Title: [BFG] - Blast from the past (old sketchup project)
Post by: Malika on October 03, 2013, 03:43:35 PM
So I found my really old photobucket account with all sorts of ships I designed in the past. I might look into them again, tweak them a bit and put them up on Shapeways. Let me know waht you think! :)

Imperial Warpike:

The Warpike will be altered a bit to have larger weapon batteries instead of all those small broadside turrets. I'll probably shrink the ship somewhat so it can stand in as a Dauntless Light Cruiser (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Dauntless_Light_Cruiser#.Uk2NNWT0_Fl).

The dagger will need some heavy modification, but then it will become a destroyer, or maybe even something smaller.

The Harbinger will have more details added, maybe a few turrets on top, making it a larger transport ship.

The Broadside Carrier will need to be widened up, and then shrunk, to make it a nice alternative for the Defiant Light Cruiser (http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Defiant_Light_Cruiser#.Uk2OR2T0_Fk).

Sadly enough I've lost the original files of this project.

But...it enabled me to make new ones!

After a couple of hours I've got the front part of the ship ready. Now I need to do the engine, bridge and that sort of thing.

(http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/ag77/Stefmanovic/3d%20modelling/Lightcarrier01_zpsbc887cea.jpg) (http://s1299.photobucket.com/user/Stefmanovic/media/3d%20modelling/Lightcarrier01_zpsbc887cea.jpg.html)

Plan is that this fellow will be a light cruiser, comparable to the Defiant Class Light Cruiser from BFG. But I'll tweak it slightly more to stay on the safe side. But I think the design so far is original enough. Expect it on Shapeways in the coming days/weeks. (unless somebody would be interested in casting it...)

I hope the printing will be able to handle the details. That's why some of them seem slightly bigger (like those studs).

In the meantime I've updated the design slight to match the Imperial Warpike. Also to move it slightly away from being too clearly GW.

Thanks a lot dude!

Sadly enough I've removed the antenna. Thing is that they're too thin to be printed. Need to come up with something different...

Out of curiosity.....  how/where do fighters and bombers (assuming some of them actually WILL survive) gonna land?

Same place as where they came out of (launch bays on the sides).

As for how, I think that's a general flaw with a lot of (space opera) scifi, in which space ship battles are based on WWII dogfights and age of sail tactics. But that's not something I'm here to fix, I'm just playing with the existing (and fundamentally flawed) concept. :P

That is a regular logistic nightmare.....   not just for trafic control, but also for the flightdeck crew  8) :o

How different is it from flightdecks in BFG, Star Wars, Robotech, etc?

True, but there are proper examples out there.....

Battlestart G.  Dedicated launchbays with a turboboost to get them up speed and they (normally) land in the sidenacells.

Robotech I seem to remember something akin to the flightdeck of a waterbased carrier?

It was meant as a constructive remark, it would be nice to see something nore geared towards that classic carrier approach

True, I know what you're getting at. That type of realism is something I'm definitely after for my other project (http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=5682.0). But even then I'd like to take it a level higher.

By the way, here (http://gamedesignreviews.com/scrapbook/the-logic-of-space-battles/) is an interesting article on space battles, and how flawed they generally are.

I know! :) I apologize if I came across as hostile towards your feedback, that was really not my intention. :(

In both shows fighters wouldn't fly on curved flight paths. Now Babylon 5 was more like it. Don't get me wrong I love me some space ship sci fi.

With BFG cruisers being 3000 - 5000 metres and fighters no more then 100 metres it will all work out in the end. :)

I was going to go buy one, but unfortunately I spotted the price-tag. €30, I think not.  :-[

I noticed that yeah. I've been trying to bring printing costs as low as possible and keep the markup insanely low, but it's a tough one.

I'll try to solve this in the coming days, which will probably mean they'll be sold in squadrons. The price tag will go up, but you'll might even pay up to 30-40% less.

Would printing one and casting it yourself not be more cost-efficient? It looks like it'll cast well enough if you do a two-part mould with left and right halves?

I don't have the time and resources to cast and sell my designs, hence me doing it through Shapeways for the time being.

I think a mid/long term goal of this would be that I collaborate with a company/caster/producer, so that I do the designs and they take care of production and distribution.

At the moment the models are back at the drawing table, Shapeways notified me that some parts can't be printed, so I have to tweak them a bit. They'll be available again tomorrow.

The Martinet (http://shpws.me/prGp) and Absolutist (http://shpws.me/ptk4) are both available again. The antenna have been removed, and some parts have been thickened up.

Whilst strong & flexible plastics are available options, I would recommend Frosted Detail or Frosted Ultra Detail.
