Flying Units vs. War Machines
« on: August 29, 2016, 03:17:16 PM »
Greetings,

I am pretty new in warmaster and just began painting my empire army. As I pass over the rules, I begin to think for a machine there is no real protection against flyers. Even cannons have 60cm range and a unit of flyers can charge for 100cm. Also, as I understand from rules and threads in this beatiful forum, cannons and almost all machines must have LoS to enemy to shoot.

No doubt, on table every situation offers a new answer, but am I missing some rule or really flyers hunt machines pretty easily?

Thanks in advance.

A cannon gets to stand and shoot against a charger it has LoS to at anypoint along the charge. Those hits are carried over to the first round of an assault.

A single unit of cannons all on its own is usually taken out by a flying unit for the loss of a stand. Two units of them (or ones that have their flanks protected by troops or bowmen) usually send flyers packing.

Also, the community has been playtesting 60cm flyer charges for awhile now. I'd suggest trying that too.

I would definitely insist on a 60cm charging limit on flyers.  And I say that as someone who always picks Harpies an Eagles in their lists!

Our tournaments still use 100cm for flyers and there does not seem to be a big problem with continuing to use that distance.

When playing Empire, I have found that 2 units of cannons are best protected by 2 units of pistoliers, 1 on either side.  More reliable than Helblasters and they shoot all round.

Not a problem no, but a different take on the game. We've run 60cm charging for years now.
