Recasting
« on: February 13, 2012, 10:10:41 PM »
Hello all

I wanted to react about a thing Azrael said last week. Did not had time to say it earlier but i have time now, at last.

We where discussing about OOP things and more especially wounded markers :

Quote
I personally don't think they are worth the effort chasing them all down as they often appear in with army deals.
I have a fair few spare.
Plus the moulds for the ultra rare A counter.

Casting or recasting as always been a hot question. For my part i never did it, but it's not a problem (that point of view' engages only me).

But I wanted to bring a thing to discussion :

As a collector, i think it is necessary, when someone make some recasts, to put a clear and well known mark on the recast, to be able to differenciate it at first sight.

At ebay era, we need to protect ourselves and other fellow collectors. So I would love anybody making recasts to clearly present here a picture with its own mark. It seem a need to me.

Nobody want to have the very bad surprise to pay a high price on ebay for a great item and discover after few weeks, when ebay time to complain is gone, that it was a fake/recast.

For example, the A counter produced by azrael (but it's only an example, it's the same for all of us), would sell for a good price on ebay. Knowing Az can produce some, i need to know what to ask to a seller for him to prove the originality of his stuff.

Maybe i'm not very clear, sorry for my bad english. But i think i have made me clear for the thing i wanted to say.

There are two issues here - the legal and the ethical.

Ethically, I agree with you totally. However, legally, recasting of any type, even OOP miniatures, is disallowed and illegal. If GW design something, then that is theirs. Even if they don't ever release it, it is theirs. If someone wanted to create an alternative without using any GW IP then that is fine, but the fact remains that recasting GW IP is illegal, and should not be tolerated or encouraged.

In addition, recasting relies on you taking the word of the recaster as to whether it is an original or a copy - and so you are taking the word of someone who has already copied a design. I am sure that people here would be up front, but I wouldn't trust people outside these boards at all.

Personal experience is that quirky SGs like our own are not the "target" for profiteers - or we would be seeing more Kislev / OOP elite knockoffs in the wild --- rather, judging from the Resin Addict forums - the primary targets for rip off merchants are Forge World copies claiming to be originals for Warhammer 40,000.

There's some pretty shocking stuff there.

Personally i dont agree with re-casting for the purposes of selling the item on, if its for your own use then fine. I'd be mightily annoyed if i bought an obvious re-cast off e-bay and would likely report the seller to both e-bay and GW and demand my money back. Both Man O War and early Epic stuff are well known for re-casts on e-bay, i imagine the intricacy of the warmaster casts deter most amateur re-casters from entering what would a very lucrative market

I'm rather ambivalent about recasting (or conflicted perhaps). I buy figures for gaming rather than collecting (though I do like my gaming collections to be 'complete' and enjoy having rarities in my armies). So, for me the prices I'll pay on ebay (or elsewhere) are based on how much I want a model for its gaming purpose and not for any 'collectible' value.

This said, I can really see Marell's point, were I collecting 'as a collector' I'd be very irritated indeed if I found I'd bought a recast figure.

What I really wish (and I know this is nothing new, and that it won't happen) is that GW would maintain the full range so that I could get what I want easily and (relatively) cheaply. The lengths I've gone to (am going to) in order to get my Kislev army completed are ridiculous!

I did not wanted the subject to deviate to the question of "is recasting good or bad ?".

The point is that every one do what he wants when the question or recastings jump in mind.

What i wanted, and found sufficiently secure to me, is that anybody producing a recast put its own mark,  clearly recognisable, on it.

Recaster producing recasts for their own usage will not found this a problem. And in years, when the stuff will reach ebay or any site, it will be sold for what it is.

Recasters that want to sell their stuff as recasts, just to help people having great stuff, will approve this without any problem. This point of view and market causes no problem to me.

Recaster wanting to make money selling fakes on ebay or anywhere else will just ignore this thread and never post any pictures of their mark. Why loosing time discussing with them ? They know what they do.

This thread assumes to be destined to gentlemen recasters :]
