Newb to 10mm enquiry
« on: May 15, 2010, 12:44:16 AM »
Hi All
I'm new to this forum and to Warmaster Fantasy  itself but have been playing lots of different wargames including historical , fantasy and sci fi for over 20 years or so . I  have the WM rulebook and i'm thinking of starting an army although i was thinking for the most part of using  non-GW 10mm figures  .
I have access to hordes of figures from Eureka Miniatures  as i paint  display game  armies for them and get paid in lead.
So i was thinking of a Beastman army in 10mm , Eureka have quite a range there .
My question ** Is it  possible to build a Beastman army from Eureka's range of 10mm figures and only having to buy the odd blister from GW to complete the army ? .
i ask purely as a novice to WM as i havent even opened the book yet but i do know i like the idea of having a massed army on the field even though i have quite a few 28mm armies i think the 10mm stuff would look greatand close in appearance to my 15mm Ancients.
What other armies are possible with using mostly Eureka Miniatures 10mm range ? , i see they have dwarves and Elves as well and a few others i havent seen yet .
Any replies greatly appreciated , cheers Tom

There is not an official beastmen army, though there is a trial army.

The secret, though, is that WM armies are fairly generic, so it wouldn't be too hard to use a range of beastmen as a wholesale proxy for one of the legal armies -- e.g. Kislev requires infantry, archers, knights, horse archers, bears, and a war wagon, as well as various personalities.

I have been building a large beastmen army from eureka for a few months (ill helath has stopped me at the final hurdle).
You can see my efforts here
http://www.sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=1192.0
I have not really used any GW units except for hounds, dragon ogres and spawn.
They are mainly Eureka models.

As for the list not being official most people are happy to accept these lists.
Also if you are just playing with friends where is the harm :)
The rules are located at the bottom of this page.

Hope you get into this area of the hobby and enjoy it as much as most of us do :)

I really would not recommend to begin the game with one of the trial army lists as you might get a wrong view at the Warmaster game (it's not proven yet that the beastmen army really is balanced... no offence meant - azrael ;)). It's better to begin with one of the original armies and maybe step on to the more experimental ones later when you have the grip of the game.

The classical mass armies would be Orcs, Skeletons, newer ones are Lizardmen or Vampires. You can also easily adopt the Empire army list so that you can play hordes of them.

I am not the first address when it comes to advice about alternative minis but I'm very sure that Orcs or Empire is sold by a lot of model-producers out there. And I could imagine that Undead armies can be found out there too. Maybe others know more about that (there's a linke about alternative manufacturers here - I guess you had a look there already?)

Greetings,
Gerald

There is nothing stopping you from using the beastmen models, but then using the Chaos (Warriors) army selector. Indeed, unless I knew well in advance that someone intended to use a 'non-standard' selector, I would at least prefer the option that the army be fielded as a straight Chaos army rather than a Beastmen army. Whenever I have taken the field with my Norse at an event I have always allowed my opponent the option of facing my Empire army instead for example...

If you like the beastmen then start using them as a proxy army, to learn the basic rules. O&G or Chaos can be a good template to use for your proxy set-up

No offence taken.
They are akin to a glass hammer sometimes.
I agree, try some counters to learn with one of the standar armies then use the beasts as a proxy chaos force.
