Basing conventions - is there a definitive list?
« on: June 22, 2015, 02:07:30 PM »
Greetings all. As mentioned elsewhere I am re-basing some 6mm for Warmaster. Not having any background in Warmaster and I have run into a couple of unexpected problems.

Infantry (40x20) and cavalry (20x40) basing is straight forward and some exceptions like pikes are mentioned in the lists. By looking at pictures and printed counters I was able to figure out that artillery goes on 20x40 bases, which as a newbie was non-obvious, but then I also found pictures of strips of some sort of elven archers that also look like they are set up for 20x40. Fliers seem to be a bit of a coins toss as well and let's not get into large monsters  :o  I still have no idea how to base tuskers.

Is there a definitive and detailed list of what units and troop types go on what size bases?

Thanks

Hi PatG,

basing in warmaster depends on the type of troop:

- Infantry 40*20 long edge

- Cavalry 20*40 short edge
- Monsters 20*40 short edge
- Artillery 20*40 short edge
- Chariots 20*40 short edge
- Warmachine 20*40 short edge

There are not category as flyers. Fly is a capacity not a type of unit.

Characters and mounts: does not matter the size of the base. Choose a point and always measure distances from this point.

Exceptions of basing are written in the description of the unit. In instnace Harpies are monsters, but a carefully reading of the descriptions shows that they are an exception and must be based with long edge (40*20).

I suggest read the armylist carefully before painting the army.

hope it helps

Jchaos

One minor correction. If characters are on 20x40mm rectangles or 25mm circles you can measure to the edge of the base in either case. Characters based on anything else should measure from a specific point.

It is well worth basing Heroes and Wizards on round bases (small coins are good) as this makes them stand out from the standard rectangular based troops.

But characters can join brigades, how's this done if they're on round bases?

Mainly regarding characters on mounts of course.

Actually they would join a UNIT in a brigade, Just place them next to (in contact with) one of the units in the brigade.

remember that a brigade is just a TERM for a temporary situation at the start of the Commandfase
