artillary
« on: April 13, 2014, 03:37:33 PM »
Having just finished playing wm for best part of a week , i have a few questions regarding artillary .

1 Empire morters , can they fire over interveening troops and terrain similar to rock lobbers ?.

2 if artillary fired and hit empire tank , does it have armour saves ? And does it still class as defended target ?.

1) Empire mortars have the same stats as empire cannons as far as I'm aware.

2) It depends on what the rules say. Some artillery lets you save, some does not.

1) you need  Line of sight to shoot. And as Stormwind says, there are no special rules for the mortars, they are just alternate models for cannons

2) there was significant discussion of the interaction of cannon and steam tank rules previously on this forum. Worth a look (mainly because I'm not sure a consensus was reached)

1) The only artillery that can shoot over troops, it mean without line of sight(LOS) is the Trebuchet in Bretonnian list. All the other artillery need LOS to fire.

2) In my opinion, Steam tank has armour of 3+ and count as defended. For example Cannons, denies armour save and enemies in fortified count as defended. Enemies in defended count as open.
So in my opinion,
The rules: if a cannon shoot a steam tank, count as open and denies the armour roll.
The fluff: Steam tanks are powerful but not cannon-proof.

Steam Tanks are a problem when facing cannons. Cannons say they regard defended/fortified as 1 level lower but Steam Tank says it always counts as defended. My personal view is that the rules are poorly worded and shouldn't say the tank is defended, only that it receives a benefit which acts in a very similar fashion to that rule! Basically i think each group is going to make their own choice with regard to this rule and i think both can be argued... my advice would be to talk it through with your group/opponent before the battle and go with what you both feel works better. Regardless of which way you decide he armour save should still be made with whichever penalty the attack dictates.
