[BFG] Retribution Battleship
« on: November 01, 2011, 07:31:50 PM »
;Dfinally getting around to stripping and repainting an old retribution i picked up.

it appears to be complete, I dont notice any missing parts

Paint has just been globed on it tho   ???  not too noticeable are the ridiclous amounts of glue  >:(  it also appears to have been improperly stored, evidenced by the bent spires  :'(

im guessing this has been repainted a few times without being stripped also from the red under some of the parts ::)

at any rate this should keep me busy for a while  ::) still havent figured out what im going to do with this either as ive never been much of a fan of the retribution rules...

*edit* omg... What a pain in the rear! I have it about 90% stripped now including all the resin, there were at least 4 layers that I saw along with boat loads of glue  ::). The model was never stripped of flash and none of the parts were sanded to fit flush ::) hence all the glue I suppose. Anyway its like 1:30 I'm going to soak it overnight and try to get the rest cleaned off tomorrow, then the unenviable task of colors... :D

FWIW, I use isopropyl alcohol, 91%.  I find that this loosens the acrylic paint and softens two-part epoxy glue.  It has no effect on super glue, though.  I generally let the figures that I am stripping soak for at least 24 hours.

Good luck!

Thanks! Ive been using simple green for plastics and nail polish remover for metal . Im a big fan of the remover because it strips resin and superglue off of the bits also, but I must try this isopropyl alcohol what effect does it have on resin?

Isopropyl alcohol will not react at all with plastic or resin.  I've been using isopropyl alcohol to strip plastic figures for years.

I've accidentally stripped paint off a laptop with iso. Plastic underneath was fine, paint wasn't though. :P

Well its stripped, took a while mostly because of the 3 or 4 layers of goop that I had to dig through. ::)

The only really bad damage to the model. It looks like something hit itmaybe? At any rate theres a large gouge that cuts one of the turrets almost completely off and scars up the "wing" a bit.

Now just to figure out a color scheme for it as I dont see this being a part of any of my current fleets. I've worked up a Firestorm just playing around with red and a blue/black scheme... looks kinda plain tho  :-\.

Try picking out some of the detail with blue/black.  Or even white or yellow if you want to brigthen it up.

Did you wash the red?  That will bring out the detail also.

I like the prow.  I think the ship needs an echo of the colors on the prow further back on the ship.

Try a wash that is a mix of red and dark brown.  The details will pop out.

Yup liking it alot more with some other detailing done, added more "metal" detailing and highlighted some large surfaces with the blue/black. Also painted on more "lights" yellow on the tops/sides and a pastel green on the bottom.

hum Ive got a half dozen firestorms to paint so ill try the dark brown/red mix on the next one I tackle, I want to have this down pat on the smaller ships before I try hitting that battleship as its going to be painted in pieces (theyre a pain to paint assembled). The reasl problem is finding time... I work too much ::).

Hey thanks for that! My wife is on the edge about this tho :-\. She's not sure what she doesn't like, but she does say the red/yellow reminds her of mcdonalds  ::).

lol on mcdonalds...

Good start.

The red only/black prow was perhaps to bland but now it seems a bit colour heavy. It'll be less noticable on a larger ship I think.

Some sharp highlights recommended.

Yes, I beleive that with a bit more direction on the rest of them it should look much better. The problem I have most with this first one is that Its not cohesive, going in and repainting areas did not do it justice  :-\.

I retract my previous statements reguarding the "mcdonaldsness" of the firestorm.
