Raid to the Oracle
« on: August 15, 2012, 07:34:54 PM »
We decide to play the scenario in warmaster nº1. Undead troops try to reach imperial side to the table in order to slain a mage called The Oracle.

I have to say that the scenario is not well design. The author says that he imagine the imperial forces fighting desperatly for his lives, and well, the scenario gets completely the opposite feelling. Also the Undead army doesn't seems a good choice if the simulation is a army shooting and pulling back more distance as usual, because skellies brigaded can not confuse and will not be pulled back.

The whole terrain are in the side of empire (a hill and a wall of forest and ruins). They shooting distance is doble, and have an advantage to retreat the enemy. Gain VP if they manage to destroy a completly unit by shooting.

By the other side, the undead player could win if they manage to reach with one unit the imperial side of the table (the game is played in long side of the table) before turn 5, and well....we all now how radius have the undead characters. So it is not very probable to do this.
Also gain PV for each unit to reach the imperial side in the turn 5 to 8. If this happens, believe me, this PV are not necessary becasue the game is yours.

The imperial side have a wall of forest and ruins so this unable the chariots and cavalry. Also have a hill very close to his deployed when the artillery can reach the whole battlefield.
The author recommend no to use artillery for the undead becasue they have to move the whole table to reach the imperial army, and also recommend to the imperial side to not use the WarAltar because the background of the game.

We decide to give a try to the scenario because was published in warmaster magazine. We made some modifications, imperial handgunners and Xbow reduce to 60cm the shooting to 40cm. Also ignore the extra to pull back more distance.

Because we are running a campaign (using the WMArmies rules) undead player could deploy a flanking force. This allow to use artillery in this scenario.

We also include as a playtest the homerule of the Road. Each unit starting touching the road, moving in column and finishing with one base touching the road will benefit of +1 to command. We feel great with this homerule, and we recommend it.

We have a great time playing, and we enjoy the game. I was commanding the undead and this scenario was a great challenge becasue was not balanced. I decide to bet for the use of magic (not very reliable in warmaster) artillery and have my carrions and few cavalry as a punch. I have in the first clash of combat a horrible error when I win with my infantry a charge and decide to pursuit. Then I was defeat and give a chance to halberdiers to advance to my artillery, loosing one piece of my strategy. The fury of battle makes you made this mistakes :)

Edmund, bet for shooting troops and a magician to attack. He played very well, as always. And have a great and well earned victory.

Scenario recommended as a challange, not for beginers because one side can feel not very balance.

Let's go with the picture report, hope you enjoy it

Looking good. It's rare you see a game where the Empire Halberdiers aren't just "speed bumps" for the opposition!

You could just give the Undead an extra 1 or 2 K of points if you feel the scenario is unbalanced?
Thanks for sharing

Yes, we should have increased the TK points.

Our house rules for the road worked well, and we liked them, so we will continue using and play-testing them in future scenarios. :)

Ha ha yeah, that is a great idea!! I should work on "spells-effects" figures.

I remember a battle with Edmund, involving khemris... can't remember who was leading the undead... the point is that we take some shots using a little point lighter to represent death bolt ray, it was fun. The bright light confuse the camara shot and we get some wierd, semi blurr pics of magic effects coming out form the hand of the sorcerers and bathing with blue light the objective enemy unit. That was fun.

Let me try to see if I have the pics in my hard disc
