What price a complete Heroquest base-set?
« on: July 06, 2016, 07:43:20 PM »
Hey all!

My brother would really like to have a dungeon crawler to play with his kids but there is nothing on the market now that has quite the same simplicity and tactile nature as Heroquest.

I keep looking on eBay and prices vary wildly for sets that are all in similar condition.

I was wondering if it was possible to get a complete original set for less than £50.  I am willing to strip paint off the odd model or replace the odd missing bit using "bits sellers" on eBay but ideally I would like to just have something that can be used out of the box without too much repair / bodging / "making do".

Is there a difference between heroquest and warhammer quest?

Yes, a big one.

Heroquest was sold through Milton Bradley, as a collaboration with GW, so it had a huge reach and was in most toy stores and even department stores.

It was a lot simpler, played on a single board, with all plastic and cardboard pieces, no metal character packs.  expansions, likewise, were all plastic and cardboard and sold in places that sold board games.  It was the perfect "gateway game" and simple enough to explain to quite young children.

I have bought a Hero Quest for my kids here and they still play with it with pleasure with their friends. It's a good game.

I think i bought it for 40 Eur 5 or 6 years ago. I would say 50 GBP is a honest price now. Better to be patient and maybe buy an incomplete cheap game and complete it via ebay sellers. They are numerous to propose cards or figs independently.

Check on forums too. They are sold here sometimes. Put some announces.

Ah :) Did not know there was that much difference. I believe I have a complete set of the Warhammer-version but havent checked it out in ages so not sure. No help here anyways, sorry :)

I am pretty sure though that it does'nt contain a Gargoyle, which everybody knows is the best part of Heroquest ;)

Heroquest can be gained very cheaply, with a little luck. Being one of those old toy-shop games, many people have it without having an idea of its actual value. I've come across it at yard sales, and picked up a mostly complete set (in very scruffy box) for about $30AU.

eBay always ramps up the prices quite ridiculously- I'd pick almost any other avenue, including facebook groups and forums.

Is it something that can played with pieces one makes themselves?  And are the rules online?  I'd never heard about before this forum, but it sounds pretty cool.  The only dungeon crawler I've played is Imperial Assault, which was alright, but I found I was just constantly stressed during the campaign.

@Tiberius:

There are some great fan sites and they have high quality scans of lots of components, so you can replace some of the cardboard items without much trouble.

But I would really like to have a set with all the furniture and miniatures intact.  As I say, I will probably have to get an incomplete set, then get some spares from others who have cannibalised a set.

I had actually looked up what you are thinking of just shy of a year ago Stormwind.  Collecting all of the pieces always came out to be more expensive then a completed set.  I think 80 bucks was where I was at with the price on ebay.  Show a little patience and one might pop up, do some research and find a list for of parts for yourself to look at to do a checklist on the ebay pictures to see for yourself how incomplete they are.

If you do end up piecing it all together you will either need to find a LOT of mini's to replace with something else or buy the actual things piece by piece like you say, very expensive.

The deeper you dig you will also find that most of the die hard players have actually replaced most everything with something else anyways so if you feel you would be willing to do that you could.  I already have plans to have a 3' by 3' board printed off so I can cut out the rooms and make a modular board on paper steel and then magnets under all of the mini's and a magnet sheet to lay out first, underneath it all.  "Plans"  ;)

In the end I think you are looking at storage, if you want the original you can get a box with some terrible storage or if you go full custom you can make a new box with everything in it.

In my experience, I like to start with the original and I waited almost a month and a full set showed up with 1 picture of the box and one picture of most everything hidden underneath the dungeon master screen.  The seller had no idea what it was and even though a few blind bids were put on it, I took a leap of faith when no one else did and got a completed set (minus 1 magical item card) for not even 50 bucks shipped.  I even received in the mess of stuff, the mini's from what I have learned is a second edition D&D promotional box of pewter miniatures.  That being said, the board is warped and the box is barely together at all anymore and I have 2 broken orcs.

Again, 80 bucks, 100 pounds? I think would be a fair price for a completed set on ebay but my maximum, about.
Also, a fan note.  The American version is the hardest as the treasure deck is a 60/40 of good to bad.  I believe there is a "European" and a "French" version that is at 70/30, good to bad events.  Something with the monsters as well.

Check out the Heroquest forums here, me and Irisado talked about it way back when I was in your shoes.
PM me if you want a set of the original rulebook and quest book, I have a pdf you just print out and fold in half and staple and you have the exact original stuff. oh and I found a link to a place with everything you can print yourself if you wanted to build your own expansions to the original.
