Trouble deciding on a basing/game system!!
« on: June 05, 2011, 12:04:45 PM »
As the failed participant of at least one "tale of ..." challenge and far too many 28 mm army projects, I realize my gaming needs direction.  I have decided to focus on 10 mm.

Here's the problem; I love Warmaster command rules, hate the magic/archery rules, prefer WMA and simply cannot abide the base size.

I started basing my 10's individually after reading the Blacksmith's exploits with WHAA, I looked into Two Hour Wargames rules for myself, but I really don't like D6's unless 12+ are being rolled.  My basing system is infantry on 13 mm steel washers, ogre/troll/Minotaur sized monstrous infantry on 20 mm, Cavalry on 22 mm, large monsters on 25 mm - 38 mm.  These are all round washers.

I think I will be using sabots (40 x 40) and playing a hybrid of WMA / Battlelore rules.  I have also been toying with Impetus.

My question is has anyone else found the base size in WM too restrictive, especially for infantry and what have you done about it?  Also how would you address the issue of playing Warmaster proper?

Sacrelidge!!!

Seriously, Warmaster isn't perfect (what rules set is?) but all systems have their ups and downs.
As I see it you have two options - go for another 'off the shelf' rule book and possibly find flaws with that e.g. (Hail Ceasar is good but we find morale checks are far too random and can see a third of your army vanish in two turns once heavy combat is joined)

Or write you own?

I play in a medium sized group and consensus is important, if you do too, get agreement before you put lots of energy into a system that the others do not want to play.

I tend to agree that the 40x20 bases are a bit cramped for 10mm figures.  One thing I've done is mount Cavalry brigades on 60x40 bases, on the assumption that they tend to stay in a standard formation anyway. The games I've played this has worked pretty well, especially because 6-7 cavalry figures in a wedge look perfectly nice on the base, leaving the rest to fill out two 20x40 bases in the event of losses.

I posted pics of my 60x40 basing about a year back -- to a fairly mixed reception on the boards here... but by all means take a look.

NB, Impetus and Impetus fantasy is based 120x60 for 28mm figs, 60x40 for 10 and 6mm figs, so these be a nice transition.
