[WM] single-stand units
« on: April 11, 2020, 05:37:58 PM »
Hope everyone is safe and well.

Curiosity general question(s). Single-stand units in Warmaster. What do you use them for? And why? What drawbacks or benefits do you see with them?

Do you mean like, Giants and other monsters, or things like Skirmishers or Salamanders?

I think that - in a min-maxed army - folks wouldn't really use them at all.  I think they're characterful, more than anything else.

In 7 times 7 aeons when I have gotten around to my Tomb Kings, I will use the Giant and a Scorpion model simply because I have them and want to say I have an army with at least 1 of everything!

Giants and suchlike can be handy as tarpits when the attack becomes a bit fractured, yours or theirs. I had a giant stop a steam tank with help and then assist in blunting a cavalry attack.

They usually have a few attacks which can make for a proper handful of dice to an otherwise average unit so in combination with a unit of boar boys....

I've not played a terrific amount but if I was to employ other single standers then I'd be looking to use the combo. Terror is a factor as well.

Thanks for this. I'm trying to get a sense of their usage and deterrents/encouragements for including them in lists.

They tend to add character if nothing else. Like anything else they can have good days or otherwise but regardless they add to the game narrative. The margins in WM aren't so great that an exceptional unit doesn't occasionally get their arse kicked by the wet lettuce leaf unit. With your big blokes this is true as well but they can generally guts it out for a while as the rest of the crew get their war face on and generate some sense of unification or wade in with another handful of dice.

From what I've been able to gather you're almost always better off taking rank and file but it's just not as much fun.

Some of them have crap stats but are such gorgeous models I don't want to leave them at home!

Case in point the Dark Elf Hydra.

Look at this cute lil' guy!  How can you say no that face? I mean... faces?
