New Chaos Army
« on: February 01, 2012, 03:35:22 AM »
So, at Ed's event in Dover New Hampshire last month, I ended up buying a bunch of chaos figures. After the event, I gave my painted Chaos army to my friend Larry, who had played his first games there. This leaves me with a newly unpainted army - which is like a blank canvas...

So I have decided to go with a Nurgle theme this time, and I want to go very heavy with conversion work and even some scratch build sculpting!

I was doing some searching when I came across this photo:

Someone named Ben Komets did this piece, and I love it! I think it would work very well as a hero for Warmaster.

So this will be my first scratch build for the army, and I will try to do it step by step.

Next step will be to sculpt the rocks...

Hey, Lex - that's actually supposed to be gray.  It's plastic sprue bits.  The camera just makes them look kinda blue...

First up, I salute your ambition, that's a very cool idea to copy.
It'd be no way near as much fun, but isn't there a Chaos Juggernaut in the Chaos Daemon's character pack? Probably not as big as this thing looks.

On a very dull note (that's me  :-\) perhaps coins with smooth edges would look nicer! The British two pence coin is without peer!

Hahaha - I had to go and look. There is a juggernaut in the chaos demons set...  but it looks like the older style juggernaut, not the new and fancy looking one.  (I think it even looks a bit stubby)

As to the coin thing, I agree, but there are no smooth sided quarters in the US - so I've always just accepted it as such.  I'll maybe have to look st some exchange rates at the bank next time...

1" fender washers are cheaper and readily available in the US though :P. Also, assuming your opponent is willing to allow you the extra .2mm in radius it's a legal 25mm character base. Looks good Tristan!

Yeah, but if I use washers instead of coins, I cut down on the bling factor!  I have vague ambitions to be the Mitt Romney of Warmaster... wanna bet $10,000.00 that I can get this sculpted?  :P

I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out. My only minor comment so far is that the legs look like they'll end up too long- unless you're planning on sculpting the rocks higher or body fatter. I also like the sprue idea.

It looks like you're planning to sculpt the head, but if not, the gun bits from the chaos vehicle sprue might be useful:

@ PW: I hadn't thought of that - I'll have to look at that bit - though I do want to see if I can do a good enough job sculpting it first....

@ Geep: I do plan on both, actually - building the rocks up a little and bulking out the body quite a bit. Whenever I scratch build something, it seems like I always need more height and more sculpting space than it feels like I should.

I sculpted the rocks last night, but as rocks are just rocks, I didn't bother with in-progress shots. I should start getting into the meat of the sculpting pretty soon...

Oh wow - I'm amazed by the idea of sculpting at this scale...

I'm afraid that the Chaos vehicle heads would IMHO be too big for something that size - even the smallest one is almost too big for what I use them for:

Replacement gun barrels for plastic melta guns for my space wolves - which means the proper gun barrels can be re used as combi melta parts.
