pursuit & units leaving the table...
« on: October 09, 2015, 01:13:47 AM »
So, imagine a combat thet is near a table edge and the losing unit is forced to retreat of the table. Does it roll immediately to see if it returns or does it do so once the combat round is done? I would assume that it is done immediatley (as it would be for drive back from missiles) but my opponent argued otherwise :/

Now my thinking is that if it is rolled straight away it could well return and thus still be available for pursuit (even if it returns a considerable distance away along the table edge) but I also feel that there sghould be some pretty serious consequences to being chased off the table and not returning immediately (to my mind that unit has routed and should (at the very least face penalties on further rolls to return) but there is nothing at all about the situation in the rules? What do others think... has it happened to you or is it too rare to bother with a special rule?

We play it as an immediate roll.

If one or more stands in a unit leaves the table edge ........, roll a D6 and then concult the table below...
To me, it clearly means you should roll immediately.

However...
Quote
Units that leave the table as a result of retreating from combat cannot be pursued by their enemy even if they reappear immediately. However, a unit that reappears immediately can potentially be a target for an advance from another combat.
And from the combat section:
Quote
A unit that cannot pursue an enemy because it cannot reestablish contact is not allowed to advance instead. A unit can only advance if all the enemy units it is fighting are destroyed. See Advance p49.

That means that if you push an enemy out of the table during the combat, the unit fighting it cannot pursue or advance. It can only stand ground or fall back.
However, if you have another combat close by and manage to advance with another unit, you still can finish the enemy off.

Hmm, that feels very unsatisfying to me. a Unit driven off the table by missiles or spells is one thing but one driven off in melee combat should not get a free ride... indeed, by the rules it seems that it will often be given a serious advantage for being driven off the table :(
