[GAME] Battle for the skull pass
« on: May 01, 2011, 08:35:05 AM »
The clash was between a 1150 orcs force and 1150 dwarf force. The rocky hills and hills in the center represent the pass.

The goblins brigades took the hills to prepare an ambush with rocks and jabalins. The dwarves advance with caution and when they were at range cannons and thunderers start to fire to the top of the hills

An advance force of dwarves climb the right hills and stated hunting goblings

Meanwhile the tusk raiders advance and stop behind the hills to be safe of the dwarves cannons

Some orcs and goblins counter attacked the dwarves warrior in the right set of hills with the goblins shaman spell of waaagh, and rejected the dwarves

The dwarf army should now move fast run along the pass and attack the orc tribes that guarded the exit of the pass, but they were to slow and the tusk raider charge first hitting the dwarf reserve cannons and thunderers and also attacking the main dwarf body in the flank!

The dwarves took the breakpoint and started to flee. Orc n Goblin victory in the Skull Pass

Another one to write down in the Book of Grudges !!

Did you threat the ground sloping up to the pass as higher ground for troops nearer the "pass" ??

Just goes to show, you need to put your faith in the weapons of your forefathers, cold steel, and not these new fangled innovations.

Gunpowder might be good at causing a pansy dress wearing elf to wet his skirts, but those smelly devices just don't cut it at the battleline.

Thanx for the comments!

@ Lex, not sure of what is your question. We treat the hills as:

-if a unit start its charge in a low level, the defender (in the hill) count as "defended" ( to hit 5,6).
-When a unit took place in the plateau of the hill do not count as charge in open (do not count +1 of charge in open).
-The hill plateau represent a set of hills and difficult ground, so it blocks  visibility (LOS) as being a semispherical caquete. Units situated beyond the imaginary line that divides the hill plateau in two equals parts are out of LOS.
-A stand of a unit (should get contact between the three stands) that is situtated in the slope of the plateau hill count as being in the hill-defended ground. (verbi gratia: In the 8th pic, the goblin stand with the red squig count as defended).
-The side of the hill modeled as rocky gray is impassable and represent a helm

@ Haranin: yes I know, use a weapon that you could see the white of the eye of your oponent!... I played with the dwarf set, and believe it or not I failed two turns and do not manage to make the charge with the infantry brigade. Command 10 could do nothing against the bad luck. Anyway the orc victory was well deserve. He move quite well and take the cavalry charge in the right moment.

The game was small around 1000 points quite quick and very fun!

What I meant is, that the pass (which normally defines the summit of a path) would be the highest point of what "looks like" level ground, but which is actually sloping up from the table edges towards the "line"of the pass.

Iow.

you could consider that units nearer the "line"  of the pass are actually positioned "higher" then those nearer the table edge(s)

I am actually working on two articles on terrain(use). We have been trying several of these  "interpretations"  and I must say that stuff like this also REALY works to make games interesting for infantry.....!!

Other then the basic interpretation of the (footstep of) the terrain, we are playing around with the way that bonuses apply. In a setting like your battle, troops attacking WOULD be gettin the bonus for attacking on "open" ground (~1 att), but the troops higher on the hill would get the defensive bonus, thys the attacker needs 5+ to hit.

Try it and tell me (here or in direct mail) what you think of it !
