[WM] Berzerkmonkey's Chaos
« on: March 15, 2013, 07:46:02 PM »
I was initially going to make this a catch-all thread for all of my WM projects, but I fear I won't be prolific enough to warrant that. As such, I'll just post my most recent (and first!) WM army: Chaos!

To get things started, here is a group shot of the almost finished army:

"What's left?" you may ask - I have to finish up the bases on a few of the units and paint up another three heroes. What's cool about this project is that, once it is completed, it will be my first complete army ever! Backstory: I've been involved with Warhammer/40K since about 1987 (remember when Land Raiders came two to a box? I do!) In that time, I've worked on many different projects, but have never completed anything - everything is either a work in progress (I get bored and move on to something else) or I decide that I don't like a paint scheme (or worse - paint formulations change over the years and I can't get the same look between units!) and everything winds up taking a bath and I have to start over.

With this army though, a few things worked in my favor:
  • I got it in one fell swoop (and for a good price.)
  • A few units were already painted (to a good level,) so I had a set scheme I had to adhere to
  • I had a deadline - Adepticon on April 18th!

Anyhow, I wanted to get his post up - I think it will encourage me to finish up the bases quickly so I can get some good photos taken (hopefully this weekend!)

So when are you finishing an Epic army?

It looks good, what's the general in the middle there?

You know me - probably never. I paint them up, play a couple of games, then strip them down again... Actually the Orks are pretty close to completion. There are going to be additional options, in the future, but the core is almost finished. So there.
It looks good, what's the general in the middle there?
I want to say that it's a Bloodthirster variant, but I'm not 100% sure. It was one of the painted models I got with the deal, so decided to keep it on as the general, since it stood out. I had a photo of it, but it was pretty blurry and of no use to society. Hopefully, I can get some better photos up this weekend.

I'm working on the close-ups. I just finished the bases a few minutes ago, so now I deem them ready for photography - I'll probably take some pics tonight.

As promised - closeups!

The army general (This came pre-painted, but I'm showing it out of completeness.)

Ogres

Chaos Knights

Chaos Warriors

Mounted Marauders

Chaos Marauders (again, I didn't paint the Marauders)

Harpies (don't look kids - they're nekkid!)

Chaos Hounds

Chaos Sorcerer

Chaos Hero

Hero and Standard Bearer

I'm pretty happy with them. In retrospect, I may have been a little heavy-handed with the flock, but I couldn't match the flock that was on the completed stands, so I had to add new stuff to the existing flock. Also, I'm not crazy like Dave, and I won't be painting eyeballs, but I'll have to go back to the Ogres at some point and do their eyes. They're large models and, while not easily noticeable on the models themselves, the photos really highlight the lack of peepers on those guys.

They look really nice!  Thanks for the pictures!  What did you use for the flocking?  I want to use that flocking for some of my own armies.

Thanks! The basing material is the old GW basing (I don't think they make it anymore), with the three sizes of stone - I didn't think it would work well, due to the scale, but interestingly, the smaller bases tend not to pick up the larger stones. It's kind of interesting...

The flock itself is the GW Dead Grass - I got the old version though, in the round container. I'm not 100% sure it is the same as the current version, as I don't have the new stuff to compare.

Thanks - I thought dead grass was appropriate to the army, though I still think I was a little heavy-handed with it.  I'll probably wind up using it for any future "evil" armies I do. I'll keep the greener stuff for the good guys. :P
