Bretonnian Knights advancing into new combat.
« on: September 13, 2010, 02:40:25 PM »
Do Bretonnian Knights have to advance?

Reason i ask is, it says they must charge. But it says nothing about advancing.
In the book the advance gains charge bonuses. So does this mean they must always advance if they can?

No, they don´t need.
If you read their rule once more you will see that it is stated that "they must charge on initiative if they can do so"
Advancing is no initiative move !!

It is specifically stated at each unit type who has to advance in new combat (Flaggellants, Witch Elves, Troll Slayer ....etc.)

Sorry for bringing this question up again, but i read something last night that i've never seen before.

I found a section in the rules that suggests Bretonnian Knights, and anything else that has to charge also has to advance.

Page 44, bottom left, just under the illustration of the empire knights..... "A victorious unit does not have to advance if the player doesn't want it to unless the unit is normally obliged to charge enemies where possible because of a special rule, in which case it must."

So, (unless this has been changed with an FAQ) that means Bretonnian knights always have to advance. Same goes for witch elves, flagellants....

Also if an ogre unit wipes out a unit of empire halberdiers and there's another one within 5cm. The ogres have to advance into them. (or any other human unit)

What do you think?

Units need to advance only if this is clearly stated by the rules. Have a look at the rules of Empire Flagellants or Dwarf Troll Slayers and compare to Bretonnian Knights.
Or in other words Bretonnian Knights have to charge out of initiative but need not advance.
