Title: Tale of Warmaster Painters - May 2016

The format I was thinking of is below (one month sprints will allow for more participants, I think, compared to a year long affair). If people want to do something different, discuss.

So, thanks Dave for leading this.

I'm in and finally I decide to go for a Daemon Nurgle Papa Army.

My final goal is:

3x Daemon hordes ...225
2x Daemon swarms ...90
2x Daemon cavalry ...220
1x Daemon flyer ...80
1x Grater Daemon...300
1x Daemon overlord..135
1x Daemon Hero ..100

Total 1150  9 Units BP5

Have all here except daemon flyer, I need to make my order today  ::) also I need bases   :o

Need to think a mood for basing... What do you think guys? rocky? lava? sand? warp? green grass?

For 31 of May There are 5 weeks. I used to paint one unit per week but to be honest maybe I could not manage it. So I will say the half. 3 units.

My goal for 31 march:
1x Daemon horde
1x Daemon character
1x Damon cavalry

No problem. If we wanted to make this a monthly thing you could start the next one (June 2016) the last week of May.

What kind of daemons?

Ok, let's see how it goes :)

About the daemons, power of Nurgle is coming....

It always been my favourite chaos power, so the time for having a warmaster army of nurgle has come!

There might be more, as I'm painting up more units for the colchester event. Ah, and I'll try to finish Some wound counters with a model for my orc army.

Title: Re: Tale of Warmaster Painters - May 2016
Post by: andys on April 22, 2016, 06:55:00 AM
I might have a go at a few units of Araby Desert Riders, figures from Irregular, codes TC1 and TC5.

Edit:

Thinking about it, I'll do a unit of Bel's new Undead Spearmen as Grave Guard for my Vampire Counts army. I'll be buying Kallistra Skeleton Warriors for the basic skeletons, so these new figures look sufficiently different to proxy as Grave Guard.

Just some tips in case you are willing to upload images...

1) upload your picture in photobucket, imageshack, or similar
2) copy paste the code IMG.   It will start with      [IMG]http://blablabla.jgp[/img_ ]
I am finishing the code with a underscore only with the purpose to show you the code.
3) If you want to reshape to fit the size of the forum type the command width=700 after the IMG. Notice is sensible to capital leters and spaces, so it should just as shown.

[IMG width=700]http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4627_zpsnae72ghs.jpg[/IMG_]

hope it helps

Oops yes three armies at once. Not including my Albion one!

Well I figures if I wanted to play/campaign with friends I was gonna have to provide the armies. Now I've got x3 WFB  3rd edition comrades into it. So I have an empire a dark elf and a Brettonian recruit. At Salute my buddy picked up a bag of "pendraken" medievals. When I checked them I said I think they're GW. He got 2 units of Knights. 2 units of men at arms. 2 units of peasants. Plus a unit of bows and 2 units kallistra peasants. 10 quid!!!!

Good choices for trolls empireaddict, are you going to make the army of Thorgg the Troll King?

My projecto is the army of The Thousend Sons of Saint Papa Nurgle,

I need 3x daemon horde, to make the minium infantry. The problem is that only have 1 blister of plague bearers... but this is not really a problem but a challange. I will split the figures and make two units. The third unit is on the way from insectoid range of magister millitum. I bought it without seeing the figures, but I could figure out that some insectoids could fit as a horde of fly-men, bugg-men from Nurgle.

Then 2x daemon swarms, not have in my actual home the nurglins, but I have some insects, worms from pendraken so I though it could fit and a Nurgle army MUST have some little naughty critters  ;D

2x daemon cavalry, I have some official cavalry and also something that fit perfect, some 28mm nurglings with plague bearers in the back.

1x flyers I was just looking for some giant flies and saw that magister militum have some wasps in the insectoid range, so I could use them for Nurgle.

1x grater daemon this is the monster, the guy who hit in the battlefield. I will use the Chaos Daemon Prince who is clearly from Nurgle... a female warrior who won the status of Demon Prince..very grotesque figure.

Then the charaters:

1x Daemon overlord This is the general. I choose a Nurgle type unclean one big daemon. To show the size I would like to make a little conversion. So I will put the hand upright and put a figure on them, could be a toured soul ready to be eaten by the Unclean one, could be that the Nurgle is granting power to a warrior or could be a Choosen one in the hand of the daemon who is really the one making the commands... just ideas, I will look for the figures or something...

1x Hero Not reallly the daemon topic, but when I think in nurgle I always think in those palanquins of Nurgle... when I was just a kid I love those figures and never had one. So I am starting to think who I could make a Nurgle hero on palanquin. And I have a couple of ideas....

Once the army is planned, I will start with 1x Daemon horde, 1x daemon cavalry and 1x Daemon character I choose the general.

About painting I will try some inks. Toon introduce me in the use giving me some advices, and since then I bought 5 o 6 inks. So Nurgle is a good topic to make some test of who the inks work (I think).

Let's start with some pictures

Title: Re: Tale of Warmaster Painters - May 2016
Post by: empireaddict on May 01, 2016, 11:15:09 AM
@andys, The back story is that I augmented my Chaos Dwarf army with Copplestone and GW Orcs to the point where I could have a standalone 2k Orc army.  This gave me an excuse to imitate the ‘Now for Wrath’ blogger and get some Reaper River Trolls to proxy as giants
http://wrathruinandthereddawn.blogspot.co.uk/2014_08_01_archive.html

And then, having seen Nesbit37’s use of Eureka 18mm Armoured Trolls, I decided that I had to have 2 units of them!
http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=7850.0
http://eurekaminusa.com/collections/fantasy-armoured-trolls

So many thanks to both of them for the inspiration!

I ‘edited out’ the Eureka Trolls without helmets/weapons as they looked a bit out of place.  They might make an appearance as Ogres in a future project.  My plan is to go for a classic blue skin with rusty armour due to their damp habitat and poor personal hygiene.

I am starting with the plague beares and the cavlry from GW. After thinking about how to paint them with inks, finally I used my normal technique,no inks, no brains only heart... black printer and quick build of color with 1 highlight + details. It is very quickly, the units are almost finished. Well, yes I am using an ink for the rusty - organic blades.

@Jchaos79

Do you not normally use washes, like Army Painter or GW ones?
Title: Re: Tale of Warmaster Painters - May 2016
Post by: jchaos79 on May 02, 2016, 10:52:43 PM
Nop. Never use washes until october 2015. (well.. for telling the truth I paint some egypt inf my early stages of WM and used some ink, but only in a couple of units, and some attempts in kislev inf, also an elf cavalry attempt is as far as I can remember my experience in washes.).
Look through my WM project topic, 95% are "flat style"

Now I am trying to learn how to use them effectively and how they fit in my style of painting.

Hi jorg,

For Warmaster Units I use Game Color Wash Lavado Sepia, it's a very light sepia. You can use some water to make it even lighter and if you use hot water it does flow a bit more.

It actually took a bit of work.  Those are Flodden Fields Scottish short pikeman from Pendraken.  I added puffy sleeves and tuffs to their short pikes, plus some good ol' Imperial feathers.  The command is Warmonger stuff.  I posted more pictures of them here:

I committed to painting a unit of Warmonger Miniatures Landsknechte Zweihänder and Pikeniere (Great Swords and Pikemen). These will be red and yellow quartered. I finished up the skin and armor this week and moved on to the yellow. These guys got a wash too, I have yet to do that with the Pikemen. I think I'll base and wash the red first too before moving on to the main color and highlights.

Flagellents! My least favourite Empire troops to paint. All that hair!

How encouraging guys! :p Don't worry. I've just completed seven units of state troops so I'm ready for a change. Trickiest part will be to tie them to the rest of the army I think.

Aquahog - one advantage of flagellents is it's perfectly acceptable to give them a scruffier look than the state troops. Who ever heard of immaculately turned-out flagellents?

Ole - looking very striking already

bsonbudak - I'll second the eagle comments! Beautiful plumage.

Impressive unit ofpanther knights, well done Ole!

While thinking how to base the daemons, I could steal some time so I paint other of Daemon horde and prepare the cavalry. This time using inks with the experience aquire with the great unclean one.

About the basing I am thinking in some black soil with irreal stuff or cristals. I had some decoration powder bought in IKEA very cheap It is call Kulört 0.75Kg 2 euros or something, and I think it could work pretty good. To give the irreal stuff I wanted to add something, have no clue of how to get cheap sharp crystals. Other option is some copper powder or chips that I could get from a metal workbench and mixed with the Ikea dark sand to get a metallic mixture....

any comments or aid?

another update.

Today I recieved the order to magister millitum

I start to play with some ideas to make the Nurgle Palanquin as a Hero for the army (Ok is not entery demon, but I always like the Nurgle palanquins). Here it is what I am planning:

(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4641_zpsb3tvjdmx.jpg)  (http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4642_zpsr1vevohw.jpg)

(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4643_zps9vzclxkn.jpg)  (http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4644_zpskbhoyxvj.jpg)

Then I work a little bit more with my general. I think the paint of the main unclean one is Ok by me. But have three possibilities.

OPTION 1 Unclean on Devouring souls.

OPTION 2 Great Champion raiding Unclean one
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4650_zps4o9g4puy.jpg)

OPTION 3 Great unclean granting power to a young warrior
(http://i648.photobucket.com/albums/uu205/jchaos79/DSCF4649_zps2rogxxca.jpg)

What do you like most or recommend me ?

Ok, it is raining the whole weekend so I took advantage of the weather and paint as much as I could. So the Nurgle army is quite complete. I also paint an extra daemon cavalry (slaanesh) because I wanted to use the inks purple and blue ink.

Finally I drop the idea of metallic chip in the bases, and went for a kind of burnt-volcanic dark soil for the army.

First the Big bad**ss daemon. Grotesque miniature....

My son is helping me with High elf army. It seems he like to add too many layers, so a couple of figures take ages for him.

and on the workbench the Horde number 3, the flyers, the hero on palanquin and the tortured soul figure to finish the general.

It's easy to go nuts, even at 10mm.

My Chaos used to be:
Baneblade Brown basecoat
Dwarf Bronze
Devlan Mud Wash
Verdigris Wash
Dwarf Bronze edge

Now I've cut the Baneblade Brown but still that's a lot of stages to do.

Work continues on the landsknechte for me. I finished the yellow this week and gave the red a basecoat and a wash. After the red's done I still have to do: socks, shoes/leather, pike hafts, gold bits, hair. So likely another week or two but still on course for the end of May I think.

Hey everyone,
Finally I had time for Dwarf Warriors, from Pendraken Warband series. They are kinda bulky but I think it won't make so difference.

Anyway, pictures!

First black undercoat
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac250/dorukdeniz/20160512_164839.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/dorukdeniz/media/20160512_164839.jpg.html)
Then drybrush with gray. It has 2 advantages, imho.
-First is, I can see details on minis :)
-Secondly, they have "crispier" look.

(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac250/dorukdeniz/20160512_165932.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/dorukdeniz/media/20160512_165932.jpg.html)

So basecoats!
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac250/dorukdeniz/20160513_155704.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/dorukdeniz/media/20160513_155704.jpg.html)
(http://i904.photobucket.com/albums/ac250/dorukdeniz/20160513_155718.jpg) (http://s904.photobucket.com/user/dorukdeniz/media/20160513_155718.jpg.html)

As you can see they need wash&highlight but thats all for me for now. Cheers!

Thanks for comments :)
It is my first experience with 10 mm fantasy but sure they are bulky even for other pendraken series.
Btw photos are not good but i promise they will get better when they are finished. :)

Are you using MDF bases?

I bought MDF bases from Sally 4th, and asked him to put steel paper underneath them, so I can put them in a magnetised box/tray for transport.

Thanks! Bone is normally a mid brown base coat, bone on top, chestnut wash, bone again and then ivory to highlight. I do a few more intermediary layers on big surfaces to blend a little more.

I'm pleased with the dragon mount - it's a Microworld Games skeletal dragon with bone wings from a Ral Partha undead pegasus and a GW undead character riding on it.

A little advance. The daemon horde of insect is ready. I am not satisfied with the result. I tried to simulate some sort of chitine, but anyway, I think could be ok for a bunch of ugly critters who ame  from the warp.

Yes - I'm dotting them around the bases that are pretty featureless (carrion, bone giant etc.)

Those insects are suitably horrendous!

Good work on the flagellents Aquahog, although I assume  "done bar painting" is a typo!

I like the texture obtained. And is not a bad idea to base elements of ruins in 40x20 bases to be modular or to delimit a zone.

That way, we can use the search box at the top right on the page to see each of the entries (just search for "[ENTRY]") before we vote at the end of the month.

These are by far the best sculpts for Warmaster I've painted to date. Love single sculpts and the variety it offers when basing :) GW's strips are all nicely sculpted but they can look a bit repetative.

Anyways - these are all GW except for two bannerpieces from Polar Fox's Ironside Orcs. Based white and washed with GW Nuln Oil to preshade skin and bring out details on the rest of the mini's. Painted with Vallejo game colours except for the yellows and any washes which are GW. I finish my miniatures off by brushing on Army Painter's strong tone dip and then a matte spray. Basing is done with bits of cork, fine wallplaster, tufts and scenic grass from various companies.

These were pure joy to paint and base and I would love to do more of these in the future. Very proud of the results and I feel it will be a daunting task for me to follow this up next month. It's been great getting positive feedback from you all and inspiring seeing everyone else's work in progress. Thank you :) Looking forward to seeing all our final results at the end of this month!

(More pictures in my plog)

Cheers

@mlkr, really like the varied nature of the units - it has created a really good horde effect.  And great painting too.

I'm loving the goblins, so much character and energy in the unit! The trolls and squigs really add to the chaotic feel but the unit looks super cohesive, a complete army done in that style would be utterly spectacular on the table, you're on track for having a work of art on yoyr hands mlkr!

On my own commitment, I managed to prime all seven units of dwarf warriors I own today, let's see if I can knock out the two I pledged over the next week!

Really good work, goblinz!

I am finished the flyer and the general. Finally I chose the Nurlge papa eating souls as Dave and Aquahog suggested.  Thanks guys.

Just to prove I am working...here are my slayers and (one of my) dwarf command which I painted Friday night. Couldn't resist a group shot with my tiny little throng.

Apologies to those who have already seen these on the warmaster or oldhammer fbook groups.

Yeah, that is creepily good jchaos. Love the throng also gorrin. I picked up a few reinforcements for mine in the same colors on Ebay a year ago with the mind to strip them and repaint in my own gold/yellow scheme. I haven't had the heart to do it so far however.

Jchaos [ENTRY] May2016

Ok here it is my balance:

- I complete my objective of 1200 pts of Nurgle papa army, and paint an extra unit of slaanesh cavalry.
- I used new techniques of washes and experiment with them. Satisfactory.
- I have fun planning dioramas for my commanders and trying to do new units using alternative figures as MM (also was an excuse to buy more figures... jurl jurl...  ::) )
- I enjoy painting every mini. Complete.

Here is the armylist of May:
1x Daemon General
1x Hero
3x Daemon hordes
3x Daemon cavalry
2x Daemon swarm
1x Daemon flyers
1x Daemon overlord

If you can, place the pictures in the post, rather than attach them. Otherwise prople will have to click on your post to see the pics. They won't be in the search page.

Also, please refrain from quoting text with the entry tag in it. It shows up in the search. Looking at you dry_erase. :P

Don't be! you did a great job.
I always thought the tale of painters is about getting stuff done and not about competition. If the competition thing is getting in the way of participation we should do a poll about having this kind of competition at the end of the show.

I just love seeing stuff getting painted. It motivates me to actually get something done myself ;) It's also very educational when we share WIP's showing off different approaches and techniques being used.

It's also very interesting seeing other manufacturers miniatures painted :) gives me a better idea of size, detailing and such.

I just see the voting as a chance to give someone an extra pat on the back.

Here's my May batch - as I said earlier in the thread, I hit my target mid-month and pushed to paint two more units and a dragon. I'm crap at photographing miniatures and these look much more washed out in the daylight than they are in reality!

The whole lot, advancing with eerie undead silence across a Quality Street lid.

The Bone Dragon character. Not entirely happy with the sculpting on the scarab shield, but it's fine from a distance.

A closer view of the chariots - I loathed painting these in the past, but now I'm getting to enjoy them. Good job really, as I have 3 or more units to go.

Dry_erase: I love the hero on bone dragon, the scarab certainly looks perfect in the photos
Mdivancic: Wonderful colors, I like that your red chariot still ties in a little blue to match the army.  I need to find ways to tie in more colors to my army like that.
Rowlybot: Love the paymaster and the wizard on pegasus!

Thanks. I need to work on my lighting for the photos. The Highlighting that is there is much more apparent in person. The skeletons still need some white highlights and the one horse need the mould line removed or hidden (Damn, missed that).

I'm using three primary colors for units: Blue, Red and Black in that order. If I have more than three unit types I'll repeat the colors. Make it easier to keep the unit's together on the table. I'll also very the browns on the shields when repeating the primary colors.

Mike

I was hoping to get some decals on these for the banners but ran into printer problems. These are "done enough" for the Tale, but I hope to come back to them at one point for the banners, one more dullcote and grass tufts for the Warmonger Miniatures store.

To respond to the queries RE the Pay Wagon - all I can say is what empireaddict informed me as he gave me the wagon!

Apparently the main body is from Magister Militum, it's one of their 15mm Orc chariots.
The wheels are GW Empire artillery wheels which I believe were left over after Jim made his war wagons for his Kislev.
The paymaster himself I added and he's just a generic GW Empire hero from the character pack, he's pinned through his cloak to the side.
The driver, I haven't a clue.
The horses and the yoke, also no clue.
And in the back I added a couple of 28mm ammo crates from a ww2 universal carrier and two of the teeny-tiny treasure chests that came on the Bretonnian Men-at-Arms sprues which I randomly had, plus a spare wheel cos every wagon needs a spare.

Cheers for the motivation with the thread. Seeing the 2nd July approaching and realising I actually need to paint more than 5 units to get my Dogs of War up to 2000pts means I may have been a little 'light' with my next pledge!

I'll post this up here. It was my entry for the month of may, but me waiting till the last moment and then problems uploading the images meant I didn't get them in in time. As they were painted for the month of May, I'm showing them here anyway.

Congratz to Mlkr. Curious how you've done the bases, especially the rocks. I really like those.

Here's the Orc boar boyz:
