phoenix guard

At the moment I'm painting a unit of high elf phoenix guard and was wondering what the box-like square thing under the right arm is supposed to be? You can see it from behind in the right arm pit.  ???

I took it to be a belt pouch.  Before there were pockets, you might make a pouch you could hang from your belt to carry small items in.  Alternately, it could also be a ceremonial knot for the belt around the waist.

For what it is worth, I went with the belt pouch interpretation.

I think I'll also take it for a pouch. It was just hanging so high that made me wonder. Thanks.

Hard to tell, but I would guess its the ceremonial knot for the belt as the spearmen have similar bits on them.
But I think its small enough to really be any of the 2, so it makes little difference. :)

I took a look at the spearmen and saw the belt knot. Very good hint inspector Guthwine.  :) But since I didn't paint the belt on the front side (thought it's plate armour) I'll just leave it gold like the armour or if I'm bored paint it as a pouch.
