2,500 pnts Orcs v Bretonnian (with added cards)
« on: February 25, 2012, 11:08:28 AM »
I've not used my warmaster Orc army yet this year, i've been battling with my WM Dark Elves for the past few months. I felt it was time to get the Orcs out and smash some heads.  ;D

I had an idea i wanted to try out. I bought myself 200 blank cards, and made them into gaming cards for warmaster (various things like...scouting, combat cards, inspired leadership from characters) Both players get the same benefit. My friend was happy to give them a go.

Here's my experimental rules for the cards;
- There's 3 types of cards...... Deployment, Tactical and Leadership.
- At the start of the game each player gets one of each (random draw)
- You can play as many cards as you like in a turn
- Each player can canel the effects of a single card once in the whole game
- At the start of turn 2 onwards each player may draw one random card from the Tactical or Leadership deck.

Rather than explain the decks, here's a photo of the cards. Some are better than others, if you get a bad card it's unlucky  :)

I won the roll and chose to deploy my whole army first, and get the first turn.

For our deployment cards i chose 2 troll units to come on as flanking units (turn 2 if i roll 5+ they appear, turn 3= 4+  ,etc)
My opponent could rearrange two of his brigades due to scouting. He chose not to.

My army was;

Orc General
4 Orc Heroes
1 Orc Shaman
2 Goblin Shamans (one has rod of repetition)

4 units Orc Warriors
5 units Goblins
2 units Trolls
2 units Giants
2 units Rock Lobbers
6 units Wolf Chariots
4 units Boar Riders (one unit has sword of cleaving, one unit has sword of destruction)

25 units....... Break point of 13 units

Deployment;

my left flank;

Centre (this is before i took the trolls out as flanking units)

Bretonnian Deployment

Lefthand side of the table (from my point of view)

Right

As you can see the Bretonnian army was a mix of tons of infantry (i think there's a few more units in between my 2 photos) and 7 units of Knights, and 2 units of Grail Knights.
Their break point was 5 (only knights count)

This is the first game i've used 2 giants. I've tried one giant before, but he put me off when he started throwing rocks at my orcs and charging my own units. I've got 5 giants, so i was determined to make them work.

My tactics with the giants were going to be;
- Brigade them together. It'll mean they don't have line of sight to each other, so they won't beat each other up.
- Deploy them near the centre of the table, so the nearest table edge is behind them (or infront if i get over half way) As long as i don't put any of my units directly infront/ behind the giants i should be okay.
- Keep all the units that are within LOS at least 21cm away (this means i'll have to roll a 5 or 6 if they decide to throw rocks at my troops)

I move my giants once, then fail on the 2nd roll. Rolling on the "oh no, what's he up to now" chart.....One of the giants charges forward, the others charges towards the nearest enemy, narrowly missing the other giant (that was close)  ;)
Just out of the picture (bottom left) there's a brigade of chariots that fails to move

The centre

My right Flank moves right up

For spells i disrupt his knights by pushing them back with the Gerrofff! spell. Some of the knights leave the battlefield, then come back on his turn.

On his turn there's a huge battle with many units of cavalry near the elf stones
I lose a few units. This pic is in my turn when i counter-charge him

In the centre i'm moving up, and pivoting my Rock Lobbers so they can fire at Bretonnian Knights.
Both my giants charge into 3 units of infantry. One of the giants went wild, gave a might bellow and started jumping up and down on the poor humans.

Further back i'm moving my chariot brigade to a better position. If they had moved forward they'd be facing a few units of Knights, i didn't like those odds.

Rock Lobbers are successfully seperating his brigades and smashing into Knights

Here's a shot of most of the table (there's a few of my orc units missing top left)

I've taken down many of his knights, things are looking great for the orcs  ;D

A huge charge by the Bretonnians. You can just see those knights eyeing up my giants at the top of the picture

The carnage of the right flank

Far left, a big line of squires gallop forward and fire their bows at my wolf chariots. In my turn i manage to charge a few units in. This leaves only one stand from his squires. Two of chariot units are badly wounded, only 1 stand left in each....... and there's a big brigade of Knights on the hill.

My trolls appear on the right flank!!  ;D I decide to put them near the house. Those troops behind the trolls are his dead pile

The giants have easily destroyed all the infantry units before them, without becomming badly hurt. I charged a solitary stand of infantry with the intention of then advancing into his knights, but the closest unit was another infantry unit. If i had charged them i would have been too close to his knights, so i took a few steps back with both my giants.

Interlude
Here's the rest of the Hall. Almost everyone else was playing games of 40k, they were practising for a doubles tournament the next day

The charge of the Bretonnian Knights against my two giants.......

Bretonnian archers moved by initiative and charged my giant, but he blocked his own path a little bit. The Knights hit harder and don't suffer from terror, the infantry stand near the top would have been better as a support stand. I positioned the other giant close to the woods so he couldn't get the whole unit of Grail Knights attacking me. (at the time i thought it was clever. But this would end up being my downfall)

The giant on the right falls....

Those infantry advance into the other giant...

Somehow that giant survives the attacks, and kills a Grail Knight. But loses the combat overall.
I think i did this correct..... i told my friend because the giant has to move directly away from the unit with most stands the giant has to move into the woods. The woods are impassable to monsters, so the giant is destroyed

(even if we did it wrong, the giant was badly injured and the Grail Knights would have killed him next round)

I'm charged on all sides. But somehow i win this combat, turn on the archers and stomp them to the ground

On my left flank his knights didn't quite manage to charge my chariots. In the turn before i moved my orcs into the woods. Now he's caught in a trap. I throw everything i can at his Knights, including tactics cards, and some Waaagh spells

This is the outcome. My orc infantry can't pursue his cavalry so they retreat to the woods. I've left a stand sticking out so his knights have to charge me, but if they win by one he won't be able to pursue me (cavalry can't go inside woods)
The wolf chariots attempted to destroy that orange unit of knights, but couldn't quite manage it.
If i had killed those orange knights i would have won the game

On the far right a single stand of Bretonnian Knights has to charge my trolls on a hill. I win, but can't pursue.
This photo is the turn before, i kill all those infantry at the bottom of the screen, then turn my trolls and chariots around.
In his turn he charges with those squires and kills 2 stands of trolls.
In the last turn i flank charge his single knight stand with 3 troll stands. I kill that knight, and that's the 5th unit of knights which wins me the game. Horaayy for the Orcs!!!

I had lost 7 units total out of 25 (my break point was 13) but a few of them were single stands.

The giants did okay this game, but it was alot of points v's one of his cheapest units. I knew they'd easily beat any infantry units he could throw at me, and it was only his knights that could kill them. Unfortunately i couldn't charge his knights to really test them.

I didn't really explain the cards in this battle report because it's very difficult to go into much detail with warmaster. Warmaster has much going off in a game, there's lots of combat. We had various rerolls for Command checks, spells that were rerolled.

Our verdict is we both really enjoyed the addition of the cards, and will definately use them again. We weren't sure if the ability to cancel only 1 card in the game was enough (maybe 2 would be better??) We liked the dilemma of deciding whether to cancel this effect or save it for a more crucial part of the game.

We've also got the option of adding more cards to the decks, or discarding cards we thought were too powerful.

wow, first of all, lovely table!  second, I am very interested to see what happens with the two giants charging those men brigade.

Never play with bretonians, so here it goes a question that came when see the bretonnian breakpont:  Bretonians breakpoint only counts the knights. Your opponent have 5 kinghts, he should have a breakpoint of 3. Breakpoint is calculated as nº of units /2. Am I correct?

Thanks jchaos79. It's a table at GW nottingham, not painted by me.  It's a nice place to have a game, we often have a few cups of coffee from bugmans as we're gaming :)

Yes you are correct about only the knights counting towards break point. He has 9 units of knights (2 are grail knights)

Ok, thanks for the bretonian brekpoint clarify.

The battles is exciting, and the cards seems a great idea.  Greenskins bite the dust again, it is a really hard army to win with

Thank you Edmund, it's always great to have a comment. Let's me know someone is reading it  :)

I'm on a roll with my orcs. I lost my first three games of warmaster with them (that's partly to do with us not realising that victory points could mean a draw even if your army withdraws), but since then i've won about 10 on the trot with my orcs. Think i'm just lucky with them.
