[Warmaster] A magnetic forest
« on: April 28, 2014, 04:37:04 AM »
Hello all,

I have just finished this forest. I wanted a beautifull but usable forest. It's not that easy to balance between esthetism and usage... So i had the idea of setting my trees on a metalic base, and prepare a base with magnets.

Here is how i manage to do that. It can be usefull for other usages.

Step 1  : Prepare a base with a coping saw.

Prepare the border with a wood scissors and then sand them.

Step 2 : Prepare a base for each tree with dense foam with more or less the form of a cone.

Step 3 : Glue the bases on a metal rondel (1 cm here)

Yes, it's time consuming.

Step 4 : Glue some magnets where you want on the base. I have cut them here, but it was because i could not find some in my island. Surely you can easily find some where you live.

Step 5 : Texture for the base. Prince August is my favorite mixture.

Step 6 : Paint your base. Clean the magnets after that.

Step 7 : Texture your tree bases. I used Prince August's Artificial Stone here.

Step 8 : Paint your tree's bases. If you did a good job, the texture allow to simulate roots.

Step 9 : Add what you want on your forest base.

Step 10 : Add water every day. Trees will quickly grow.

Step 11 : Beware, unexpected animals of things can occur.

Step 12 : Let your armies enjoy there new terrain.

It looks very good. I did a similar thing as Warhammer terrain, but I left the tree stumps on the base and had magnets in them. Your method gives a much smoother base to move the models over- great for Warmaster. I also like your optional animals.

Is there a reason there are no trees in the middle of the base? Do you have a plan for that area?

Yes. First, i had no more trees :)

And second, i liked at first the idea of a clearing. Even if now i'm less fan.

I have a small house made of wood from Baueda range. I can put it in the middle.

I think i will work on an orc idol too, and probably a chaos altar or something.

But with the forest finalised, i realise i could have put trees everywhere, and just used the magnets to make my clearing... It will be for the next one :)
