Do you count excess wounds in mutiple combat?
« on: September 21, 2015, 01:03:20 PM »
Sorry chaps I'm sure this is a repeated question.

Essentially we had a multiple combat where counting wounds can be vital.

In this multiple combat a unit of orcs achieved 6 unsaved wounds against one of the chaos units involved however the chaos unit only had 3 wounds left.

The Chaos player argues that only 3 wounds count towards the combat resolution, whilst the Orc player felt all 6 should count.

I'm in agreement with the chaos player, only wounds taken count, excess wounds are 'lost' and don't count towards combat resolution.

Is this right?

In order to satisfy both sides I have been going through the rule book but I can't find proof anywhere to justify my opinion.

Can someone please tell me where to look, as I will have to show that evidence to the player before I am believed!

This was a key moment in the game and had we counted the 6 rather than 3 then Chaos would have lost rather than won the combat.

After units have attacked it is time to work out the result. If one side is destroyed then the combat is automatically won by the survivor, otherwise compare the number of hits inflicted by both sides. In cases where a unit has been struck with more hits than it can actually take (for example a unit with a total of nine hits might suffer twelve) then only count actual hits taken. Excess hits are ignored for purposes of working out combat results.

Thanks! My opponent was adamant that such a thing wasn't present in the rules and I couldn't find it at the time.

Doh!
On the combat resolution page.
Which I think of as a summary, so I've only been looking at the rest of the book.  :-[

Thanks, I'm humbled by your help and awed by my stupidity.
