Tale of Warmaster Painters III (January)
« on: December 31, 2011, 09:10:36 PM »
Hi All and welcome to the third Tale of Warmaster Painters! Thanks to Tristan for suggesting this, I for one need all the encouragement that I can get and I'm looking really forward to the next assault on the pile of unpainted lead.

What rules shall we have? I'd suggest that the tale runs for six months like the last two (though this might be too long?), that everyone introduce themselves, their armies, and their weekly/monthly goals in this thread and that we take it from there.

Best of luck everyone...

I'll go first, aware that posting now confirms that my New Year's Eve isn't very exciting (though I have just made myself a very nice coffee).

I'm going to return to the Talabheim army with which I began the first tale, here's the best picture I can find of where things are at the moment:

Since that pic was taken I've added a second wizard, a hero on a griffon, a second unit of cannons and another unit of knights. I'll set them out for a picture as soon as I can.

I'm planning to add:
2 x Knights
4 x Halberdiers
2 x Crossbows
2 x Flagellants
2 x Pistoliers
----------------------------
3 (bases of) Skirmishers
Helblaster
War Altar
Valten
Karl Franz

My aim is to get two units from the first section of the list painted per month and, if things go to plan, something from the second half to show when the 'proper' unit are going slowly. For me this is madly ambitious.

First up, a unit of knights. Why? Because they are one of the easiest of the 'proper' units and I want to start with a win!

Hello,
I am planning on starting and finishing one of my remaining 3 armies in the next 6 months.
I see a few are planning on kislev so I may plump for Araby or Brets to keep it interesting (but then again may not ;)).
I am however in the middle of painting up my Menoth warmachine force as well, so this may slow me down from my usual frenetic pace ;)

I will list what I am painting when I can make my mind up and the first few weeks will of course be prep work.

Here's the list of figures I plan on painting: they are for my friends Kislev army, and my personal goal is to have them all finished in time for an event I am planning in March.

Tzarina
3x Wizard
6xHero
-----------------------------
4x Kislev Bowmen
6x Kislev Axemen
3x Bears
1x War Wagon
7x Kislev Lancers
7x Kislev Horse Archers

I just picked up a tripod for my camera, so I should be able to post photos of the bare figs soon...

After a internal struggle for the decision about kislev or Chrisitian kingdoms (for WMM) I decide Christian kingdoms army.

Christian kingdom is based in El Cid army of WMM but like a century after, situated in the spanish crusade to confront the almohade army.

My idea is get a core of european medieval troops to use from X to XIV centries (being not too extrict) and could expand it easly to play other list of this period painting only 5 units each. Also it could let me play bretonians in fantasy.

Christian kingdom list is made in the scope of the battle of las Navas de Tolosa 1212, a very important battle in spanish floor.

Chrisitan kingdoms army is a alliance of three spanish kings in one army, King Alfonso VIII of Castille,   King Sancho VII of Navarre and   King Alfonso IX of Leon.   So the army will have 3 command, King Alfonso VIII of Castilla will be the general, it takes an important role in the battle because he lead the final assault to the almohade campament, making the moorish army flee. Also this character is peculiar because written sources tell that he was a giant. The remains found in his tomb nowdays confirm he suffer a sort of genetic disease called gigantisim. So I do not know if or how I will represent this. Maybe with a 15mm figure.

The list is that follows:

Vanguard:- Templars (knights of santiago). Already painted.
- Templars (Order from Calatrava)
- Military orders (templars on foot) (Order San Juan de Malta).
- Mounted Crossbowmen. I have an already painted mounted crossbowmen but from XV centry. So I will use that until I buy a more accurate moutned crossbowmen

Center:
center:
- Castellian Nobles. kinghts
- Jinetes. light cavalry with missile
- Castellian infantry
- Archers

left wing:
- Mesanda aragonesa.  nobles
- Jinetes
- Aragonese infantry

right wing:
- Mesanda navarre. nobles
- Vasque light cavalry
- Navarre infantry

- 3 commands. Chronicles are written by the Bishop from Toledo. Could be great to make a subordinate, but do not deceided yet

- Maybe a medieval campament, with tents, horse and these stuff

Some inspiration images about the army:

OK.... aftermuch delibiration (and some messy negotiations with the Missus) I will try and join inon this tale again. Instead of creating a new army, my youngest spawn and myself will be creating loads and loads (well hopefully) of Warmaster terrain over the next months, with themes varying from desert to jungle and from coastallowlands to highmountain valleys.

And to top the endavour off, we will finalize the tale in june with a brand new set of terrain rules for Warmaster......    8)

Hi

I have a few armies that are lying around in various stages of completion - from goblins who need two giants finished off (really boring to paint for some reason), elves that have 4 knights left, and an entire chaos army... and a lizardman army to collect the blisters for and paint. My daughter has been asking to play with daddy's toys!  ;)

So, first up on the painting block for the month is the 4 elf knights. Next goal is to finish off the giants in February, and start in on Chaos in March.

I did get Space Hulk for Christmas... so I might delay things a month here and there for that....  oh look something shiny...  8)

I'll join in with my High Elves, as I'm hoping to finish them in the coming months. I have the following left:

4 Spearmen
2 Reavers
2 Silver Helms
1 Dragon Rider
2 Eagles
1 General
3 Heroes
3 Wizards

The Spearmen are partially done, I'm hoping to finish those up before 1/21 and Ed's WM game day.

@jchaos79 - sounds great. As for Alphonso VIII, just how big was he? Perhaps the 'Famous Familiar' knight might be ok, he looks like this:

Of course, that depends on if he wore armour... And had a massive sword! The base is 20mm to give an idea of scale, he's a bit bigger than a WM Ogre so probably too big. If he looks even vaguely useful I can take a picture of him next to some WM figures (I bought one to use in my chaos army but you'd be welcome to have him).

Or, perhaps a more likely suggestion might be to get something from Kallistra, aren't they meant to be rather large (12mm)?

@Lex: that's a great idea for the tale. I've been thinking about doing something similar and hope to smallerizeTM some of the existing Warhammer terrain once my Empire are done, I really look forward to seeing what you come up with.

@pw, the figure is great but too much fantasy style for the army I'm planning. Alphonso VIII is the dude on horse reproduce in both pictures posted. Full metal armour appear in century XV and XVI. Kallistra seems a good alternative, thanks.

@Lex, rules for terrain that will be much appreciated

@jchaos79: I thought that would be the case. Let's hope Kallistra have something good. Which manufacturer are you planning to use for the rest of the army?

Well, here it is my first update: A unit of templar knights, order of Calatrava. They are shock cavalry and are knights, so they have a great attack.

As they are military orders I choose the scheme of white, black and red. When I painted the other unit before the Tale I went for white color scheme, so this unit I had gone for red/black tones to differenciate the units

The other unit

Good looking knights jchaos79.

I'll be joining with some Orcs and Goblins, as well as some Dwarfs later on. I'll post a list of my planned painting when I'm back closer to my models.
I'll be aiming for 1-2 units a month- yes, that's pretty poor but I am a very slow painter and have many other life issues to get sorted at the moment (eg. unemployment and possible relocation for job seeking). Hopefully I can do better than this, but I'd prefer a goal I should be able to achieve come-what-may.

I thought I might be first with these but I see I've been beaten to it by jchaos! Nice knight there. Here are mine:

Next up it'll be either a unit of Halberdiers or, if things go as expected rather than as hoped, Mini-Valten who I've just based up. Here he is standing on a pile of skeletons he pilfered from some passing Tomb Kings!

In other news, I've just been given the marvellous gift of some Kislev units, this lot I think: Horse archers x 1, Steppe horse archers x1, Kislev archers x1, Characters x1, Kislev bears x1, Axe men x2, Kislev knights x2. These chaps may well feature in this army blog as an allied contingent (until I get more I'm thinking I might be able to use them as stand-in Empire troops to add a little sparkle to my army). It's a happy day!
