Storage Ideas
« on: February 13, 2011, 06:27:54 PM »
I've gotten a few more units painted up now, and am starting to see that I need a good way to store these so that they stay nice.  Any suggestions for storage?  I'm thinking of a foam case of some kind - not sure if that is best or not.

I use (clean) pizza hut card-boxes. They were quite well in high and has a lot of surface. Indeed you could storage your armis in three categories: small, medium or familiar.

Note: if you are using familiar size ones, don't forget to keep the little plastic stuff to avoid the pizza get smashed during the transport (do you know the stuff I  mean?)

I use A4 box files.
You can get about 2000 points of a force in them.
You can use steel sheeting and magnetic bases to ensure no movement occurs (not for me ;))
I have about 40 of these tucked away in a cupboard.
For going to events/tournaments I use a generic carry case from my FLGS with foam inners.
I tried the KR stuff and found it a bit too flimsy.

Our club is going the way of KR almost all the way. I think that at least 50% now use KR cases, and the other 50% are seriously thinking about it.

I still use an old Army Transport case for my WMF, and a GW case for my WMA. But I will in due course be switching to KR for those as well as for the WH that I'm already using it for, and 40K which I will once I 're-engage' with that game with the Grey Knights release.

Talking of re-engaging. Anyone fancy a WMF one-dayer mid-May? March and April are a no-go for me due to time and other gaming commitments, early May is probably a bad idea due to the Bank Holidays, so maybe the 15th or 27th?

We've got enough space for twenty tables if needs be, and yes I know I've been promising this for an age. I need to speak to the venue soon anyway, so I can find out if these two Sundays are available and should hopefully confirm a booking by the end of the week.

Thanks for the ideas - will have to give them all a look.  I have access to Sabol Army Transports for a decent price - does anyone have experience with that product?  Thanks!

I use cookie tins.  When I told my family I wanted rectangular cookie tins, they almost immediately provided me with lots of them!  They were picked up a flea markets, mostly.

Then stack well, and are crush-proof.  I put magnets on the bases of my figures to hold the miniatures in.

If those are the large soft skinned case that I've been using for my Warmaster figures for the last ten years or so, then it's not too bad. The pick and pluck foam can or does fall apart though, and its also rather rigid, I've had the wings of my griffon fall off many, many times.

KR foam by comparison really is rather great. They have a 'soft foam, hard case' system, which means that the foam is nice and soft with plenty of 'give' in it so as not to continually knock those White Wolf standards off, etc... If you use half trays then that also ought to deal with rigidity problems, a full tray of lead models will flop all over the place that is true.

Like Stomm, I use KR cases for most of my figures. I don't think they're quite as good as the GW cases for protection but they're cheaper and they look nice and innocuous when stacked on the bookshelves, in addition to taking up less space. I think that the games room looks nicer for the reduction in big black plastic boxes and for this reason, and the fact that I usually play at home (minimising the need for rugged figure transportation) they're my storage box of choice.

All my KR stuff is in a black bag in the garage.
Might have to sort it out and flog it.

I've only got one of the cardboard KR cases, and that was because I changed my WH army about a bit so needed more infantry compartments. Going to the club and to events I use the KR double aluminium, which looks dead swanky in its black shinyness. My regular WM & WMA opponent uses a single aluminium, as well WM and WMA armies don't take up anywhere near as much space as even a small WH or 40K army now do they?

Anyway, I've dropped my KR case a few times on it's side and so on. So far no damage to any of the models inside, despite there being a mix of pewter, lead and plastic in my WH army. I imagine that your average WM or WMA army would be very well protected indeed. You can get extra deep trays that are perfect for cavalry for example, just figure out the depth of your tallest banner, etc... and there you go, that's what you need...

You can use steel sheeting
Where do you get your steel sheets from Azrael?

That's a great idea with the box files, is it easy to glue a steel sheet to the inside of the box file?

I don't but it is on list of things to do.
Although living in steel city I should be able to source a few when I can face magnetizing all those bases :(

someone posted this over on warseer.
http://www.magneticdisplays.co.uk/magdisp4.asp

These are the boxfiles I use but I buy them for £2 each from a thrift store (minus steel/magnetic paper).
But for 40 boxes plus magnetic tape I could buy the best part fo 2k araby force :)

I knocked this up this morning.
1 roll of magnetic tape (20mm wide, but 15mm may do)
1 old PC case
6 pieces of same dimension polystyrene
1 A4 box file

This allows for 2 layers of models thereby allowing you to get the majority of a 3k warmaster army in one box :)

Like I said, it will still cost me a small fortune to do this with my warmaster armies, but I think it is going to have to be done.
