How much is too much?
« on: September 07, 2015, 04:26:32 AM »
Hi guys

I'm only new to Warmaster, as I was suffering from the Struggling-Student syndrome when it was originally released, and afterwards there were too many other shiny thing to spend money on...

Now I've been able to buy a huge amount of Warmaster, mainly painted, and after sorting them out in the last weekend, I came to the following conclusion:
High Elf 4500+pts
Orks 4000+ points
Tomb Kings 4000+ points
Bretonnia 4000+ points
Chaos 12000+ points (that's right... )

now... I might be wrong... but I think I have a bit too much of the chaosy stuff.
I know that even 4000 is a high number to put on the table in one go, but, since I intend to have quite a few multiplayer games, that amount of points isn't going to be just sitting on the shelf.

So my question is, how many point make for a manageable game of about 3-4 hours, with 2 players?
I plan to put the rest up on trade offer, in exchange for Empire (none at all in the collection), and Dwarf (about 1000pts unpainted in a box).

Thanks in advance for any help!

Sven

Welcome, Sven.

For a couple of experienced players, 2000 points is manageable within 3-4 hours. When you first start out, that may go down to 1.5 or even 1K while you're trying to work your way through the rules.

Good on ya for some ace collecting   :D   I'm sure you'll find ample trade opportunities here.

4k is high but still somewhat reasonable. 3k allows you to have plenty of options for 2k armies.

Don't worry! I think we all have a problem around here...  Here's my lead mountain, of which I have painted about 10%:

HIGH ELVES: ~5545pts
CHAOS: ~5530pts
EMPIRE: ~4140pts
KISLEV: ~2600pts
LIZARDMEN: ~2500pts
DARK ELVES: ~2000pts
DOGS OF WAR: ~400pts
WOOD ELVES: ~600pts
UNDEAD: ~100pts

I have yet to have an army on the table bigger than 3000 points - I imagine that 12k is... insane, and only useful for a Chaos civil war with 4 players each taking an army of 3k... You could have a battle between all four chaos gods. =D

I started off with 2k of Witch Hunters and thought I could handle it but before I knew where I was I had 3k of Empire and it just spiralled out-of-control from there ...

But seriously, I think 3 to 4k is a really good size for what’s in your carry case.  It should give you lots of options when creating ‘standard’ 2k lists (for games of 2-3 hours) and also gives you the option of bigger multi-player games that last all day.

But 12k of Chaos is an interesting challenge. Given the points cost of some units, I suppose it’s easy to get to that point. If it is all ‘vanilla’ Chaos rather than including Daemons, Chaos Dwarves and Beastmen, then you’ll be hard pushed to use it all.  So those might be top of your trading list?  Or perhaps look at how you could you could paint/re-paint the minis and use them as proxies for lists such as Albion, Norse, Orcs or maybe even Skaven.

I have at least 4K and up to 10K for 7 or 8 of the Warmaster armies (not all painted yet).
Having massive collections allows you to field 'themed' armies e.g. an all cavalry chaos army or a nuln artillery train. It also gives you variety - your opponent never knows what you are going to field next.

Occasionally you may be able to play massive battles over a weekend?

I've played in more than one 10K a side mega Warmaster game....
If it were me, I'd keep them as they won't take up much space and you'll never be able to buy them again.

12k  is a lot - good work!

I have about that of Elves, with 'only' 7k painted

I have lots of Empire, quite a bit of Araby, Orcs & Lizardmen. And a few other non-WM Fantasy 10mm armies. They are quite addictive.

Thanks for the replies guys.
ive just fixed up the bases of the undead, they look ok. The other armies are all better painted than this one so im happy.
Ill work out whats not usable and trade it and will cull severely in the chaos stuff.
I hope to be able to bulk lut my dwarves to 2500 and get a full 2500 empie army out of it!
Will post some pics in the near future
