[WM] Marienburg Landship
« on: September 23, 2014, 09:29:00 PM »
Was having a discussion with Draccan about Marienburg Landship procurement and construction in Trades & Services.  We got on to stats/points and so thought the discussion would be better here.  Picture of said unit below (WIP).

Main components are an Airfix HMS Bounty stern, a WM Steam Tank, and WHFB wheels.  Then sprinkle with WHFB bitz and WM Empire personnel (including a Dwarf crew).

My preference is always to go for an existing stat line/points wherever possible.  It has a 40 x 60mm base underneath, so my initial thought was same as a Stegadon 10-3|10|4+ (250 points)?

Draccan has suggested upgraded Steam Tank.  Any other ideas out there?

My suggestion:

Marienburg Landship
Steam tank with the following changes:
    Wonder of the Age:
Can only move 15 cm (instead of 20)
Can shoot 40 cm. (instead of 30 cm.)
     +1 hit point.
+10 pts. on top of steam tank.
I really would love to buy some Warmaster Kislev, Araby, Bretonnia, Vampire Counts, Chaos demons ...

I'd probably go for the Stegadon rules.

The Steam Tank idea will still suffer the same problems as a Steam Tank- it won't be easily winning combats, and losing will see it die (regardless of the extra hit). It's best use would be as shooting support- but then you're probably better off with cannons or something else.

I have changed my mind about the Landship rules, as I have created a lumbering behemoth of a ship and the current rules for steam tanks even with twists doesn't cover it.
Stegadon rules are definitely closer, but I think I may twist is just a touch more to accomodate a cannonade on both port and starboard sides in the same turn. Also 15 cm. range is a bit short?

It is called "The Wonder of the Age" after all....

P.S. Thanks Empireaddict for inspiring me to finish my little brig..

I don't really mind what the rules will be because that thing is brilliant! Great idea! :)

What I would do with this unit is one of the following approaches:

Aproach A: It is a boat, so use some modification of Naos and ships rules from the book. I do not read them recently, so I could not be more specific, but I remember the rules were very interesting.

Aproach B: Marienburg landship is a tower with the special hability of moving.
So It is a tower, could be destroy as all the tower with two damage of artillery. It can be assault with ladders or with siege towers. Can hold a unit with the status of fortified... The tower rules.
About the moving I would use the rule of Dog of war phalanx restriction, and limit his movement to 20cm as arillery.
Adds on: could have boiling wax cauldruns (maybe two one of each side of the boat), and maybe could have some cannons like the boat section says it have a ship.

IMHO If I would use in my group that unit I would do not mess with stat lines for a unit like that, as a machine is difficult to measure, and a consensus could be difficult to reach. Also IMHO I think it is needed to clearly split the idea of fluff "the wonder of the age" to the profile stat "a balance unit to have fun in the game as an add on the list and not the central piece of the game (besides you would like an special scenario that this unit will be central piece of the game"

Hope it helps,

Anyway very nice models you both have
