Lion Rampant in 10 mm
« on: September 17, 2015, 02:16:14 PM »
I have enjoyed my forays into Lion Rampant using some old SAGA 28mm models. However having played Warmaster [10mm] and Hail Caesar!/Black Powder in [6mm] I've grown to love the smaller scales and choice.

I decided I'd try looking at playing Lion Rampant in 10mm as it might fit in with Warmaster and there are resources from Pendraken and we might go the Warbands route too, more games for a model size = less paint more play!

Planning

1)  Unit size: Mounted is 6 horse per unit, Foot is 12 men [ Except, Men at arms/Bidowers only 6]
2) As a mounted man takes up the same space as two men then base a unit of 6 horse on same base size as a unit of 12 men.
3) Allow some flexibility of formation, but rather than have the models individually based, base them in smaller groups.
4) As a unit's attacks are reduced to half when half sized then break units up into at least two bases.

Thus I'd suggest

3 horse per base
6 foot per base  [3 men at arms/bidowers per base]

Base size...................   I happened to get 40 x 40 out of box [hand of fate]

So
three horse on a 40 x 40 base,
Six men on a 40 x 40 base -
Both effectively an 80 x 40 unit

Men at arms/Bidowers  These units are half sized so I'd suggest basing 3 men on a 40 x 20 base
Effectively an 80 x 20 or 40 x 40 unit

So from left to right, Men at Arms, Mounted Men at Arms, Foot Yeomen with bow and Bidowers

At this point jaw drops as I look at models

Doh!

Warmaster

So if you all fancy playing a different game on the odd occasion get your warmaster models out and play Lion Rampant.
Or if you fancy the new Warbands game you can buy this from Pendraken here for 50p each, simple conversion for my Lion Rampant or Warmaster, if required blanks can be slotted in where the number of models ain't enough, 2 of 20x20 for example to centre a rear rank of one foot.

100x50mm tray with a 80x40mm internal space, able to hold four 40x20mm bases. (40x20mm bases sold separately)

and get

BTW I don't work for Leon, just love his models.

Interesting.

I already read the rules of lion rampart and could be worth to have a couple of games. The book is well written and scenarios are awesome.

Aslo love the way Mr. Mersey makes the fantasy lists at the end of the book. Basic and with many flavour.

If you play some games do not forget to include some battle report and your comment in this Other Games board!

go on with your 10mm Lion Rampart!

There is (or will be) other game called Dragon Rampart that could fit games with warmaster miniatures.

I like the look of your figures based up for Lion Rampant. I think they look more skirmish game, than the close ranks of WM figures.

Also with the figure density pretty low, you will get units painted up quickly.

But I do like using WM figures for Warband - four stands look really good on the sabot bases.

I was thinking about doing Saga Crescent and Cross in 10mm, using round bases, 25mm for infantry and 40mm for cavalry - about the same size as used for 28mm figures. And putting a few 10mm figures on each base - this way you would have the same base and unit sizes as 28mm, just with more figures. But I do like what you have done with keeping the figure counts the same, and reducing the base size.

Apologies for not posting any battle reports.
However here are some conclusions from playing Lion Rampant in 10mm.

We played with all measurements as cm instead of inches and that works very well.
Playing with 10mm models rather than 28 mm on the traditional 4' square board turns the game from a skirmish one into a more tactical one, suddenly there is space to move around behind the enemy. It was described by one watcher as a small army WM and I knew where the comment was coming from, but for me it had extra flavour.

A smaller table 3' or even 2', would turn the game into instant melee removing the tactical phase.
For some scenarios we felt it important to do this and played on a 3' square table.

Some games went on for 21 turns, but we still manage two games in four hours, the high turn value was more due to failed commands which saw no unit activated by any player over five player turns rather than issues with scale.

All the games have been played with my WM Orks, as this gave me a great stock of models so we could play any of the 24 point armies listed at the back. This rewarded us with a real understanding of a unit's strengths and weakness, something normally limited because of your lack of unit types.

Initially we were totally underwhelmed by Bidowers, but played correctly they can be devastating speed bumps.

The fact that you can only activate the unit once, to move or fire, means you sometimes have to choose between aggression or consolidation.

Beware the isolated unit that can be shot at and charged multiple times in one turn, moving like a ball in a pin ball machine as it retreats its numbers are reduced and when it becomes battered is ineffective.

12 men units are difficult to play and keep once they are down to half strength, achieving a 4+ on 2d6-7 (total lost men (6) +1 being at 1/2 strength) is rarely doable as you need to roll 11+.

Yeah I think that experimenting with battlefield size will be important to figuring out how to get into combat without it being too much of a "dance"

Very interesting conclusions. Thanks for the comments.

I have the game but not my list of priority now. I have heard that there is Dragon Rampant in preparation or something, so if you go for fantasy is a good new.

can you post a list of the one of your games (or a picture) to make me an idea of how it could look an army of Lion-greenskeen Rampant in 10mm?
