places that might be a tad risky with the high amount of commercial trafic.
There is plenty of goof kayaking on the various tributaries of both the Rhine and the Maas (Meuse), and I did some sea-kayaking of the belgium and dutch coast when I was younger.... 8)

Where we discussed sculpting some of the nasty bits and using transparant resin with those inserted............
-
I love what I see
-
Excellent the Foo dogs look great I hadn't realised the Reaper minis would fit on a Warmaster base. I ended up selling most of my own Nippon stuff as the Kallistra stuff was just too out of scale I must look at Pendraken again.
Your Daemons continue to impress you really go the extra mile with details like the flames on the base.
Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the Tengu these presented me with the biggest challenge think I still have the conversion bits in box somewhere. BOFA eagle wings are great for tengu but it all depends how you envisage your tengu a suppose.
-
Here is the unconverted figure: http://www.reapermini.com/FigureFinder#detail/60010 or http://www.reapermini.com/OnlineStore/Xanesha
You can see that I had to twist her to face over the end of her tail, so she would fit onto a Warmaster base. I redid her torso so that it looked closer to human. And I modified the weapon.
DaveC: Thanks for the compliments! The Reaper Foo Dogs don't quite fit on a Warmaster base, but it is close. I trimmed down the sides and then it works. The base is pretty thick, so the whole unit is pretty far off the ground. I might end up sculpting new ones, ones that are are more suite to a monster throwing 2 attack dice.
I am going to go with a winged swordsman type figure, possibly a spearman. Lex pointed out that tradional Tengu are just forest goblins that had the ability to teleport inside a forest. But I like the idea of winged birdmen for Tengu.
All: Thanks for letting me vent. It has been a stressful few weeks, especially after such a nice time in Germany!
Back to Slaanesh characters: When you say piercing, do you mean nipple piercings? I have to admit to being tempted to do one with pierced nipples and a chain between nipples. I could do pierced skin with bits of bone and hooks stuck through. As a matter of fact, I have a Slaanesh dragon that I started converting, but gave up on it when I reached the part about sculpting on breasts. I was also going to sculpt on a penis. The throne for the rider was going to be held on by chains, the ends of which would be hooks through the dragon's flesh. I suppose I could resurrect that project now that my sculpting skills are better.
I just picked up the Grey Knight Codex, and I saw a picture in there of a Grey Knight fighting a Slaanesh greater daemon. The weapon in the daemon's hand was awesome. I think I will have to try to recreate it for one of my Slaanesh characters.
-
As always great work!
For kayaking check out at the river Lahn. It's a very popular and beautiful area. There are also lots of historic castles plus it flows into the Rhein if you want to continue your journey to Lex. :)
-
PM sent.
-
Next up are some additional Slaanesh Overlords/Sorcerers/Heroes. In other words, plenty of bare breasts.
My wife thinks the nipples on the Slaanesh greater daemon are too pink and need some brown in their color.
-
ROFL !!
remember the wife is ALWAYS right !
-
Such a Renaissance woman you have there Ed!
Look forward to all the breasts on my table. :D
-
i have never seen such beautiful custom made units be4....
im a bit speechless...
-
BrutalRage: Thanks! I'm glad my work left you speachless!
It's been a while since my last update. Sorry about that! I'm still working on my entries for the Pendraken painting competition, but it is coming slowly. In addition, I am selling off some old WH40K figures, but I decided to paint them first to see if my painting skills would bring any extra cash. Today I posted a Black Templar Chaplain, a Black Templar squad, and a Grey Knight squad.
Anyway, up for today: I painted up my unit of Tzeentch Chariots, and have a unit of Tzeentch beasts.
First up, the beasts:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0078-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0080-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0079-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0081-1.jpg)
as you can see, these are old style flamers with a bit of flames added on. the beast in the center is a converted malifaux figure. I removed the forward facing hands and sculpted up my own 'flamer-hands' In the end, I don't like him as much as the converted flamers.
Next up: the Tzeentch chariots:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0075-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0077-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0076-1.jpg)
I might have to take new phots of these, as the lightinh does strange things to the flames. But I thought you guys would like a look at them.
-
Having faced those chariots on the field I can safely say they are intimidating! :D
-
Fire is a pain to paint (at least to me :D ) and yours look excellent! Great work!
-
damn those are awesome!
-
I guess we need to create a new special rule for the flamers, to allow them to lay down a wall of flame behind them, counting as blocking LOS and unpassabel terrain, just to make you paint MORE flames/fire !
Not sure what you deem wrong with the photograhy, on this side of the water those look awesome !!
-
Those are brilliant!!! :o The flames really stand out, works very well.
Makes me want to start a daemon army >:( :'( ;D
-
These flames are the very best I have ever seen in a "fire-stuff mini". Congrat !!
can you share how did you did it? did you catch fire your models and then take the pic ;)?
-
I will post a tutorial soon, along with better pictures.
This is more of a news update. I got laid off Friday. I have an 80 hour contract with my company, but I wanted to let folks know I am looking for something more solid now. If anyone knows of a company in needs of a software engineer with skills in C++, C# and Windows CE and handhelds, please let me know via PM.
Despair not my friends, I will land on my feet and always have.
-
Sorry to hear.
Best wishes ofcourse.
Where are you located?
-
These flames are the very best I have ever seen in a "fire-stuff mini". Congrat !!
what he said :P
and im sorry to hear about your job situation, hope u find somethin new soon!
-
Fracas,
I am in New Hampshire in the USA.
I spent the past three and a half years focused on wireless communication between an on-board device and a server. By wireless communication I mean over a wireless modem or using a wifi card. The devices are in trucks, collecting data and transmitting the data back to a central collection point. Because the devices are in trucks, they need to be rugged devices and withstand extreme temperatures. You really wouldn't believe the amount of vibration these things are subject to.
I found that problems can creep in anywhere. The cables can come loose (antennas or power!). The cell carrier can accidentally disable a modem. A cell carrier can provide great signal in an area, but only provide voice service (cell phone) and not data service (what the on-boards use to communicate). Then there are flaws in the code that are revealed by a bizarre chain of events. So the work is endlessly fascinating, ands sometimes frustrating. Making order of the chaos is rewarding for me.
In the last year, I started working with handheld devices. The software on the device provides proof of pickup and proof of delivery. I've worked with the MC70s and Honeywell Dolphins mostly, but I had recently started porting the application to the MC95.
It was a lot of fun. Especially the parts where I solved an issue that had baffled many people before me.
-
OK friends, back to painting and modelling.
Here is the Elder Thing I sculpted up for the Pendraken Sculpting competition. I created two head options for it. One head is larger than the other.
First, the small head:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0043.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0034.jpg)
Next, the larger head:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0039.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0037.jpg)
I made this guy with Pro-Create and greenstuff. I hope you like (in an insane, non-Euclidean sort of way)!
-
outta sheer curiousity, what army is this thing for?
me not knowing all the 10mm armies outside of WM
-
Very cool.
-
woooae! absolute stunning, Elder one.
I like it a lot!
-
BrutalRage: I am working on a 10mm Daemon Army for Warmaster based on the Cthulhu mythos (by HP Lovecraft). I sculpted the Elder Thing up for the Pendraken Sculpting competition in hopes of winning the prize (more 10mm miniatures!), and having some cast up for me. I was thinking that they might be small enough to be the miniatures used for daemon hordes, but in the end I think their size lends tham more to Daemon beasts or possibly daemon flyers.
I still have hopes of sculpting my own figures for the Daemon Hordes. I want to sculpt Deep Ones for that, but right now I am finishing up the figures that I want to use for Cthulhu-style daemon chariots. My hope is to get Pendraken to buy those so I can have enough chariots and crew cast up for me.
-
Brilliant, you're a very talented figure maker ;D
-
Calmacil: Thanks! I appreciate the compliments!
I'm working on some Slaanesh daemon hordes and some Slaanesh cavalry. I have to tell you, the quality of these sculpts are awful. >:(
The Slaanesh mounts (for the cavalry) look great. The demonettes on them look awful. Same with the daemon horde -- the demonettes look awful. In the 28mm scale, the daemonettes are graceful looking and have smooth flowing lines and are well proportioned. The Warmaster ones look blobby, have indistinct lines between some details, and overall look bad.
It is just me, or has anyone else noticed the same? Or am I being too picky?
The other Daemon sculpts look great. These sculpts, well, they don't seem to be up to GW's usual standard.
-
Some new painted stuff. Here is a unit of pikemen:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0028-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0029.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0030-1.jpg)
I had these converted for years, and decided to paint them up to get them off my painting table. I have three more units to paint up. I will put together a Dogs of War army at some point.
Now for a miniature that I hope will get some attention. This is a daemon character for my Slaanesh daemon army.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0001-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0004-1.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0005-1.jpg)
She started as a Reaper figure. I added the claw and the circular base. Each of the daemon characters I work on for Slaanesh will have a different skin tone. I was trying for a darker Indian skin tone on her. I wasn't happy with how the photo came out, but I do not have time tonight to take more pictures, so these will have to do for now.
Enjoy!
-
loving the daemon and always nice to see more DOW armies :)
-
WOOT....
-
Are those Pendraken Pikemen Ed? If so, do you know what packs? There's a few on their site that don't have pictures yet.
-
If I had to guess, I'd say they were GW empire converted with pikes, with crossbowmen for the front ranks (pikes at an angle). That's how the DoW article did it...
-
Great conversion! Ed,
which diameter have the pikes?
-
Very nice. Love that demon figure, she's going to look great as a character.
Good looking pikemen as well. Looks like lots of fiddly work has gone into converting those fellas ;D
-
Thanks guys. Yes, they are converted Empire Halberds. I used brass rod for the pikes. And crossbowmen for the pikes coming down at an angle.
JChaos, I'll have to get you that answer later. I don't remember the diameter.
I converted four units of these years ago, to start a DOW army. The fiddly-ness of the conversions turned me off, but now I am ready to start working on the project again. In addition, I feel no reluctance these days in ordering 10mm pikes from other manufacturers, such as Pendraken.
-
Ditto mate.
I did 4 units and nearly went mad.
I recall using these http://www.oldgloryuk.com/disp_item.php?c=299&oc=3568
But I am tempted to do a stand alone one (it currently shares troops with my empire list).
That would however mean I would have to make some more birdmen to match the new list ;)
-
I also have some tuskas that I converted from Epic scale Squiggoths. I'll either re-do the conversions (I've gotten better at it over the years) or post pictures of what I have.
Azrael, do you have photos of your Birdmen? I could never figure out how to do those conversions.
-
I'll either re-do the conversions (I've gotten better at it over the years)
Haven't we all mate.
I keep toying with selling my high elves, dark elves and lizards and doing them again but it is a very large commitment.
As for pics try these:
http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1756265
A full thread of DOW :)
I used empire crossbowmen, snipped of the base, reposition the legs (carefully), then for the wings I used a very heavy card stock, cut out the required shape, scored the 'struts', bent the card gently, then applied superglue gel down the length of the creases to form a ridge.
Probably not the most elegant solution, but they look ok.
-
Sorry to hear about your being laid off Ed. Is your email the same? I hope things turn around for you quickly.
-
GrayMatterBlues: Thanks. I hope to see you soon. We need to Warmaster!
Well, I did not place or show in the Pendraken Sculpting Competition. However, Pendraken does want to buy my 10mm Elder Thing, and the worm swarms! Yay!
-
Congrats! :)
-
Great News, for you and for everybody here to get access to your supeb sculpting!!!
cool 8)
-
Nice to hear you are getting something out of it.
Shame about the contest though :(
-
Quick update: I have my old job back. So that is good. More news as it comes in.
Next item: I want your input on where to set up a painting thread/blog. Should I start my own blog? If so, is any place better than another? I was thinking about starting a thread in the CoolMiniOrNot forums. Part of the reason for that would be to put my painting in front of more people.
The reason I ask is because I have several 28mm scale projects, and I'd like to find a place to post those pictures. I'm working on some Black Templar vehicles and marines. I'm also working on Lord of the Rings figures. In addition, I might even get back to painting up a fleet or two for Full Thrust.
This summer I sold some of my Black Templar and Grey Knights on EBay. The auctions did OK, but not as much as I wanted to get. I figure that if more poeple could see my work, more folks would bid when it comes time to sell.
Thanks!
-
Congrats on the job
Yes to your own blog to highlight your work and interests
You can always double post here as well
I use blogger because it is free and easy
-
good to hear you are back at work Ed !
-
You're a space gamer too Ed? I have FT but haven't played it. Matt, Chris and I have gamed Starmada AE for awhile now.
I'd second Blogger, it offers quite a bit of customization. Same goes for WordPress. Congrats on the re-employment.
-
Good news on the employment front.
;D
As for blogs, they can be hit or miss depending on how often you update them and who views them, I haven't updated mine in months and the 6 followers over there are livid :-*.
Ebay prices are no indication of quality, value or worth.
As for getting what you want for models, tout them around the forums, if you don't get what you want, leave them in the cupboard and try again later.
I know cash can become paramount in decision making when you are unemployed (I was in a similar situation earlier this year) but giving stuff away is a false economy.
-
OK Warmaster fans! New photos!
First, some photos for Carrington. Here is the first unit of pistoliers, close to being finished. Proof that I am working on these!
Here is a command strip of Knights of the White Wolf. When these bad boys came to me, the banner had snapped off. I cut off part of the pole and replaced it with a brass rod. I also cut away some of the pole from the banner, so that the same brass rod connects the standard bearer with the banner. This repair is strong enough to survived even when users pick up the stand using the banner. Here's what it looks like now:

Now the stuff I've done for me:
Here are the two pike units I've finished:
Here's the new unit on its own. The official name of the unit is 'Blue Boars' but is better known as the 'War Pigs'. I decided that all my Dogs Of War units will have farm animals on their banners and have both formal and informal names. As youmight guess, the informal names will be more 'colorful'. I'm not sure of the name of the first unit pikemen. Maybe the "Dandy Lions" for the informal name. Here's the photo:
Some of you have wanted to see the full mounted Samurai unit. I used the sashimono provided by Pendraken for one stand, and made the rest myself from plastic card, paper clips and superglue.
As an aside, I ordered the rest of what I need for my Warmaster Nippon army. I hope it arrives soon. Um, I mean, soon after I finish painting units for a very intelligent gentleman in CT.
Some new Daemon stuff. Here are two Slaanesh characters that I painted. I grew to like the figures as I painted them. I'm pleased with how they came out, even though the models aren't as sexy as I want them to be.
Here is a greater Daemon of Slaanesh, courtesy of Reaper miniatures. I went for an Indian skin tone on this one as well. I haven't chosen a name for her yet, but she will be 'Mistress of the 13 Curses', referring to the runic curses enscribe on her blades. This was a lot of fun to paint! Her skin tone is a base of Tanned Flesh, with a wash of Flesh Wash and then another wash of Flesh Wash mixed with Black.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0007-2.jpg)(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/Demon%20Army/DSC_0010-4.jpg)
Here is a unit of Slaanesh Daemon cavalry. Love the beasts, hate the riders. I tried for something like real skin tones, but the models just don't support it. I saw Daemonette units on ebay that looked very good, which used a monochromatic paint job. If I do another unit of these, I will try that idea. I put nipples on them, but it wasn't worth the effort.

I will post more pictures as I complete units or characters. You will see more pistoliers and Knights of the WW next. I know I promised a flame tutorial, and I will get to that in the next week or so.
Thanks all!
-
The greater demon is especially lovely
-
Thanks! I think she came out pretty well.
I finished a unit of Pistoliers for Carrington and am now deep into painting the Knights of the White Wolf. I expect to have those done over the weekend. Then one more unit of Pistoliers.
I also started on a unit of Slaanesh Daemonettes. I hope to finish them soon.
I am anxiously awaiting my order from Pendraken. Then I can kick the effort to get the Nippon army done into high gear.
-
Those pistoliers are very, very nice! Looking forward to seeing them 'in the... paint?'
-
Thanks Carrington! I will have to take a few more pictures soon. Those pistoliers are based. The Knights of the White Wolf will get based tonight. Then just one more unit of Pistoliers!
-
Some completed units:
Pistoliers:

A second unit of Pistoliers:

Daemonettes:

Ashigaru Spears (for Nippon):

The two units of Pistoliers and the unit of Knights of the White Wolf are for Carrington. It took longer than I thought, mostly because I took my time and focused on the work. I still want to flock the bases, then seal and dull cote the miniatures.
The Daemonettes look OK in this monochrome color scheme. I threw in some gold and purple loin cloths to provide hints of color. The banner is crude and garish, as befitting Slaanesh.
The Ashigaru are the next unit finished for Nippon. Yay! I got them painted in two days. The models are from Pendraken. I think they look good enough for the table top. I used Space Wolf Grey, Enchanted blue mixed with a dash of white, and Regal Blue. The skin is Vallejo Bronze Flesh. Then I used a black wash for lines and shading. The wash is made from black ink and a Future floor polish medium. The technique is fast, and the wash brings out the details for almost no effort.
I hope you like what you see!
In other news, I picked up DreadFleet on Saturday. On Saturday afternoon my four year old son "helped" me put together 4 of the ships. On Sunday morning, my daughter helped me put together 4 more, and then she came back and did one on her own. The detail on the models is amazing!
I am trying to talk myself out of buying a second set. There are so many interesting bits that can be re-purposed to Warmaster scale. The islands with the skulls are awesome, and will end up on a Tomb-Kings-themed table or perhaps a Vampire-Counts-themed table. The dragons are great, and the elementals on the Araby ship, especially the fire elemental, are gorgeous.
I started reading the rules. It is probably a simple game. I'll let you know after I read the rules and give them a try.
-
Looking good Ed! I like the contrast on that first unit of pistoleers.
I picked up Dreadfleet too and agree, the models are ridiculously detailed. My set was actually missing a sprue however (I got two of another instead) so I'm currently seeing what GW's going to do for me.
-
Very nice!!! I know I need to get back to you on flocking the bases for those guys, but they look great.
-
I am working on a Nippon army for Warmaster. (See the Trial Armies list.) There are two entries that are giving me pause.
The first is Temple Imps. Are temple imps simply smaller Oni, or are they based on the kappa, the water imps, of japanese folklore? I'm looking for some visual references, and am having a hard time coming up with much. I see Goblin tiles, and I might use those as inspiration for a sculpt.
The next one is the entry for fanatic monks. Are these the Ikko Ikki? Or are they the warrior minks that are simply going to battle without any armor (which is to say wearing only their robes)?
I had thought of using Chaos Beastmen for the Temple Imps. With some judicious snipping, the axe can be converted into a sword shape. These guys are 6mm tall, which would also visually re-inforce the idea that the imps are small magical creatures.
I am also trying out Pendraken gnomes, which have oversized heads and are shorter than 10mm, in the role of temple imps.
Let me know what your thoughts are on imps and fanatic monks!
-
Not to make to much of a typo, but the idea of warrior minks sounds cool.

It's been a while! Real life has a way of postponing the important things in life, like gaming!
I picked up a model of the Half Moon, the ship Hendric Hudson used when exploring North America looking for the northwest passage. I gave it to my wife for Mother's Day, and had it painted in time for her birthday (November)! It is a simple model, so I painted it to be much more complicated. Take a look:

This is the color scheme used on the full-sized replica that is on the Hudson river in Albany, New York. Note that all the work is free hand. Some of you that are more sane might have used masking tape or even decals.
Next up are some more Ashigaru for the Nippon army that I am slowly working on.
I posted pictures of these guys before, but in this photo they look more complete:

I like a lot the look of your ashigarus, also the bright colors gives them a very japan style!

Looking good Ed. I picked up some AIM Samurai stuff a few months ago. There's also talk of it being put back into production via a contract caster.

My first update here in a while. I've been busy getting a house ready to put on the market. If anyone wants to buy a house in Lee, NH then please send me a PM.
So of you might have seen Capt. Piett's Pump Wagon. If you have, I have a pleasant surprise for you. I made a mold of one of the wagons and have cast up 4 copies so far. Here are some pictures:

I made the mold for resin casting. The first test cast had problems, so I experimented with using epoxy putty as the casting material. What you are seeing is 5 minute epoxy putty. I also tried Elmer's Damaged wood Expoxy putty, which is very nice to work with but has a very long cure time. I think I fixed some problems with the mold (for casting with liquid resin) -- I added a few more air vents and found I was missing at least one "feeder" from the sprue to the mold cavity. I haven't had time to try again with the resin.
I plan to get to casting up the other Pump Wagon that Capt. Piett put together. Before I do that, I want to get a vacuum chamber because the "new and improved" RTV from Alumilite has many more air bubbles in it than the old un-improved RTV.
Up next: You may remember the Daemon Engine of Khorne:
I've been working on this:
I wanted a smaller version of the Daemon Engine so that I could easily fit one on a base. In the end, I think what I sculpted is close in size to the original. So I might try again to make this a bit smaller still.
There are some pictures of painted Nippon and Tomb Kings units, but that will wait for the next post.
-
The engine of khorne is super! great work. Also great paint, those runes are full of power.
-
I will echo everyone here and state that your work is simply awesome!
-
Y'know, you should try sculpting up some Empire Greatswords! (hint, hint) :)
Dave
-
Oh wow - stunning sculpt stuff - I LOVE seeing things like this for small scales. = )
-
Thanks guys for all the compliments!
Dave W -- Yes, I am contemplating Great Swords. It'll be a while though. I want to finish my Daemon Engine. Then I want to do a Slaaneshi Daemon Beast (you'll like her, she's got breasts), a WarSphinx (to replace the Bone Giant or Sphinx), and a Lizardman Celestial Engine of the Dieties.
Right now I'm working on a vacuum chamber so that I can suck the air bubbles out of my RTV. My molds lately have had large air bubbles in them, which is frustrating! I will also try an experiment with reducing the amount of catalyst in the RTV so that the RTV cures more slowly.
Pictures later. I've got one new Undead unit and 3 new Nippon Units.
-
A vacuum pump and a vacuum chamber:
The vacuum pump is a car tire inflator. I put it inside an acrylic canister. I added a tire valve so the pump can pump air out of the canister. The second acrylic canister is the vacuum chamber.
I ran the pump for a few minutes -- it does suck air in. This weekend I will test the pump with the vacuum chamber.
My RTV molds have had big air bubbles in them. I'm hoping this device will suck the air right out of the RTV. I also plan on using a bit less catalyst. My guess is that I have been adding more than necessary, and that the RTV cures before any air bubbles can leave.
The only downside to this set up is that I do not have a vacuum pressure gauge, so I have no way to measure how well this set up works.
I also want to test this set up for getting air bubbles out of resin casting as well.
-
+1 for idea and execution !!
-
Great work.
Always nice to see new sculpts:)
-
I am absolutely intrigued here. I know very little about casting, great to see progress like this...
-
I tried out the vacuum pump and chamber this weekend. The suction created in the vacuum chamber is enough to make it impossible to open the lid! I snipped off one end of the hose to let the air back in.
Realizing I needed a release valve, I drilled another hole in the vacuum chamber, and covered the new hole with a piece of tape. Then, to amuse my 5 yr old son, I put a partially inflated ballon into the vacuum chamber. It was fun to watch the ballon expand!
Then came the real test. Would it suck the air out of the RTV? I mixed up a batch of RTV, then placed it in the vacuum chamber and started the pump. I didn't time how long I let the pump run (which at this point is the only measure I would have as to how much air was pumped out). The results were not as dramtic as I saw on You Tube -- maybe because of the slower rate at which a vacuum was created, or even because I did not get anywhere close to a perfect vacuum. However, I saw many bubbles appear and pop over several minutes.
Now I could watch the RTV bubble all day, but the pot life is 20 minutes. After that, the RTV is too set-up to move. So I poured the RTV. It was noticeably thicker now, and I was getting concerned that I waited too long. In the end, it seemed that there were only small air bubbles left in the RTV.
I would have put the mold into the vacuum chamber but I put the frame on a tray that was too big for the chamber. When I pour the second half, I will pour and then put the mold in the vacuum chamber. This will allow the RTV to bubble all it wants while it cures.
Some notes:
I switched from using ounces to grams, as my digital scale can do either. I made really sure that I have one-tenth weight of catalyst to weight of RTV. The RTV seemed to cure just as fast as when I measured in ounces. I may have to switch to another RTV, one with a longer pot life so that I can de-gas the RTV thoroughly.
I will post pictures tonight.
-
Here are some pictures of the balloon test that I did. First, the partially inflate balloon. Note that when the canister is unlatched, the lid is slightly open:
After running the pump for a minute or so:
I unlatched the cover of the chamber, but the vacuum held the lid down:
So there you have it friends. One last picture:
I was very excited. My son kept insisting that the release valve was so that we could let the vacuum out, and not, as I tried to explain, to let air in.
Here's a picture that proves he's my son:
Thanks!
-
Hee, you getting him to basecoat your Dreadfleet islands, there? =)
-
Stormwind: Yeah, he's basecoating the Dreadfleet set for me. It's what he wanted to do. So I didn't argue! I did teach him how to do drybrushing. He isn't too bad at it.
The big news is that I finally had success in casting up copies of Capt Piett's pump wagons! I've got 2 sprues of the goblin powered pump wagons and 3 sprues of the squig powered pump wagons! I will post pictures tonight.
-
Here's a picture of the sprues I've cast for the pump wagons:
As you can see, all the parts of the model were cast! As it turns out, I had to widen the channels that carried the resin. I also widened the air vents. As a result, itis much easier to get the resin into the mold.
I use a syringe to inject resin into the mold. Previous to these attempts, there was resistance in getting the resin into the mold. Some resin leaked out of the bottom of the mold. Now the resin flows much more easily, and there is no resin leaking out of the bottom of the mold.
For this set of castings, I heated up my molds to 150 degrees F. Prior to heating, I lightly coated the mold faces with silicone oil. One the second (and third) castings, I used talcum powder. I think all this helped reduce the amount of air bubbles in the cast parts.
I also found a new way to hold the two halves of the mold together. I use two sets of wooden sticks (one stick on each side of the mold), with rubber bands providing the force to clamp the mold shut. I use one set near the bottom of the mold, and the second set near the top. This works very well, but I want to replace the rubber bands with screws and wingnuts to make it easier to use the clamps.
I found that I can cast the wagons with the tan resin, which is a bit stiffer when it is cured.
I suppose the next thing to do is to assemble one or two of these wagons to show you all the finished result.
Some notes for those of you who might want to try some resin casting. Here are some things that do not work too well: First, overheating the molds is bad. Any trapped air bubbles will expand because of the heat. Second, vacuuming resin can be problematic, and here's why: The vacuum causes those trapped air bubbles to expand. If the resin isn't completely liquid, the air bubbles will be trapped in their huge form. Third (and last), if you have to bake the casting in the mold, make sure that you wait until the resin has cured. Something about heat making the air bubbles expand.
The other thing I did for these casting was that I mixed 1/4 ounce of the A&B together to get 1/2 ounce of resin. I think that smaller quantities than this make it hard to stay within the resin's tolerance of the ideal 1:1 ratio of the A to B.
-
Really interesting Black Ed. Congratulations for casting resin. Do you know the chemical name of the resin you are using?
and how rigid is the figure casted? can you bend it a little bit if the thickness is low? or it is totally rigid?
Great men! Thanks for sharing
-
I will have to find out the chemical name of the resins involved.
The tan resin is stiffer than the white resin. The finished product is like a plastic miniature -- some very slight "give" or "bend" before you break or bend the piece permanently.
The white resin is more bendable -- it flexes more than the tan. For some reason, I just like the look of the tan resin better than the white resin. I have other casting in white resin, and the thinner parts (swords) bend more than I would like.
-
Nice - can't wait to see them assembled!
-
IIRC you can add some painting powder to the resin - just check the site of manufacturer.
To decrease the number of baubles - I usually put the mould with resin (vacuumated) in hermetically closed pot under the air pressure that I make with car-pump - 2,5-3 Bars is enough - for the whole time of curing.
-
Bel -- Do you mean that you vaccum the resin before you inject it into the mold? How much time do you have before the resin starts to cure? I've got 90 seconds with the tan resin and 180 seconds with the white resin, which isn't a lot of time. I do want to try pressure casting -- I can re-use the car pump that I'm using for the vaccuum. Thanks for your comments! I was hoping I could get some advice from other people who have tried casting!
-
hmmm... I use a resin that stays liquid in 5-7 minutes before it starts to cure. Nevertheless the speed of work must be high. In general, you may miss the vaccuumisation stage - smooth-cast urethane plastic is low-viscosity and the most of air bubbles go out in the mixing process.
_____
But I have never get a casting absolutely free of bubbles (some little ones are always stay in) :)
-
I checked the Alumilite website -- the resins I am using are urethane resins.
Bel -- Thanks for the response. I am looking at a resin with a 5-7 minute working life once I finish off the resins that I have. I also work on getting a pressure chamber put together. Awesome!
-
Bel -- what do you use for your pressure chamber? Buying one new is pricey, somwhere around $300 USD. I've been toying with the idea that I could use a pressure cooker, but I wouldn't want the thing to explode when I run it up to 3 bars ( 42 PSI or so).
Another update:
The Alumilite white resin is curing properly. I've baked the castings for 5 minutes or so after the resin has cured, and now the white resin has all the properties that I like in the tan resin. In its favor, the white resin has a longer time before it starts to set.
I will post pictures tonight of the first few Pump Wagons made from the resin castings.

yeah. old soviet quality 4mm thick metal pressure cooking pot. 3 Bars is a maximum I pressurized , usually 2-2,5 is enough. some guys from casting forums advice to use painting pots for airbrush - it holds 5 and more Bars, more safe.
-
Bel-- Thanks! I was reading the pressure cookers here in the US are safe up to 2 bars only. I've read that before 1970, the pressure cookers could go higher. However, the thought of metal flying around at high speed makes me a bit uneasy. I appreciate the advice.

You may notice the whip wiedling goblins at the back of two of the Pump Wagons. I put on some spare goblins I had to show that these wagons are in scale. I also put the white pump wagon on a base so you can see that they fit on a base.
I will want to try pressure casting, as I can see that there are still air bubbles in these.
In other news, I finished the runes on my version of the Daemon Engine of Khorne. I am now much closer to getting this done. I also sculpted alternate "hands" -- cleavers. If not pictures tomorrow then I'll post pictures of the Daemon Engine next week.
Would anybody be interested in a Lizardman Engine of the Gods in 10mm?
-
These are all excellent.
I would be interested in seeing anything and everything you put together! :)
-
They are so cute! =D
-
It looks like the clay color holds the detail better than the white. Two different materials or just a different consistency?
Way to go making your own mold system... shit, now you could take over the world!!! 8)
-
TIP: One of the pump wagons was cast using epoxy putty. That's probably what you are looking at. The white resin holds just as much detail as the tan.
I'm casting a few of these for an interested buyer who contacted me. Does anyone else want some? The cost is $4 USD per wagon, minus crew. I can assemble the wagon for $5 USD per wagon.
Email me @ enelson at ieee dot org if interested. Or a PM.
-
Excellent quality. Now if you start cranking out batches of Hamerers or something like Greatswords you could make millions. Muhahahah.
From me at least lol. 8)
-
Chris: Thanks! Um, do you have millions? :-\
Is anyone else watching the Reaper KickStarter project? So far I'm in for $180, and am getting over 200 miniatures.
Anyway, I thought I'd mention it because I used some of Reaper miniatures for my Cthulu Daemon army.
-
Yeah Im watching it as well, and I am also in with way too much money. :)
Your casts look excellent, looking forward to see more. Cant really use an engine of the gods but if it looks cool then why not? :) Wouldnt that be a great opportunity to make some Ogre test units. (Just thinking loud here :D )
-
Chris: Thanks! Um, do you have millions? :-\
Maybe ::)
I'd gladly loan out some rares for you whip up in your magic machine. ;D
-
Those new fangled 3D printers are looking increasingly attractive at these prices......
For personal use only though!!!

AT LAST!! IT'S HERE!!
Behold, the Great Daemon Engine of Khorne, Mark II:

With optional hands:

With a "battle buddy":
As you can see, he's a little taller that the original Daemon Engine of Khorne. I hope that after casting up the first piece that I can figure out how to lower him down a bit.
Now I am off to DragonCon in Atlanta GA here in the USA. Yay!
-
Magnificient evil engine, love the paintjob!
-
yes, great painting!
-
The raised rune marks look great Ed. Have you cast these up?
-
Remarkable modeling
-
Amazing! Did you make a mold??
-
Thanks guys! I'm making a mold now. I've got everything broken apart. In the process of removing the arms, I damaged the carapace and took the time to repair the damage.
My main concern is that the runes on the carapace will require a pressure chamber to get right. But I will make the mold and see what happens when I cast.
I decided that for this one, I would make some masters from which I would make additional molds. If I have only 1 mold, it will take a long time to cast up all the orders that were placed for this guy.
I've sketched out a Lizarman Engine of the High Ones (gods maybe?). Anyone have a good name that I can use that won't offend any persons?
I've also sketched out a decent Tomb Kings War Sphinx. War Ushabti, maybe?
-
Tell you what... if you send me a few I'll paint one up, take some photos for your "store" and send the display figure back to you. How's that sound?
-
The official name is "Engine of the Gods", so what about "Engine of the frogs"? :D
-
new sphinx, sounds good.
Engine of the High Ones sounds good :)
-
Interesting! Let us know about the sphink an dino progress.. :)
A good name could be "Engine of the Elder Ones" ?
-
LOL... +1 for "Engine of the Frogs" ;D
A war mammoth for Chaos Marauders would be sweet!
However, I would buy an Engine of the Frogs if you produce one, as well as the Sphinx and Ushabti.
keep up your excellent work.
I don't think the runes would be a problem if you take your time and make sure you get a good covering e.g. a 'layered' approach as you pour the molding material and you try to remove as many bubbles as your pour the first layer by brushing/poking the material into all the nooks and crannies. Then pour your remaining material into the mold.
-
The runes look beautiful man.
And yeah, I love the sound of any Norse suggestions ha ha.
-
I second the war mammoth for chaos! Based on the forgeworld warhammer mammoth?
Lovely scuplting - very top shelf!
Dave
-
BigRed -- That's an awesome idea! I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it, it seems like the obvious choice. I had been dithering before pouring the first half of the mold, wondering about how to position the carapce, and wondering if I needed a 3 part mold (for the 'mouth'/'eye' area). + 1 for this!
Let's see....
Engine of the Frogs...
Engine of the Acients....
Enigne of the High Ones...
Answer:
Engine of the High Ancient Frog Gods! ;D
But Engine of the Frogs is shorter. :)
-
A quick note: Last night I set up the molds differently. This involved taking eveything out of the clay and making new mold boxes -- but that's why I use Legos. The carapace with the runes will have its own mold. Likewise the feet/legs. Arms, hands and waist will have their own mold also.
I and I poured the first half of the molds this morning. Tonight I might be able to pour the second half.
I am excited to have a seperate mold for the carapace because I've decided to make a number of those. This way I can have a number of carapaces in process while I cast up the easier parts.
It takes a while to make a mold. Taking the mold boxes apart and taking the items out of the clay, putting them back into the clay and making new mold boxes took over an hour. Flipping the molds over and removing the clay will also take a while -- another hour or so.
-
Hey great news,
Do you use clay or silicone?
-
Jcahos: For the mold, I use RTV Silicone. Currently I'm using the QuickSet silicone by Alumilite.
When I make a two part mold, the first thing I need to do is embed the piece about half way into a medium that will hold the piece in place while the silicone sets. The "clay" I use for this is an artificial blue clay that came with my casting kit. What it is really made of I can't guess.
-
In the past, I've used simple plasticine or play dough.... Not sure what it may be called in other countries... It the stuff that kids play with, along with certain adults!! ;)
-
I'm in the process of creating two additional molds for the Daemon Engine. I've cast 7 copies from one mold, and I have to cast at least 12 more to saticfy the current orders. Casting one engine at a time just isn't time-efficient. The two halves of the carapace mold are done. The first half of the leg molds are done. I need to make at least one more mold for the arms/hands/legs.
The first 7 came out beautifully, and did *not* require a small pour into the runes to get them cast without air bubbles.
One of the Pump Wagon molds broke in my hands as I was pulling a piece out. I haven't tried to cast any more from it, so I don't know if it is really finished or not.
-
TheIronPainter: Your mail box is full! I can't PM you!

Wow, long time no posting.
First up: Greater Daemon Engines of Khorne, painted and on bases:
Now a shot of Greater Daemon Engines with Daemon Cavalry of Khorne:
And the cavalry on their own:
The Juggernauts were modified from Epic scale Khorne Juggernauts. The legs are sculpted onto the beastie. From the waist up, the rider is a GW Bloodletter, 10mm scale.
I've also been working on my Nippon army. Here are 4 more units:
Two units of Samurai Cavalry, 1 unit of Ashigaru, and 1 unit of Samurai on foot.
I'm really excited by the yellow cavalry unit, and here's why: They have custom bases! I created a base with hollows which have the same shape and depth of the cavalry bases! Once the figures are painted, I glued them into the resin base. They fit perfectly, and the tops of the bases were level! Then I flocked the bases. I saved soooooooo much time! And it was soooooo easy!
I'm planning on making similar bases for the infantry as well. Maybe I'll have to post a picture of the base itself so you can see what I mean. I will even do the same for the GW figures.
I am slowly working on the Engine of the Frogs. I'm hoping for a presure chamber for Christmas. If I get one, I'll be able to cast up more Daemon Engines (in case anyone else would like 1 or 3), and I'll be able to cast up the Engine of the Frogs.
-
very nice bloodcrushers
-
The demons are great. Also the samurais, you are getting a excellent army of Nippon.
-
LOVE the bloodcrushers!
-
Thanks guys! I want to get better pictures of all these -- but because of all holiday related events, my wife and I have been stealing the camera from each other.
I'm hoping for a pressure chamber for Christmas. Please, Santa, I've been (mostly) good! :o
-
My inbox is good to go BlackEd, fire away 8)
-
Santa provided me with a skirt for Christmas. Don't judge me! It's a skirt to wear when I'm in the kayak. It's worn around the waist, and is connected to the rim of the kayak. It prevents water from coming in the kayak, especially useful when you have your kayak out in the ocean. However, I already had a skirt for my kayak, so...
I was able to trade the skirt for a pressure tank! I bought an air compressor to go with it. So, in a roundabout way, my wishes did come true! I need to buy some additional pieces -- regulator, filter, shutoff valve -- but soon I'll be able to cast in the pressure tank.
I was using up some resin that was getting cloudy, which I think means it is going/has gone bad. I cast up one copy of the dinosaur, and there were a ton of air bubbles, all in the ends of the spikes. I can post a picture tonight. What this means is that I have an excellent test mold to use for casting in the pressure chamber.
-
For fittings all I use is two Ts, a release, a pressure gauge and a quick connector. Shouldn't cost you more than $15-20. You can get the Ts, guage and quick connectors at a DIY store and the pressure guage on eBay for cheap.
-
I've got the new pressure tank set up. I did a couple of tests with the new rig, fixed a few air leaks, and now am ready to test. No pictures of the new set-up today though. Sorry!
Here is a new Samurai cavalry unit. The unit is mounted on my new stands. I took these pictures so you can see how the miniatures fit into the stands. No fuss! Just glue the figure into place and go on to the next one.
I was so excited about the cavalry stands that I made some stands for infantry as well. I'm almost done with an Ashigaru unit, the only thing left is the basing. Here are some shots of the new infantry stands and one figure in one stand. You'll see cavalry stands also, with one horseman in one of the slots.

I can barely wait to finish the Ashigaru unit, but alas, other things need to get done this weekend. I decided to start teaching again. I need to get ready for a college course I'm teaching, Object Oriented Analysis and Design. However, I will do at least one test casting with the new pressure system this weekend.
-
Two posts in one day!
I tried casting using the new pressure tank. Incredible! The casting came out almost perfect! Below are photos of the ankylosaur that will be carrying the Engine of the Frogs. The tan was cast without the pressure tank, the white was cast with the pressure tank.
As you can see the spikes on the ankylosaur came out on the white version, the one cast under pressure. Yippee!
I also cast up a set of arms for the Greater Daemons. They also came out without air bubbles! This is awesome!
And here is a picture of the Ashigaru getting glued into the infantry bases that I cast up.
I will be creating similar bases for the Warmaster strips when I get back to painting GW figures. Is anyone out there interested in these bases?
-
Matt has asked that I paint up one of the Goblin Pump Wagons that I cast. I'm still owrking on painting the crew. But here is the wagon itself, equipped with a brightly colored, psychedlic mushroom.

And here's a Mystic for my Samurai army:
-
That looks like one of those poison mushrooms from Mario. Who's the mystic from? Pendraken?
-
Yes, it is a Pendraken figure.
-
Hi Ed,
Fantastic work!!!
Nothing more to say....b :)
Cheers,
Jürgen

Wow, too long between postings.
I have the Samurai army mostly done -- just some bases to flock. Unfortunately, the pictures I took last night came out WAY too dark. However, I do have a few photo's to share.
CaptPiet created the model of the Goblin Pump Wagon. I created a mold, cast one up, and have now finished painting this one:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Warmaster%20January%202012%20Event/DSC_0021_zps549400fd.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Warmaster%20January%202012%20Event/DSC_0021_zps549400fd.jpg.html)

I'll post the photos of the Samurai army once I get better pictures.
-
That is pretty cool, looking forward to see your samurai army complete!
-
Hi folks! I have some pictures to share today!
Here's some shots of the entire Samurai army. I might need to make a few extra characters. Right now I have the Samurai Ape with banner bearer, Samurai Ape on the back of a Fu Dog, and a Samurai on foot with two Foo Dogs rampant as guardians. I've also got a Mystic and a Sorcerer done. The general you've seen before.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0005-5_zps817636bd.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0005-5_zps817636bd.jpg.html)
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0006-8_zps5df68751.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0006-8_zps5df68751.jpg.html)
General with some Ashigaru units. There are 9 Ashigaru units in this army. You can see some of the characters along the cliff edge also:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0009-8_zps4e04cd09.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0009-8_zps4e04cd09.jpg.html)
This army has four units of Samurai on foot, and four units on horseback. So the breakpoint of this army is 4.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0010-5_zps169b4667.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0010-5_zps169b4667.jpg.html)
There are three units of Ronin in this army. Nice to have when you need the 'Expert Swordsmen' ability, but are certain the unit won't survive:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0011-7_zpsb4cd5f5f.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0011-7_zpsb4cd5f5f.jpg.html)
Another shot of the center of the army:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0012-6_zps4fcba457.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0012-6_zps4fcba457.jpg.html)
Three commanders out front trying to get the Ronin to move. The hero on the blue base is standing on a casting of a Chinese coin that has a dragon on it. It's supposed to be a tiled floor. (How a tiled floor gets to the battlefield remains a mystery. But I thought it would look cool.) The hero is flanked by two Foo Dogs rampant.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0013-5_zpsc7e42b6b.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0013-5_zpsc7e42b6b.jpg.html)
A close-up shot of the General. The Mystic is on the right, the Sorcerer on the left. A Samurai hero can have one of five different retinues, and no retinue can be chosen twice in the same army. I have the Army Builder files for the Nippon army if any of you use Army Builder. Anyway, the Mystic is an Elf Wizard from Pendraken. The fire is my sculpting. The Sorcerer started as an Empire Wizard. I took the skulls off the staff and sceptre. I added a jar to the base that is supposed to have fog creeping out the top of it.
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0014-3_zpsd9bb6064.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Black%20Templar/Warmaster/DSC_0014-3_zpsd9bb6064.jpg.html)
I hope you enjoy the photos!
Ed
-
Really nice army. Congratulations!
the General Vignette is wonderful :)
-
Excellent. The use of Foo Dogs (Reaper?) is genius.
Where are the Vimto monks? (Veeery old 1st ed warhammer joke)
Dave
-
That is a great and plenty of colour army. Congrat, really nice!
-
Thanks for all the kind words. There's something like 22 painted units here. I decided that each unit would have its own color scheme to show that the army is made up of units from different houses.
The Samurai have back banners, and the ronnin do not.
The army is done, but I still want to create more units for the army. Now I can play wil a completely painted army.
What's left: Dragonne mount, Abbot (monk general), Imps, Oni, Foo Dogs (sculpt is started), paint up some monk units, sculpt fanatic monks. I didn't list all the retinues possible, or any of the Ancestries.
David -- what is the joke about the Vimto monk? I'm looking for any information so I can model one!
The good news, my friends, is this: I can cast my own miniatures now! So if I sculpt it, I can cast it. Which means that I can then sell it.
-
And if you can sell it.... count on me for buying... ;)
-
Aaaaah - Vimto monks were a joke that very early warhammer afficionados may remember. The background fluff on Cathay mentioned a martial arts order of monks that were in the Shogun's army. They wore purple robes. There is a famous brand of ribena like blackberry children's cordial drink in the Uk called Vimto. Hence the Vimto monks!
Later editions of warhammer dropped all reference to cathay and so vimto monks have been lost in the mists of time...... Until now!
Purple Sohei? :)
Dave

Phenominal!!

No Warmaster stuff at this point, but I wanted to post some other items I was working on in December.
I made and cast these climbing holds for my wife:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Casting/IMG_0220_zpsa201b3a3.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Casting/IMG_0220_zpsa201b3a3.jpg.html)
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Casting/IMG_0219_zps8f3f50e0.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Casting/IMG_0219_zps8f3f50e0.jpg.html)
The blue is blue resin. The white of the eye is white resin. The eyelids are a fleshtone resin. It took a damn long time to cast this, because I had to cast a color, wait for the resin the cure, then cast the next color. It was fun to do, though!
Here's another climbing hold:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Casting/IMG_0218_zpsd49e119e.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Casting/IMG_0218_zpsd49e119e.jpg.html)
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Casting/IMG_0217_zpsebfee8d2.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Casting/IMG_0217_zpsebfee8d2.jpg.html)
I used some fossils that I picked up during my trip to the UK in November. I used some resin-safe clay to hold the fossils together while the silicone mold material cured. The mold required three different pours of silicone before it was done. The granite coloring is due to an additive. I love the look. I plan on making myself one or two of these to use as terrain pieces for Warmaster.
For my mother-in-law, I used some relationship jui-jitsu to make a gift she had to love. Here it is:
(http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p435/BlackTemplarDad/Casting/IMG_0216_zpsccc7c2d0.jpg) (http://s346.photobucket.com/user/BlackTemplarDad/media/Casting/IMG_0216_zpsccc7c2d0.jpg.html)
These are castings of my children's hands in resin. The castings are mounted on a pre-made canvas. The picture frame is store bought. Grandma loved the gift. Score one for me.
The real fun came from trying to get the castings of the kids hands. I bought skin-safe silicone rubber, then had to find a way for them to rest their hands in the mold box while the RTV cured -- aproximately 25 minutes. I learned some cool things, such as: six year olds can't focus for 25 minutes.
Anyway, I'm making a casting of the hands for my aunt who will love the finished result.
I've mostly been casting using SmoothOn's 305 resin. I'm mostly happy with the 305, but I wanted to try a resin that cures harder. So I bought a batch of the Task 2 resin. It has a longer cure time but sets much harder. Overall, the I don't like the Task 2 resin as much -- some of the mixed batches never set properly, and some remained sticky even after waiting multiple hours past the nominal cure time. The Task2 resin is really hard though -- I had to use a Dremel tool to grind (and I do mean grind) off the sharp edges of the hands.
On the painting table, I finished painting a unit of Lizardman Saurus. I'm not really happy with it, but it is done. The yellow didn't come out the way I wanted. I'm still working on the bases -- I want it to look more jungle-esque.

I started a unit of pikemen for the Dogs of War:

In one of the above photos, you will see [redacted]. My lovely wife sculpted those for a project she started, and I cast up several copies. The circles are for the Engine of the Frogs. Each circle is its own piece.
I cleaned up the painting area this weekend, and it looks so much better!
Merry Christmas all! Happy New Year!
-
Thanks for the update! What nice personal projects. =)
-
The pikemen look cool!
Thanks for sharing.

Can I just say - I would love ammonite type giant fossil hills / obstacles as a kind of Araby / Ulthuan coastal thing?
In the wonderful Total Annihilation: Kingdoms there were shorelines made of giant ammonite fossils.
-
Nice things here... I hope we will see definitive versions of everything here.
-
The pikemen are coming along slowly. Other projects are in the way.
I'm casting up some "1st Book" pins for the NH section of the Romance Writers of America. I'm in pretty good with the current president. OK, the current president is my wife. By marriage is one way to network, right?
I'm also collaborating with Elaine (same lovely spouse) to put together an entry in the contest for making the Hugo Award bases for 2014. (The Hugo awards are the top award in the science fiction genre, and are given out at the World Science Fiction Convention each year.) This year they will be held in the UK. (Yes, I am going.) Anyway, doing all the planning and test-casting has eaten away most of my hobby time. If we win, I'll be casting up 36 bases. Which would be awesome!
I hope to get our entry for the Hugo Award bases done next weekend. after that I can finish painting the pikemen and get back to sculpting the Engine of the Frogs. For the Engine, I'm taking the time to make the pin-and-hole arrangement for the various parts so it will be easy to assemble. I'll take some pictures later to show you the its current state.
-
Oh wow, that's an honour! Can't wait to see your Hugos.
-
Great work with the pikes! Must be really time consuming... how do you make the tips? Just by squeezing the end of the wire with pliers?
-
Hey, that's a good idea. Squeeze the tip, file to shape.
Well, the loose figures you see with the photos are from Pendraken. They are cast with the points on the pikes.
On the pikemen I made by converting Halberdiers, I glued a bit of brass rod in place where the figure was holding the halberd. The tips on those are blunt, and I just paint the tips mithril silver.
-
Squeeze the tip
That's Matt's motto!
Just saw all the Samurai pics Ed, they look great.
-
I had to delete a photo from the above. Sorry! I was told that I can't post any pictures of the Hugo award base. So if you saw the photo, please wipe it from you mind. At the very least, please do not post any copies of the photo anyway (if you kept a copy). The contest rules for the Hugo awards base state that no pictures of the prototypes can be posted in a public forum before the Hugo awards ceremony (if your base gets picked, that is). If we don't get picked, I can post pictures once we know we are out of the running.
The good news is that I am DONE, FINALLY DONE, with casting up prototypes for the Hugo Award base. I've learned a lot about resin casting in the process.
I spent the whole of 5 minutes working on the pikemen this morning. It felt good to slop some paint around. I can't wait to finish the unit!
-
OK, it has been too long, but I've finished the Pikemen unit that I started in an earlier post.

The placing of the figures makes the most sense when viewed in column. Hope you like it!
-
And the general aspect is really great. Movement is impressive.
If you create a second unit like that, you could pose them already nested and ready to receive the charge. With several lines of spearheads before the first pikemen line.
-
Excellent posing!
-
Here are some bases that I made. I raised the edges up so the edges of the strips blended in:

Now an update on the Engine of the Frogs. I am getting close on this one. I need to add one more ankle fetter, possibly more supporting logs, ropes (to tie down the platform onto the beast) and (of all things) toenails. Oh yes, and I want to add a skink shaman 'floating' above the front of the platform. Note that the rings will be cast individually so they can be positioned any crazy way you want. The rings were made as individual pieces. It took some doing to get perfectly round hoops that would fit tightly inside each other.

It's taking so long because of work pressure, work for the IEEE, teaching (adjunct at SNHU) and casting projects for my lovely spouse and others. I hope to clear away some of these extra projects soon!
Please let me know what you think of the Engine. Thanks!
-
Oh wow! It's looking interesting!
-
the bases idea is really good!
if only you could sell those to us :) ...
-
THink he might be persuaded to do so ..... I bought some of his castings (and Dave's) last november
-
Yes, friends, I will be casting these up to sell.
One lucky person in Canada has ordered the first one and has been patiently waiting (for too long) for me to finish this project.
-
I'd be really interested in the Engine of the Frogs. I'm a big fan of the hoops-spinning-inside-hoops thing.
Good idea with the bases too.
-
This is a good new :)
-
Bases = Win
Engine of the Frogs = Win
I'm interested in both projects when they're up and running.
-
I will be happy to buy both when you make them available!
keep us posted!
-
Intrigued by the base
Will there be one for archers?
Engine is awesome and I'd be interested in one
-
Fracas, there will be 2 bases for archers.
The first base will hold 4 archer-type strips on a base.
The second will hold 5 archer-type strips on a base. There are some troops that come on archer-type strips, one example being Elite Halberdiers. Some folks like to have these bases more crowded so they blend in better with other infantry.
-
This is awesome
I am now painting lizardmen but I have HE and Skaven yet to paint
I always mount my archers 5 wide and the Skaven will need to be five wide as well
When will you be able to sell the bases?
-
Doing some calculations, I will be ready to sell around the third week in March.
How many would you need?
-
really depends on the price
-
same here. Depends on the price.
keep us posted though!
-
I could be interested too, depending on price, as the others.
-
Hi BlackEd,
I am interested in the engine of the Frog, and any new cast you made recently. Keep the excellent work.
note:
I am editing WM Digest, if you need a space to show your figures or something (or could I help you with the e-paper in any way you consider, write me to jchaos79@yahoo.es)
-
JChaos, thanks! I will get in touch.
Well, friends, I have bad news to report. The Hugo-Award-Base Contest entry that we sent to Chicago on January 13,2014 was returned, undelivered, on March 3, 2014. If you believe the tracking number, the package never left the Bedford NH post office, except to be delivered to us. A 'helpful' postal worker put an "Insufficient Address" sticker over the address. I used to have faith in the USPS. This was a major blow.
-
Damn... A post office error or was the adress uncomplete ?
Come on, you ARE doing great job, anyway. You will find people wanting to help and buy your stuff. Go on !
-
Marell -- I believe it to be a post office error. But because the "Insufficient Address" label was over the top of the address, I can't tell if the address was complete or not. We tried peeling the "Insufficient Address" label off, but it also peels the paper off the address label.
Thanks for the kind words. It is a disappointment, for sure.
This weekend I will take a crack at putting together the Archer's bases. If I like what I get, I'll post some pictures!
-
BlackEd, what exactly do you all make and do? is there a list somewhere?
-
BlackEd if you are still around reveal yourself! you need to sell us things :)
-
Hey guys! Still here -- just not checking the boards as often as I used to. Merkalis, what kind of stuff do you want me to sell to you? 8)
-
Hello Black Ed,
I now it's post necromancy but i have a question. I'm working on your Engine of the frogs. I'd like extra info on how you mounted them, etc.
Some bits around the circles do not seem to go anywhere and they are fragile. Are they casting flashes or something else... If you're not too far away, please drop me a mail or answer here.

And I want to know who this chap is!?

I'd better give up on that one.
I'm looking for a multi-armed Kali demon possibly with a snake's body for my kingdoms of Ind army. No success so far.

I think reaper had some beautiful models

In my opinion (without having the figure) it could fit well as a giant/demi god for WM - I suppouse it will as WM daemon princes figures aprox

Thank you sir!!!!

There was a discussion of Indus lists recently

Suggested this mini as a possible fit

Slightly more Indus-style?
