Airbrushing
« on: January 25, 2010, 04:51:03 PM »
Looking for thoughts and advice on airbrushing figures and scenery. Anyone have any experience with it and how well it works? Also, is the GW airbrush any good or should I look elsewhere?
I've used spray cans previously for undercoating but thinking that an airbrush would be handy for basecoating some figures (Space Marines mainly) and a couple of terrain projects I'm contemplating.

Very useful.  Great for camoflage on vehicles.  great for basecoating and other effects... and potentially for a lot of other stuff as well, but like anything it takes practice to acquire the skills.

Get a double-action airbrush -- Badger or other brand.  GW's is nothing special.

You'll also want to look into getting a compressor of some sort, or some other propellant scheme other than aerosol cans. And a dust-mask/respirator.  As I play around with an airbrush, I get more and more aware of how nice it is not to have to worry about when the air runs out -- not least because it lets me play around and develop skills with the brush... .and because it means that I don't skimp on propellant in cleaning the brush.

Cheers for the pointers. I'm definitely considering a compressor but reckon I'll stick to the aerosol cans to begin with.
After a little bit of research (Thanks Wikipedia) it seems the best choice is a dual action, internal mix airbrush. The feed system I'm less certain about, although I'm inclined to a bottom feed reservoir would suit. All of which lead me here, a bewildering array of products.  ???
As far as I can tell, the AB128 at the top of the page would be ideal. Am I missing anything? Thoughts and input appreciated.
