Starting with the undead...
« on: September 12, 2010, 11:12:12 PM »
Hi all, I'm about to make a trade with someone for the following Undead units and wonder if any of you experienced Undead generals could suggest a decent 2000 pt list I can make with it (and any necessary purchases to bulk it out).

here's what I'm hoping will come in the post:

Carrion x2
Undead Skeletons x6
Bowmen x3
Bone Throwers x1
Skull Chukka x3
Sphinx x2
Bone Giant x2
Cavalry x6
Chariots x3
Zombie Dragon x1
Loads of characters

you need max chariots and max skull chukkas.
These are very effective, also make sure you take max characters to keep the force moving.
I find the rest of the army to be less than effective, but a couple of big monsters can be a distraction for an inexperienced opponent.
I always take equal bowmen to warriors to protect my artillery as well.

Then just make sure you can get raise dead off in his rear when you charge and watch his army crumble :)

All this said, my record with TK is about 33.3:66.6 ratio of win to loss.
But when I found a winning formula my regular opponent threatened to stop playing after his third game being wiped out :)

The most effective army set up I noticed (according to my experience) is following one.

General
4 Liech Preast (1 Dragon)
6 Units Chariots
2 Units Carrions.
10 Units Skelettons
7 Units Skeleton Archers

Breakpoint 13.

Anyway Tomb Kings require a very specific play stile .... which does not make it very easy when starting witht this army....you need to get used ot it ;)

From time to time I also use the Sphinx and Bone Giant and rarely the Skull Chukka....but I think they are not effective in games till 2.000 pts (just my personal opinion on this  ::)  )

I've yet to get the trick with Undead, so my army is in planning stages.  That said, thinking it through: Cavalry is still king of the battlefield. Chariots are nice, flashy units, but TK cavalry and TK Carrion are cheap and very effective.

TK Cavalry is actually quite nice for its price; not quite as nice as Chaos dogs, but still very nice. In theory, two of them can deal out 18 attacks on a 12cm frontage i.e. on a single hapless infantry unit. All told, these two units cost 10 points more than the single unit of Chariots.

So perhaps 3 cadillacs and 6 cavalry is not so bad to start.

;D
Watch 'em crumble before your eyes!
Trust me.
Sure take cav but not at the cost to chariots.

@Carrington

You will pretty soon notice that 110 pts for 1 chariot unit dishing out 15 attacks on a 6cm frontage is far more effective then the 120 points for 2 units that are dishing out 18 attacks on a 12cm frontage.

Don´t forget the shooting ability of chariots which helps you to concentrate your firepower at close range.

At least this is my experience  ;D

From time to time I also use 2 to max 3 Cavalry units but only for doing early charges on week points and to cast the "RAISE DED" spell to get a free unit in close combat.

I guess the counterpoint, particularly with Undead: every thing has to be ordered forward. I only get one command roll to move the Chariots forward. With the Cavalry I get two tries.

@Carrington.

I see it the other way round.

More units means that I have to do more commands which will increase the chance to fail one of them and till 2.000 pts you are limited to 4 Liechs and 1 General....which you really need to do all the commands.

But it´s your army and your playstile.....don´t listen to much on what I write ;).....everyone has different playing style and there is often more then one way to succceed.    :)

You're right, Claus, I confused myself: the four LPs are probably too thin on the ground to be able to afford the orcs' 'winsomelosesome' command style.

Which is particularly tough because of the lack of initiative.
