Something Different
« on: February 15, 2011, 12:46:00 AM »
I was painting up my third unit of Spearmen from the stuff that I received a while back, and these seem to be a different casting.  I will post pictures below, but on two of the strips one of the Spearmen has been hit by an arrow and is falling down.  Anyone know what these are?  All of my other spearmen look alike, but these ones are different.  I also did not have a command stand for these guys, so I used some figures from a Characters pack.  Anyway - the visual evidence:

I always see something to touch up when I post these big pictures...better get out the Mithril and fix that guys helm.

IIRC there are three different HE SM strips, not counting the two different command strips. This is the common format for the infantry units in the original armies, 3-4 different R&F strips and two or sometimes three command strips. Its only really towards the end of the Fanatic releases that you saw the in-unit variety reduce to two strips and only one command. In the DE's they added the potential for variety by making the strips divisible, so that you could mix strips up a bit.

After drilling out the spears on all my spearmen I'm rather familiar with the three different strips. :P

There's the one you have pictured, with an elf taking an arrow out of his chest (and the elf next to him looking at him with an "oh crap!" expression).

Another with an elf without a helmet towards the center.

And another with an elf separate from all the rest on the right hand side.

I'm going to be laughing to myself every time I paint one of those strips now.

I've got a few more Spearmen units to finish up - I'll be chuckling as well every time I see that poor bloke with gastro problems off by himself.  I just happened to receive another unit with the shot elf in it as well from an eBay buy - so it looks like I have more arrows to paint.  Thanks for the information guys, I had not seen this strip in the other Spearmen units I have painted up (3 for myself now, and a further 3 done by others).

Interesting ! I did not know there was several HE spearmen strips.

Could someone post a good picture of each strip ? We will add them to the OOP section.

This is the unit that I received in a lot purchase - they had a different command strip as well - the last unit did not have the command strip as a throw in on another purchase.  Here are the four strips that I have with this unit:

Command Strip

Wounded Elf

Elf who forgot his helmet

Elf with body odor...it almost looks like he's seen the horde of Chaos coming at him and is trying to duck out of line...

Hope this helps!

I may have found an exception?

I have 6 packs of Black Orcs and the only variants in them are 1 command strip and 1 'rankers' strip.
Please tell me that I haven't been the unluckiest man in the world and missed out on another type of Black Orc 'rankers' strip?

I may try to cut the rear rank up to mix the order round a bit in half the units otherwise a brigade of Black Orcs in column could look very samey.

I'm pretty sure there's 3 Black Orc rank strips as well Dave. Going from the left hand Orc's weapon, there's a Bill, Club/Morning Star and Axe.

There's only one command strip though. I ended up making another using the Orc Character's pack and a spare Rock Lobber crew.

On the High Elves - do they still make the command strip like that and wounded elf strips?

From memory, there's also a High Elf command strip with a horse in the middle.
