GothiComp 2013 - the Feedback Thread
« on: August 22, 2013, 12:13:23 PM »
Hello,

Just like last year I decided to open a general feedback thread for GothiComp.

Feel free to talk and discuss all and everything about the GothiComp 2013 entries. But wait talking about the grand final submissions until the voting has been closed.

Do you have a question regarding an entry (how did you paint that! how did you convert this!) feel free to ask.

But also feel free to give painting tips to entries. Or ask if you want to get tips to improve. Tell us how you take a great picture of a vessel and so forth.

Constructive critisism is something a lot of people appreciate. This to enhance someone's skills.

Furthermore feel free to give feedback on how the competition was organized and how it can (can it?  ::)) be made better.

Have fun!
 :)

But why is this in the archive subsection?  ;)

So I can use my mod powers to move it all around.

Thanks.

The ability to change your vote through the voting interface would be cool, and pictures of the entries within the voting thread would also be awesome.

Hey,

The last part : I did look at it this year. But its quite a lot of work. Perhaps for the finals it is very viable option to have pictures (thumbnails?) within the threads themselves.

And why on earth would you want to change a vote you made?

I hit the wrong fleet in the first fleet round because I thought the fleet was the single ship thread. A stupid mistake but the fleet i voted for was nice anyway so I went with it. Still it would have been nice to change it if need be.
I don't make the rules, I just think them up and write them down.

For example the issue where people didn't notice that it was 2 votes could have been easily resolved if one could change their own vote. Various other mistakes made while voting would also become irrelevant. It might also go some way to reducing impact of incorrect listings and mistakes made because of them.

As for adding the images, I'm sure a volunteer would be happy to add a post to the vote thread, including the thumbnail and linking to the actual image. I was tempted to do it at one point, but I figured there was some sort of reason why it hadn't been done.

Not sure if its related/considered relevant but registration on the forums currently seems to be disabled?

Hey,
Standard epicomps & gothicomp policy: no new users in the week of final round voting.

@Islacrusez @ Andrew:
hmm I will ponder it. I just hope that accidental false votes hadn't any influence on the winners in the end in all previous years or this year. I hope it is an occassional miss and Andrew is the only one this year ;)
As for missing the second vote: since the one vote which was given at the entry you most liked came through, it is of a little less concern a second one hadn't been made.

As for linking: no paticular reason. Only time constraints.

Thanks for the kind words on my escort.  Unfortunately I have the ADD when it comes to building stuff.  I started building that escort like seven years ago and only recently found it waiting to be finished in its little drawer.

Step by step will be impossible as its been too long.  In a nut shell, from memory,  I cut the top silhouette out of a piece of thick plasticard, maybe .125-.150 of an inch, with a jewelers saw.  I then cut the bridge and dorsal bits once again in silhouette from the side out of .125 card.  I sloted the first piece so the bridge could fit into it from the front.  Put together looking at it from the front it forms a cross shape with the bridge section, dorsal section and the two wings forming the ends of the cross.

Next I disassemble the two parts and taking a file I file a slant on the wing so that looking at it from the front it looks diamond shaped.  After that I have the basic shape of a deimurg ship.  Last thing to do is to cut out very thin plasticard sheet, I believe it was .015 into the "deimurg" shapes.  If you look at the forgeworld cruisers you will see that the surface forms kind of a ziggaurat of very thin sheet with an almost coastline effect.  Like little island made of tiny squares.  The bottom shape on the hull larger and the next levels smaller.  After that some thin strips for the details everywhere else. I have a nice selection of styrene, pre-made rod, half-round and strip.  Plastruct makes them but other hobby places sell it.  I dished out a rod with a bur for the tiny radar dish on the front.  The front curved pieces I believe I filed the front round and burred out the back.  Don't really remember though.

After this I made molds and cast up enough for my fleet.  I still have the molds so if anyone wants to buy some ships contact me.  Its not much of a description, sorry, but my tech level is fairly low so even if I had step by step pictures, which I don't, I couldn't write on them to point out stuff anyway.  Hope that helps.  If anyone has any specific questions let me know.
