[Battle Report]The battle of Schron Grabben
« on: July 31, 2011, 11:21:46 AM »
My last game was a scenario published in warmaster magazine, "the battle of Schron Grabben". Based in a napoleonic battle and converted into fantasy.

The plot was a attack from chaos into the kislev territory. We used 2500 pts chaos army versus 1875 pts empire army.

Empire army deployed in a hill with fortification for the cannons. As the scenario says the hill count as defended but also has a very high slope so the charge running up the hill count as half movement. That makes the chaos has to be very close to iniciate the charge (10cm to infantry, 15 to cavalry).

Chaos will enter in 3 hordes in turn 1, 3 and 5. The game last 10 turns. The game also could be won if chaos manage to take 3 units out of the table by the path beyond the hill (see first picture)

He play 9 and half turns. We only miss the empire phase of the last turn. The battle ended as narrow a victory of chaos (800 puts versus 755pts), but.... if the empire phase of the last turn would be played then the victory could be for empire quite easy.

I am not going to explain the 10 turns only make a summary here and put some pictures.

The chaos had to move the army and decide where to attack. Archaon (chaos general) had to see his troops being repeled from the hill  and defeted for very all his attemps to attack. But in every wave of chaos erode the empire defence a little bit. Just in the last two turns a unit of chaos knights manage to break the arquebusier in one flank of the hill and then the carnage begins, sweeping the artillery and  making a lot of hurt to the empire army.

The empire had to decide well their deployment. The player is defending so has to had patient in the game and wait a lot of turns in a defensive way (this type of battle could be bored to beginers eager to explore the rule sets, in my humble opinion).

My personal impresion:
I played the chaos army, and in turn 7 I had lost a lot units, and makes very little damage to empire, so I start to think that the scenario was quite impossible for the attacker. Empire has a lot of proyectil and the condition of the stepped hill makes a marvellous defense. Chaos army has more points but , need to move the army divided in three groups.  Then in the last two turns, when empire was weaked then I realize/remember how though the chaos could be.   So now I think is scenario is balanced but need to play the 10 turns. I recomended it.

Here it comes the pictures:

the battle field

The empire depolyment:

The first wave, some trolls skirmishers :o

Empire cavalry go down the hill

Second wave of chaos arrive

The powder start to detonate

Last chaos wave enters the battle field

Some hounds of chaos make an attempt to sweep the artillery (the sorcerors try to help with their spells)

Subjective vision of the hero in griffon of the empire

Another failed attempt to sweep the artillery in the hill

Some ogres charge to Xbowmen, and where repelled

Right flank

More furious attacks

Marauders and chariots charge to the right flank!!

Another massive attack, this time in almost all the line of the hill

A group of dark blessed knights manage to break the arquebusiers and flank attack the artillery !! the chaos gods are statisfied

Flagellants reacts and try to erradicate the wicked knights, but they only gets a draw

The knights on the hill charge to the steam metal creature, and get a draw again. Knights still on the hill and the tank crew flee

The last turn pictures are not here, but I will get them in the next days. In this turn, chaos attacks again and destroy xbowmen and arquebusiers, winning a lot of victory points. Game ended but the last phase of empire is not played. In this ommitted phase is expected that empire makes an counter attack and probably destroy some chaos units, getting the victory.... but that is just a what if...

A very fun battle. Time elaplsed aprox 6 hours

Great ! Excellent pictures. I like the vision from the griffin (and the painting job on the griffin too). It shows the general posted behind the canons just see nothing of the battle ! The cotton smoke really add to realism. It's the first time i see an effect like that really well presented.
