Where are the gamers?
« on: March 11, 2010, 01:45:05 PM »
Hi

Haven't had a game in years, despite having couple armies of over 12,000 pts each, (Eldar, Imp Guard), excluding Titans. Just wondering where all the other gamers are? (I live Gloucester, UK).

At this rate I'll have to convert over to FWC (and I don't hold much hope for that either.......)   :(

Here's hoping.........

Have you searched the Players' Index?  http://www.tacticalwargames.net/archive/cgi/players.cgi?action=search

Or you could post in the EPIC section of Warseer: http://www.warseer.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=95

And once the TacComm forums are back up, you should be even more likely to find some one.

Good luck!

There's a healthy group in Bristol if you don't mind driving down to them.

Well I'm in London, and would be happy for someone to come to our club on a Wednesday night to reintroduce me to Epic. I seem to have about 2-3k of EA SM's, mostly from my old Space Wolf Great Company. EA is on my 'to do list', as to when I'll get around to putting a new army together though is anyone's guess...

Paul H, I think most of the UK epic crowd can be found on the warseer forums. May be best to head over there and say hello.

I keep meaning to come over to Stomm's club as I live in the area (Muswell Hill) but I've just been massively busy lately. I'll try my best to make time for it next week.

It would be great to see some other Specialist Games players at the club. Currently there are just two or three of us really, or at least two that primarily play a Specialist game (Warmaster in our instance) rather than the likes of Warhammer or 40K. There is plenty of 'residual interest' in Epic though, as most of us are in our early 30's and remember the days when Epic was the 3rd 'core game' and still have armies laying around from that era.

I would however be very much up for an 'Epic Drive' (as in several club members learning EA and putting together new armies), perhaps during the summer holidays or something...

There are a tonne of epic players who go to the Cock Tavern in Euston (NW1 1HB) on Tuesday nights.

If you like you could pop down and introduce yourself one night. Possibly you might be able to convince some to visit your Finchley club from time to time.

The reason I set up, or to be more accurate found a new home for the club is that I just can't get into town on a week-night. I'm at home with the kids whilst the wife works silly and unpredictable hours in Canary Wharf. So even to get to my own club before 7:30pm I have to pay a babysitter to look after the kids for three hours so that I can get myself out of the house by about 6-ish.

So, most likely for the next ten years or so if I'm going to get any wargaming done, it has to be close to home as even when I do go back to work I'll need to be close to home so that I don't end up in bed at a silly hour. And besides, there are two decent pubs on the walk home from the club if I finish my game early ;D

Anyway that's my story so to speak, but if I can I may just try popping down to one or more of the central London clubs. Obviously not to poach members, that's just naughty, but getting some inter-club gaming or event organisation sorted out would be pretty cool. For starters I've got some pretty big venues lined up that would work really, really well for a Specialist Games gaming weekend. We'd need at least sixty attendees to make it financially viable though, so having several systems running at the same time would probably sort that, or tacking it onto a WH or 40K event.

You'll probably want to tack onto  WH40k/WHFB

GW held a Specialist Games weekend at Warhamer world back in 2008

16 or so players from around the country turned up for Epic
8 or so players for Warmaster
and 2 players for Mordheim!

By contrast:

1st company veterans hold a by annual event at WH world for 40K, WHFB, Epic and Bloodbowl
The next one is at the end of May

The 60 or so 40k slots and 30 WHFB slots have sold at already. The 40k slots sold out in just a few days.
11 of 18 tickets for Epic have sold so far.
Bloodbowl doesn't seem to have sold any yet!

... if that's any indication

BTW, there's an Epic tournament in London, being held at the aforementioned place in Euston, on the 1st May. With a 'friendlier' event being held the next day... if you're interested. See http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/london.shtml

I'd love to go to one or both of the London Epic events in May. However I don't have an army that I can really use in any sort of event setting (my 'current' Epic army is my old Space Marine era army, consisting of a battered pair of Warhounds, a Space Wolf Great Company, two 'flying brick' Thunderhawks and a few other bits and bobs), nor have I even played an intro game of EA as of yet. Believe me when I say that sorting out an army and getting some games in is definately on my 'to-do list'. Unfortunately finishing my WM and WMA armies, and getting 1.5-2k painted for WH and 40K are higher priorities, the later two because I want to be able to play games, and if the only game I can get one week is WH or 40K its better than playing nothing...

As to SG event uptakes, poor turnouts are a result of a lack of interest from GW as much as anything else. Ultimately the numbers of people that play our beloved games tends towards contraction rather than expansion, simply because its not being pushed in the stores or properly supported. And whilst there are obviously die-hard fans like ourselves that will go to whatever they can, they can be taken out of the event scene as I have pretty much for the last four years or so for various reasons.

So anyway, yes to ensure that a SG related event can actually go ahead really you need the likes of WH or 40K 'to make up the numbers' so to speak. I'm surprised about the lack of BB takeup though, I'd always thought that it was the one SG that was the exception in that regard?

There are lots of independent BB events, both one and two days held all over the UK throughout the year.

BB at open war used to be popular but last time OW ran there wasn't BB as they ran a league final instead. That may have put people off.
