Airship combat rules/games/miniatures/anything?
« on: August 01, 2013, 10:41:18 PM »

Right, first up a fairly simple question:

Does anyone know of any good tabletop Airship combat games?

Somewhat more interesting:

If there isn't anything particularly good out there, would anyone be interested in the creation of a card+miniature based steam/diesel-punk airship combat game? I have some ideas, and I'm wondering if it's worth refining further. If anyone's interested, I'm happy to start thinking aloud on the forums here ^^

Airship as in Rigid Airships or Air Vehicles? The former would be pretty interesting I expect.

I'm thinking more dirigibles, though blimps and balloons aren't ruled out.

I vaguely remember a game a few years back, I think it was a steam punk sort of thing.

But an flight based warmaster mini game would be interesting, done in a similar way to aeronautica imperialis. For races like the empire who lack a flying model you can have some crazy nuln hot air balloon with a hellblaster on it but could be made out of an old galleon or something...this is now putting alot of ideas in my head which I want to build for!

surely you could adapt the BFG rules to this.... after all that's essentially a naval game.... in spaaaaace!

I would have thought naval warfare would be the best place to start

I could adapt BFG to this, but I have lots of ideas that just don't match. This will not be a BFG clone, it will be a game of its own. It also means that should there actually is interest, it can be sold (if GW can try to sue someone for writing a book with "Space Marine" in the title, I'm not taking that risk).

If anyone has played Guns of Icarus, or Guns of Icarus Online, it is one of the heavier inspirations for this game. It is of course not going to be a tabletop port of GoI, because there's lots of things I'd have done differently.

I'm going to leave this thread open for its original purpose of seeing if there's anything on the market, and start "developing" in a different thread. Will link here once OP is written.

Sky galleons of mars seems to be airship based, unsure of the rules though

http://www.brigademodels.co.uk/Aeronef/index.html

The rules are up on Wargames Vault too.

I also put together some rules for Starmada AE to play with Aeronefs (airships):

The Starmada AE demo is here:

http://www.wargamedownloads.com/demo/SAEdemo.pdf

It's hexed based but you can get around that by:
1) measuring to the peg on all stands
2) creating 60 degree firing arc templates
3) allowing turns to be up to 60 degrees, but no more
