I like the figures being "dark and greasy" - its exactly how I imagine them too!

I actually think the base colours are fine, its just that some bright green and/or some dead grass static grass and perhaps the very odd tuft of something in a green would brighten up the base without detracting from the figures. I'll leave it entirely up to you to play and experiment. Its not always wise to try and make decisions based on photos alone!

I'm not bothered about differentiating between units really. On a practical note, if I have to, I'll put blobs of different coloured paint on the undersides of the bases to deliniate units, I don't want to spoil the visual effect with colours/numbers etc visible on the figures or base edges.

Skaven differentiate clan mates in the tunnels through smell.
( Suppose I could spray figures with different scents, that'd be interesting! :)  ha! )

Thanks so much again for the compliments. All worth the effort with the brush.

If you smell them they smell like varnish... perhaps that's what the musk of fear smells like  ;)
I left some varnish on to give them a "greasy" look.

BTW Dave got the army book, read the fluff, totally pumped to continue to do this! Also reading Skavenslayer right now too! Will most certainly add some tufts of grass to the base to break up the darkness, just haven't gotten around to it yet!

These Skaven look so real. Thats just amazing! Great work. Makes me want to start a Skaven army too :) Must resist!!!

A tiny bit of (hopefully constructive) criticism: I am not sure I like the flock on the sides of the base. Imho the side should be black and used to "frame" the miniatures. Also, the flock might be a problem when forming brigades and might even chip away.

Great, love the reds on the Stormvermin commander.
Can't wait to see what you do with the characters!!!

If it were me, I'd patch flock the bases all together, at the end - it'll be quicker.

It'll also be an excuse for an awesome group shot!

Glad the book arrived. The background on the Skaven is part of what attracts me to them.

Dave, if you want to see a real Stormvermin commander look here at Snik Scarslick the White!

Blog Update!

I swear to you this guy looks 10x better in person. I'll re-photograph him tomorrow when he's on his base. Any thoughts on what you want him to based like? Just him, with some rats at his feet? He's albino in case you couldn't tell from the photo, like I said though, way better in person.

But... HOW DO YOU GET TO THIS LEVEL OF DETAIL IN 10 mm?, i can not barely believe it!!!

And you say that in person is 10 times better??!! Are you meaning that if i see the miniature probably i'd like to have sex with it?, hahaha, i'm kidding of course, but i really love your painting!!

HOW DO YOU GET TO THIS LEVEL OF DETAIL IN 10 mm?

Truthfully, if it's sculpted on than I feel obligated to paint it. If the sculptor made the effort to sculpt something I actually feel compelled to paint it. I actually physically feel ill if I don't stay true to the sculptor's intent. I simply can't ship something like that out the door, not at least with people paying for it. But that's just me.

Thank you again and again for the compliments. You all truly don't know how much you mean to me and my craft.

Wow, just Wow!
If you blew that figure photo up, he'd happily pass for a 28mm Skaven figure!

I sent the characters in a few little zip lock bags with UK 2 pence coins, in little, pre prepared groups.
If you could base them together, in those clusters, on the coins, that'd be great.

From memory, He was with the standard bearer figure, so you could base them together on one coin.
Like the troop stands, I like the character stands to be quite 'busy' with 2-3 figures on each stand, plus any rats or whatever scattered around. I can't see skaven heros being on their own, they will always have toadies, body guards or slaves present.

Snik Scarslick will be pleased - his crimson pack banner will gain him much warpstone fealty - yes yes.
