Yes Carrington carrion also seems that the figures fit better based in long frontal. And, as I see in the pictures of the Games workshop page, Screamers flyers of the demon army too. Egales from Bofa are base also in long frontal, making a different with high elves eagles
but the way of basing makes a different in terms of gameplay and I can not find in the rules these exceptions. I thought that flying units always were base in short frontal.
Is there a norm to base flying units?
How do you base them or how are spected to be based in the tournaments?
It's a perennial problem with miniatures -- getting the darned minis to rank up properly. Carrion and Elf eagles are good examples of figures that don't rank up that well. I think bats are based on the long side, though, like harpies.
Actually, my thought was simply to allow one 40x60 base represent the entire unit, basically on the theory that they die quickly... and worst come to worst, I can use blank bases to represent a formation that has taken losses or become disordered.
Another thought was simply to use 2" by 1" bases and play using a 2cm=1" conversion. I've almost got enough elves to mount a separate army on the larger bases...
Bottom line, I have to wonder whether the hassle of 3-base units is worth the game-benefit: Impetus and the various napoleonic systems seem to have the right idea with 3" bases for one maneuver unit -- allows for some nice based dioramas, and strikes some complicated rules about formations, pursuit, etc.
