Rule Questions and Surprises!
« on: January 08, 2011, 06:30:41 PM »
I have been playing a few test games with my wife (Dwarves v. HE) and rereading the rules in preparation for the tournament in Dover next week.

One thing that caught my eye, and made me realize I have been making a big error since the game came out, is that in brigade orders, you measure the command distence from the most distent unit in the brigade, not any unit.  :'(

Opps.

---

Any rules mistakes other people have noticed on a reread of the rules?

Any odd ball questions?

One thing that amuses me is how firmly the rules state infantry can't pursue horsemen or nothing but flyers can pursue flyers... you would think a footnote would be inserted mention that rangers can...

Yes, that rule will catch you off guard.  To establish the command distance, measure from the hero to the closest stand of the farthest unit.

Other surprises:

Flyers can not be given an order by any hero if the flyer is more than 20 cm from a hero.

You don't have to use all of your movement when moving a unit or brigade.

If you are to the front of a unit, and all your unit can get access to is the flank edge, then your charge goes to the flank.

 ??? ??? Are you sure?

I think the attacking unit should be in the "flank zone". If the attaking unit is in fornt you should give 2 orders, one to go to the "flank zone" and another to attack. (I think so...)

Yes, I am sure.

You are right about flank charges if the unit receiving a charge has not yet been charged.

But here is a diagram explaining how this is allowed under the rules:

I hope the diagram helps explain!

Is this how other people play this? I'd have gone for the corner-to-corner contact. If this is right then flank charges are a lot easier than I thought.

Once pinned, and the charging stand MUST be able to draw LOS, and be able to make the distance, but yeah....

Pin the unit, make sure you do NOT hav eit show ANY free frontage, and slamdunk

Is a corner counted as frontage in the above diagram? It looks like it could be 'seen' if there's no overhang from the other unit.

I am pretty sure that the rules state that corner-to-corner contact is not suffcient contact when charging.  The rules state that you have to get edge-to-edge contact in order to complete the charge.

Correct !!! ..

One more thing concerning this to take into account......

When making contact the charging unit has to bring as much enemy frontage in contact as possible, when a stand has sufficient move  to make full frontal contact (and bring in contact with an aditional enemy unit) it HAS to do so !!

When stands can not make their move into contact, but could be placed "adjacent" to an already placed stand (thus providing support) is is also acceptable to put the stand BEHIND the "supported" stand.

There is NO rule that forces you to end up with your charing unit in a LINE formation.......  ::)

Also one thing to allways keep in mind.

Legal charges force you to establish at least 1cm base to base contact with the unit you want to charge.
If you are not able to do so....you are not allowed to charge.

Cheers

What is really interesting in this discussion is that if the front (OR ANY OTHER VALID ZONE) is covered by enemy units (i.e. friendly to target), the charge is not allowed at all. This is the situation often misleading the players.
In other words friendly unit (to the attacked one) cannot make the unit pinned.

A corner is a corner, it is not a frontage, be it front, flank or rear. You cannot charge a corner.

I'm not going to add any diagrams, but will try to explain.

Say for example in the diagram that has been posted that the flanking unit consisted of only one stand, and that there was a third enemy unit that wished to charge and that it could only see the corner of the enemy unit between the two friendly units. In fact it cannot see said corner, as it in game terms occupies no space, has no facing and so on, is merely a reference point. So, said unit would not be able to charge.
