Tale of Warmaster painters [November]

A new month a new thread, and we are moving into the final strectch for some, whilst other are faultering behind

Two shamans, one command stand, 3 units of archers and 8 unit of horsearchers done using block-basecolours and Armypainter. I will go back to these to add some more detail colour after AP dries! but I am not unhappy by how they came out so far.

KK, so pictures ... they are a bit darker then usual, because I used the downstairs lighting, without special do-daahs, and I tried autocorrecting them when I uploaded, but IMO the darker picture shows the effect of Armypainter off better.

Lex I understood that the Armypainer was not dry when you take the shots?

The aspect is a little bit glossy for my taste, but it seems the armypainter is doing its job

Very interesting stuff. I wonder how different the effect would be if you used a Devlan Mud wash instead of AP? I'd guess it'd look pretty similar but a little flatter. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing these based up and rephotographed.

Did you find the process faster/easier than non-dipping?

no, dry in 12 hours, total dry in 24, and those shots are done < 1 hour after painting   9-)  but I am not sure how I end up tomorrow for time   

But indeed, it seems to do the trick, although I started hesitantly applying some, I switch to putting on serious dabs....

I did some block colours before applying AP, and will go in to touch up a LOT of stuff before going to basing. Also probably end up with a matt finish eventualy, altough the shininess might wear of ahen AP dries

Varnish Matt "Marabu Mattlack" kills the glossy effect quite well. I do not know how it works with armypainter

Ostland Empire.  Didn't get anything done on the Ostland army this week other than basing and priming a hero. A lot of thing cropped up and took all my time, but will hopefully be getting back to business this week and getting some painting done.  I have a lot of units left to do in order to make the December wrap up, but I'm still trying to get the army finished by then. 

Nice work as usual azrael71 in getting multiple units done.  I really like those Forest Goblins. 

The shading of the Army Painter seems to have worked out well.  Lex are the results what you were expecting?  I was thinking of using a Minwax dip when I do my Ork & Goblin army and from your results it looks like that should work. 

The Minwax dip method (and Army Painter too I assume) is very glossy even when it dries, but a dullcoat finish will get rid of that very nicely.

If there is another round in January I'll be signing up again.  Probably with Orks and Goblins.

Yeah, more so now they have had a chance to dry out. I will go back to the units to "paint between the lines" and in retrospect should have applied some more "base" colours as that would effectivly have meant the units where fieldable after the AP treatment. And of course I still need to "matt" them up a bit.... right now they look like they are wet with rain......

Have you 'dipped' the entire army now then Lex? If not, then obviously it would would be a good idea to finish off those details now prior to dipping the rest.

Its a good overall effect BTW, I'm not sure on your choice in having 'yellow Goblins' though. If and when I complete a Viking army that I've got the start of I may end up using this army builder technique, even though I have always considered it 'cheating'...

No, I just have the characters, 3 units of archers and 8 units of horsearchers done. Not knowing what to expect I did not want to "risk" fubarring all of it in one go   

Also, I am "touching" up the dipped units now, and that has become easier, just need to fill in the spaces between the lines.... and in some cases reapply AP later.
And a greater part of "the rest of my army" is on the moddeling board right now, as I decided NOT to use Orc Boarboys for the Winged Lancers but am making a more theme appropriate sollution.

Now is the time to be knuckling down to push on to the finish.

This week I have been mainly painting savage & black orcs, whilst pondering how to do a chaos dwarf terrain piece!

And my entry, finished but for the basing/varnishing (it's raining so they'll have to wait), my Inner Circle Knights featuring generously donated knights from my fellow TOWM Painters...



As you might be able to see I removed the 'tassles' I'd made for the lances as they actually looked worse painted than they did when they were just greenstuffed (I thought it'd be the other way round!). I left on the two pennants which l think look ok and the cloak I made for the standard bearer. I think I'll have to leave GS work to other people for a while!

Next up it's going to be a wizard, he's half done already so I may actually get an entry in on time next week.

Very nice, and as an aside in clearing up some boxes I found a little zip-lock bag with another character pack in it....

And of course, nice Orcs, I really am getting rather jealous of both your ability to paint quickly, and of course the time that you have to do so...


As a bit of an update, I guesstimate that I should have my unit of Legion finished mid next week, depending on how much time I can get in the evenings. I'm likely going to have to call it a day after that, at least until the New Year as I'll have both RL demands on my evening free time (it's graduate job application season), and I'm going to try to see if I can paint some stuff to sell on ebay. If I manage to do the later then maybe I can get the wife a decent Xmas present...
