Advanced terrain rules - artillery on hills?
« on: March 19, 2017, 12:11:23 PM »
Dear community,

In the Warmaster revolution advanced terrain rules there is no mention of artillery counting as being defended on hills. Is this correct or should artillery still count as defended when uphill of the enemy?

Many thanks

Well damn this would totally have changed everything that happened to my galloper guns on Saturday.
Ok maybe it may have made a slight difference in the first game.
Expect that I think it wouldn't have then either.
I didn't do very well.

What's the ruling? I know the rules say machines follow the same terrain rules as chariots (hills &s bridges) and chariots can't claim defended, but is it different for artillery? On the one hand they are big, on the other you expect them to be 'dug in'.

The advanced terrain rules are supposed to be in line with the terrain rules in core rules. These haven't been touched and in are the same as in classic WM.
p. 53

Defended
A stand is defended if it is placed wholly or partially;
behind a low obstacle, such as a hedge or wall; at the
edge of or within a wood; or amongst ruins or
buildings. A stand is also defended if it is positioned
on the crest or upper slope of a hill or rise so that it
occupies higher ground than its attackers.
These are all judged to be situations that confer an
advantage to infantry or to small units of artillery. Such
units can position themselves closely to the lie of the
land, taking advantage of minor folds in the ground,
local vegetation, or barriers such as hedges or ditches.
This advantage is partly due to a unit’s ability to
entrench itself, for individual warriors to find cover, or
for whole units to conceal themselves –for example by
kneeling amongst dense undergrowth. Similarly, it
confers an advantage to a unit that has taken up a
position that is hard or exhausting for an enemy to
approach.

In other words artillery count as defended on the hill if charged or being shot at from lower positions.

Nice one, that is clear... I read that but missed the artillery bit, thought it was just referring to infantry. Great, thanks for the clarification

Pg 53, Col 2, Par 5:
"Cavalry,  chariots  and  machine  and  monster  stands count  as  being  in  the  open  in  all  circumstances.  They never  count  as  being  defended  or  fortified,  even when  they  have  moved  onto  hills,  behind  hedges,  low walls  and  so  forth."

If "artillery" are the same as "machine" as stated above, then this sentence needs altering if your intent is for artillery to count as defended on hills.
I expect you already know this though....

My bad. Artillery and Machines are different. Doh.
