As the title asks - if you could go back and place an order this time last year from FW and GW - what would you buy - how much is GW missing out on?

It would have been quite a bit...

but the idea that GW is 'missing out on this money' isn't really right. Things are out of stock now because they've sold the stock they made- they're as happy as they could be when a line runs dry. The only way they could make more money would be to continue production- but if that happened there wouldn't have been the last minute grab there has been, and they'd have had to pay to keep the machines running, probably re-tool the moulds, etc.- The end result being that they would have lost money by keeping the model manufacturing going.

I would have liked some clearer warning about when SGs were going away, but I can also understand why that wasn't announced. SGs are still recruiting more people, and that would have stopped if the end of the model lines had been announced. I also don't think there was a clear 'last production run' or SG end date. Over time fewer and fewer SG game pieces were ordered for casting, then stopped altogether, probably at different times. Then stock runs out unevenly, so no one can fully predict 'the end'.

Although I understand it, I am still very annoyed about the above  :(

Actually they are missing out on money. They NOW do one last cast to order series and rake in the sales. Instead they've missed out on all the possible additional sales. Cynical I know but would work. I know I'm short about 700usd in additional items I'd of purchased in AI\Epic and BFG ranges.

Probably would have picked up a few more BFG fleets. Up to another $1K.

I might have cracked and ordered a large Warmaster Vampire Counts army (4K points).
That'd have been about £600

I'm not going to get them now as there are some troop types missing and I don't trust them to deliver the numbers I'd want so I'd risk being left with a 'lop sided' army. Not willing to be gouged on e bay as I have 6 armies already!

I spent more than I ever have in a month with them in May...... I couldn't have spent more even if I'd wanted to!

If I'd had more funds, I almost certainly would have picked up large Orc, Vampire and dark elf armies for warmaster, several BFG fleets including lots of forgeworld models, and splurged on as much epic stuff as I could.... Lots of revenant titans, reavers, a landing craft, second russ company, steam gargants (how I regret not buying one now.....) and loads of other stuff....

This month, I have spent and traded and aquired a wm dwarf army, warlord and reaver titans, a full set of eldar shts, a large eldar army as a job lot, warlock titan, loads of epic orks..... Probably spent close to £500 which is about two years of hobby budget!

Nothing. Everything I wanted or want I can (and will) get from other suppliers.

Well, as you can see from my Trades post, only about $210 left, having spent a great deal over the years.

This isn't a terrible mistake for them. They're not just getting out of SG-- they're exiting pewter altogether. So we have no idea what constraints they're under. My suspicion, knowing how businesses operate, is that they're doing it this way because that's how they usually do things.

In their position, what I'd have done is made an announcement "last orders this month!" back on May 1 and then only removed the molds from production as they became unusable. This eliminates the problem that David has: that availability concerns prevent someone from buying at all. Then spend June spinning up molds on sold-out stuff that's back-ordered, but stop taking orders on May 31. If they're letting go of staff or cutting off suppliers related to metals production, then that might explain it.

Normally, if I were GW, I'd be worried that money pouring into SG's death throes is cannibalizing my main three product lines; however, the grognards who play SG aren't in their target market to begin with. (That's part of why SG is going away!) Even in these panic-buying conditions, even on a devoted site like this, the traffic is relatively low. That's not a huge customer base, but if they're all willing to blow US$1000 before exiting the hobby (from GW's POV) then why not get whatever you can out of the lines before discontinuing them?

The thing is, people like us aren't GW's target market. They're after the pre-teen and teenage boys out there, with lots of pocket money to spend on, lets be frank, grossly overpriced plastic. Long term gamers are surely just a small part of their customer base.
