How many points do you normally field?
« on: July 27, 2011, 06:25:06 PM »
I'm always trying to get one of my opponents to have bigger games.  :D He has a 5,000 pnt army, but he likes 2k games.

I was wondering what everyones "average" size game is for warmaster, which do you play the most.

Mine is 2k

I used to play with 1500 points.

Sometimes I field 2000 or 2500 for us these are large games and we need to have time, that is not always possible.

We use to play a bit slow

We tend to play 4K per side with 2 players on each side (that is a total of 8K and 4 players) for "normal" games.
We occasionally play 5 or 6K a side but these always go on to 2 or 3 evenings.

For my 40th game in November we are planning 8K of Orcs and Goblins on one side vs 4K of Dwarves and 4K of Araby on the other side - all painted.

I have a blackberry with a camera now so I hope to be able to post a load of pictures.

We prefer the larger games as it brings out the true glory of the scale and the rules. Smaller games can literally be won or lost on one crucial command roll in my experience. (still a good game though even at 2K a side)

Wow!!  :o  that's an epic battle, i'm jealous.  ;D We're planning 6k a side with 4 players ....3k Dark Elves (me) and 3k Chaos v's 3k High Elves and 3k Brets.

Yeah i agree, i love big battles. Please take photos of your battle, i'd love to see it  ;D

How big is the table that you use for the 8k games? and how many hours does it usually take?

My table is 8ft by 4ft. I could possibly extend it to 10ft x 4ft.
Biggest game we've had is a big multi player game of wh at whworld. Think it was 6 players each side (we put together about eight 6ft x 4ft tables)

2k but have been known to play 3k.
I would love to play a full weekend with around 20k per side (4 x 5k) with 2 armies per side.
But time and space prevent this for now.

Standard games around here are 2000-2500 pts.

I experienced some big battles already with about 8000 pts each side and 3-4 players. Most of them seemed to evoke some "magical time shifts". Means that after some hours of playing the one flank tends to be one or even two turns ahead the other. This results in rather strange battles ;D

I guess not THAT strange, if you look at eg. Waterloo, you will see that similar things happen there (even without playing any rules   ;D   )

I have a 9 foot by 6 foot table in my converted garage and can leave stuff set up so big games aren't a problem.
We can play a 4K per side game in a long evening (say between 8:00 and 12:00)

Often people will have already dropped off their forces and army lists at mine beforehand so we can already have set the table up ready to deploy quickly and start on time.

With bigger games we have found you need a "caller" (like in large old school Dungeons and Dragons games) who declares when one phase has finished (like magic or moveemnt) and when the next phase begins. We also use a turn tracker to prevent the 'timewarp' problem.

My dream would be to play a 20K a side game on somewhere like a car showroom floor (everyone would have to take their shoes off!) over a week. If everyone in our group paints everything they have that would actually be possible....

2k, always.
Tends to take at min 3hrs.
Max, well, i´m embaressed to say, 6.5hrs. ;D

In WFB we had a big bash at the club some years back, 14k/side, 7 players aside, 7x6/4´ tables, not so interesting in my opinion.
For some reason all "heavy shooters" on the good side pointed their black powder inventions towards a big daemon..
My BT.
Not so fun to be out of "where it happens" in turn 2.  :-[
(bad judgement in choosing list may be another reason...)

That's why (in my humble opinion) Warmaster gives a better game than WHFB. Its hard to get a really imbalanced (either extremely weak or extremely strong) army selection where you set up and think "I've already lost this before the first die is rolled!"

Of course in Warmaster some armies are slightly better than others but there doesn't seem to be the same "rock, paper scissors" problem that WHFB has with some army combinations.

The bigger the game the less pronounced the random factor is too. In WHFB the bigger the game the more problemmatical the game can become as you see 5 greater demons, a battery of 10 great cannons etc etc that completely dominates (ruins) the game.

Of course I still enjoy the odd game of WHFB but Warmaster is better.
