Kallistra Samurai Size comparison pictures
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:05:41 PM »
Well I bought some of the new Kallistra Samurai range to see if they are close enough scale wise for a Warmaster Nippon army and I think they'll do the job.

First row is Brettonian Men at Arms, Samurai, Araby Spearmen and Copplestone City Guard.
Second row is Brettonian Men at Arms, Ashigaru Bowmen, Copplestone City Archers and Araby Spearmen.
Third row is Brettonian Knights, Samurai Cavalry, Araby Knights, Copplestone Horse Archers.

The Kallistra Samurai are the same height as the Copplestone City Guard but they are broader. I deliberately used Araby figures in the picture as they are out of scale with the rest of the Warmaster range the thicker base makes them about the same height. The only real issue is with the older Warmaster figures as they are a good bit bigger. The Cavalry are less of an issue.

I had ordered Ashigaru with Yari but they sent me 2 Bowmen by mistake. Hope thats of help any questions ask away

wow, they look pretty good! And I am now quite interested in kallistra again, I thought his 10mm historical rank were close to 15mm so... I need to check again their catalogue!

Thanks for sharing

These are heroic scale 12mm their ranges seem to vary wildly in scale I bought some Vikings but they're the size of Ogres! The quality on the Samurai is very good the archers less so the Ashigaru with Yari look better detailed in the website pictures.

Here's some stand to stand pictures.

Thanks for the pics!

I'll be interested to see what you do for the Oni, Tengu, and Temple Dogs!

For the Oni I intend to use Kallistra Trolls. I'll sculpt on horns, wild hair and robes - they already carry clubs. The stats don't suggest anything bigger than a man but I've always thought of Oni as Japanese Ogres. Once it's clear what they are it doesn't really matter what size they are.

The temple dogs will be made using this fu dog.

(Picture should be actual size) Thats a 25mm mini on a 25mm base so The dog should be good size for a monster. I've ordered one I'll cut away the assassin and resculpt the details then cast it (they are a limited edition so I can only get my hands on one)

The Tengu I intend to make from heavily modified Harpies. The new Blood angel kits have suitable feathered wings.

Who offers that figure?  And how did you find it?

I went looking for kallistra ogres, but didn't find them in their store.  Are they listed as Ogres or something else?

Thanks!

My google-fu is strong  8) - I spent 5 or 6 hours one evening researching the army and found it in some forum somewhere. The assassin is from assassin miniatures http://www.assassin.de/Shop/Englisch/index2.html scroll down a bit it's just called "Assassin" I ended up getting one off ebay as I got no response from the guy that runs the site (it's a one man job) when I placed an order.

The Trolls are in the Orcs section code 105 http://www.kallistra.co.uk/.

There's at least 2 are usable maybe 3 I'll leave out the rock thrower. Just add Horns to the forehead and Wild hair with greenstuff paint them red (or blue) and you have ogre type Oni.

Keep an eye on my painting log as I'll be doing some soon.

I'd say that they're definately too big for direct scale comparison. No reason not to do the army though, I've had my 10mm EIR army face off against 6mm Summerians and 15mm Greek Phalanx blocks. So whilst Warmaster is a 10mm game, if it's a choice of not doing something because it's slightly out of scale, or doing it and living with the scale issues, I say sod the scale issues.

That is not to say that I want any new stuff from GW to be 15mm, far from it. I think that 10mm is the ideal scale really, small enough for real mass-effect, yet big enough to get some real character detail on the models so that you can actually tell the difference between a HE and a CW from a metre away (once painted of course).

Couldn't agree more Stomm I love the 10mm scale of the original Warmaster minis but scale creep set in and Araby are noticably bigger than the early stuff but as you say slightly out of scale is better than nothing at all and while I'm not happy that the Samurai are a bit big I can live with it as they are well detailed which is where some other ranges that are closer to 10mm suffer.

I received my Fu dog here's a picture with a base for scale:

2 will fit on one base but I might leave it to 1 per base.

Nice to see you back on the WM stuff Dave.
Scale differences really bug me.
But once the models are painted and on bases the differences are very hard to see.
I look forward to seeing this army completed.

What points size are you aiming at and do you have an approximate total cost yet?

Nice to see you back on the WM stuff Dave.

Never left, just didn't have anything to say really. I haven't played any WM in a long, long time now, largely because my local opponent has now got a WMA German army and t be honest I much prefer WMA as a game to WM, it's a more satisfying game with less rules changes, inconsistencies and inbalances.

Of course recently my focus has been on WH, but I do have a WMA game lined up in two week's time and am thinking of going to the HW weekend in mid-October for some WMA action...

I'm also still toying with the idea of running a WM one-day tournie in London. Our new club venue is available on Sundays, and since we can use the whole hall we could quite happily fit a ten player Warmaster tournie alongside a twenty player Warhammer tournie. If anyone is interested and has a prefered slot in the calendar then let me know...

Ahh too many Daves!!!  ;D

Aiming for 2000 - 2500 pts. I've spent £127 to date and have 2000 points worth but I'll need some more units and some basing stuff that a don't normally use (red lichen) and modelling supplies. I have a shrine to build and a Dragonne to convert though that's not part of my 2000 point army, so I reckon another £40 to £50 will finish it.

Yes, too many, my comment was aimed at Dave C, but nice to have you back too Stomm  ;D

That looks like a very reasonable price for a very nice army.
Must resist starting a nippon army ;)

Well my surname is Simpson, so the Doh! in this instance is quite apt I think.

I'll have to get some shots of my EIR stuff sorted out when I've actually got something worth showing. My building and painting is basically game-led, so whatever game I've got lined up for the next club night is what I try to paint or assemble stuff for. It seems to be quite a nice way to get a bit of focus, even if I haven't 'actually' finished anything in a very long while...
