Criticise my Undead List.
« on: November 09, 2009, 10:33:48 PM »
This is the force I took out on Saturday. I faced Brettonians (Commander, 2 Heroes, 2 Damsels, 2 Grail Knights, 6 Knights, 3 Squires, 4 Men at Arms and 4 archers plus some magic items including a dispel scroll thing).

I took the following:

Tomb King
Liche Priest on Zombie dragon with sword of might
4 Liche Priests

4 Skeleton Warriors
4 Skeleton Archers
3 Chariots (1 with sword of fate)
2 Skeleton cavalry
2 Carrion
Bone Giant
Sphinx
Skullchukka
Bonethrower

2000 point total

This was based on what I had.

I won the game, as I lured one brigade of knights forward with my cavalry. My opponent unwisely committed his general, and while I lost five stands of cavalry, a unit of skeleton warriors and 2 stands of archers, I then swarmed the brigade with 6 units of infantry, the bone giant and the zombie dragon, and killed 3 units of knight, a unit of grail knights and the general, breaking the enemy army and winning the game. The carrion hit the 2nd knight brigade in the side and killed 2 stands for the loss of one, disrupting the 2nd knight brigade.

My opponent made a number of mistakes, both in deployment (he had the knights brigades on one flank, one behind the other, preventing them hitting in the same turn) and in employment of his forces (his expendable infantry and squires did very little, and he committed his general to combat, allowing him to be killed).

However my chariots did pretty much nothing, and my warmachines killed one stand of squires before getting overrun.

My liche Priests performed very well, the highlight being one killing a stand of grail knights with death touch, which left the general only accompanying one stand.

How should I improve my army? I've got a feeling a full brigade of cavalry (240 points) instead of two units might be one thing to do, ditching the warmachines. Should I ditch the chariots in favour of 8 more units of warriors and anoth liche priest?

I did sit down with my opponent and advise him never to commit his general to combat, and to get a hero on pegasus with sword of might for tipping the balance in vital combats for next time.

I tend to think you want to go either shooty or not shooty, which means either a full brigade of shooters or none.

Carrion is excellent -- like U/D cavalry but it can fly.

Do you want to have an effetive list or a Fun list ?

Effetive List:
Forget Bonethrower.
Forget Skull Chuka.
Forget Giant.
Forget Sphinx

Take the 4 Lich Priest and the Tomb King (Dragon for Lich priest is depending on your playstile)
Take the maximum of Chariots (meaning 6)
Take 2 Carrions
Take as much Foot Troops as possible (I allways take around a 50:50 mix of Archers and Speerman)

My experience is that this is the most effective list.

Your goal should be to reach at least Break point 13.

Fun List:
Add Bone Giant and Sphinx upon desire....but pointwise they are to expensive.
Bone Thrower - redicolous thing not worth the points even if we would reduce to 45 points.
Skull Chuker - It can be nice but you allways have an issue to protect it from counter attack.

That´s my experience in quite a lot of games.

Cheers
Claus

Personally, I like the Sphinx as it is the only thing that can actually stand against a cavalry charge and not be automatically shovelled off in one round's melee. I like to think of it as a second line mainstay (front line is skeleton speedbumps). That is your anvil. The hammer you need is a mix of cavalry, bone giants and chariots. Think Russian WW2 in defence. Defence in depth with a big counter punch in reserve.

That's just the way I play em!
