Play by Post

Hey guys, new user here. I have been intrigued by Warmaster Fantasy, and have started playing solo to get myself into the rules. Also, playing against others online by forum seems to really work for me. So, I was wondering if somebody would be interested in trying a play by post game using Battle Chronicler? I am used to it so can give out pointers if needed. Here is an example shot of a solo game I am playing (Empire v. High Elfs 1000 Points) using Battle Chronicler [major grid lines are 20cm]:

You can also check out a WHFB game I am playing on the Ogre Stronghold: http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=22346.0

You can download the linked XML files there, and open them in Battle Chronicler (working as a saved game).

Seeing as how I am new to the game, I am looking for something at ~1000 Points and without either side having much in the way of Wizards, Warmachines, Flyers, or Monsters. I live in the East Coast of the US, so would be posting at least once a day, between about 7pm and 10pm on weekdays, with more posts being possible on weekends.

Sounds very interesting to me. I am tempted to try a game. But I'm totally unaware of how to use Battle Chronicler...

A note about the woods. I propose you change them a bit. Going after the rules the cavalry unit R1 is not allowed to enter the wood/tree as it does at B3/4. I would change the graphics by putting together some trees to form a wood, maybe even design a clearly defined brown (?) area around them so that everybody knows where a wood begins and where it ends.

Greetings,

Ah, the trees. In this game I am using the trees as decoration, looks much nicer that way. All the other terrain is 'real', but there are no 'woods' on the map, would have made them larger if so.

There is no rush, Battle Chronicler is meant for battle reports, but the flow of it is just like playing a game. If you feel up to it you can always fool around with it a bit and send me an email when you think you're ready.

A pointer for Warmaster in it though. Battle Chronicler seems to have been made with WHFB in mind, but there is a way to get good Warmaster unit control. When you are creating units, make one unit composed of 3 'Models' each 40mmx20mm, or the other way 'round if appropriate, and set their 'Formation' to 'Loose' instead of 'Tight'. This way when you zoom in, you can reposition each stand easily, or move them all at once by clicking and holding on the arrow. Much easier than always having to move each stand individually.

I too would happily give this a try.  I've used Battle Chronicler for reports before  - http://sg.tacticalwargames.net/forum/index.php?topic=1984.0 so I know my way around it.

And while I always thought it could be used for PBEM style games, I haven't tried it in that way.

Ok Doob, I will make a post in this forum for our game, let's do 1000 Points, I will just use a simple empire army.

Unfortunately it is Windows only. However, I am actually using it on Linux, by way of running Windows XP on VirtualBox, which is also available for Macs. You will need at least Windows XP Service Pack 3 to run Battle Chronicler I think, but that also happens to be the best for a VirtualBox machine, as it will not take up as many resources as newer versions of Windows.

Another Mac-friendly option would be Vassal (if anyone has built a module for it, or has the time to do so). It's also playable 'live' online which might be handy.

I have fooled around with it, but found that I just prefer Play by Post or Play by Email.
