So. It has finally happened. Official model supply is more or less gone, we have to make do with what we have. Therefore, I present first two tutorials from planned series ‘Let’s build some ships’. I’m your techpriest Khar and I’ll guide you through the world of scratchbuilding

.
I’ve found necessary pictures on ebay, at the same time checking if all the needs stuff is readily available.
First of all, we’ll start with something simple. Orca class Tau escort. What you will need, is one complete 40k Gun Drone [some parts of it will be needed for the other ships!]

, a bit of plasticard and 3 40k Tau Fire Warrior grenade containers [these come just as cheap as it can possibly get on Ebay. Buy a whole lot, as most of my Tau designs use them. Such a simple part, such possibilities…]

That’s all you need to make an Orca. Here’s how.
1: Take both drone pulse carbines. Glue them together like that [the red part requires cutting off]:

2: Take a drone body. Cut it in half like this. Keep the other half [you’ll use it later, I promise…] You can use either half here, to add some variation among your ships.

3: Combine both elements. Like this.

4: Now, what you need is adding some details. First of all – glue in the grenades, so it looks like that.

5:Next, cut some geometric shapes from plasticard and glue them to the prow. Some round sprue fragments may also help.

6: Congratulations, you’ve got yourself an Orca

Next episode: Explorer! [Actually, I've text already written, I just need to do some diagrams on cutting plasticard
